Great video once again gentlemen. I’ve had the privilege of keeping koi for over 25yrs and remember many, many years ago, there were a few people within the local BKKS section, that were trained and governed by the koi health forum of the BKKS and these people were trained and allowed to visit your pond and properly treat koi for a bacterial infection with antibiotics as instructed through the KHF. Unfortunately through the misuse of antibiotics, a lot of the antibiotics used in those days,( gentamicin, oxytetromiacin etc) became in affective against aeromonous and pseudomonas bacteria and the BKKS decided to do away with the KHF, due to the new legal legislation brought in by vets, which meant many of us were effectively hung out to dry when we encountered a bacterial issue as like you say the process can be lengthy and not a lot of vets know much about koi. At least when the KHF was around, with the local section koi health officer the process was much quicker and you were able to get hold of the necessary antibiotics and advice you needed. It’s a shame that system fell apart and if something like that was around today, I think it would be invaluable to koi keepers and maybe many more koi could be saved.

Great talk. We all agree and follow you there on multiple points. The thing is, we are trapped in this culture of 'suing', no one wants to take full responsibilities, so it's no surprising that dosage/solutions are very weak. We all know too that sometimes individuals can have much more knowledge than a vet itself, even an experienced vet. I am sure you two have got practices and ways of doing things that vets would totally disagree with. Knowledge/experience/old fashion trics versus controlled knowledge from a book or a uni bench. Buts it's the same in every hobby where livestock is involved. It's a tough one.

Fascinating topic guys. I’ve suffered from a bacterial issue the season and lost a few fish, 3 of them over 50cm. I’ve had conflicting advice from some dealers. I’m hoping I’m over it now. If you guys know which products work better because they are the correct strength, if you tell us or just put a packet for all to see in your brilliant videos, we can all stop buying the other crap, then those manufacturers will have to improve their products. Which would improve things all round. As for vets, which I did research online as none of my local vets are interested in fish. I worked out the mileage, call out fee, hourly rate and meds would have been more than my fish were worth and you don’t get rates for pensioners when talking to vets. Keep up the good work guys, stay safe and well 👍🏻

Great topic fellas. Yep, I got mugged off by a well known expert holding a senior position in a big club, he didn't have a clue, charged me loads then ignored my calls. Most current meds would not get approved for use today and I believe this restricts ability to amend instructions. There are wonder meds available on black market, one I used was nothing short of incredible, even know of a vet who uses it, fish and filters benign to it but parasites wiped out, and now I'll never use FMG again.

In Japan, oxolinic acid is the most common antibiotic and is readily available to everyone under the trade name Kanpara PARAZAN. It has been decades since I knew it and I have never heard of any reports of resistance problems. I'm sure there are many situations where it is used heavily, not only by breeders and hobbyists (and I'm sure KOIs who have experienced this are often imported), but I've heard that the UK is more strict about antibiotics, but what about over-the-counter medicines with oxolinic acid as the main ingredient?

Great video guys I think it will be Good practice to find a vet that does deal with koi before a problem occurs im in Manchester add A bacterial problem last year my Local vet doesn't deal with Koi but After ringing round several vets got one that Was willing to help I take one koi down to them to see then was given the Antibiotics to Inject myself so I think getting Your koi registered at a vet that would deal with fish just like we do with r pet dogs Before a problem starts

Talking as a veterinary surgeon who practiced for a fair number of years in the UK, there are a number of issues to consider. First and foremost I keep stressing that at university you are taught the square root of sod all about fish health in general let alone specifically about koi. I also keep repeating that there are no up to date comprehensive textbooks about the subject, if you browse in the veterinary section of big bookshops you can find books on the most niche of subjects even regarding fish (i.e. "Phylogenology, anatomy and physiology of ancient fishes), it is not that vets are not willing to pay for them, we are used to paying hundreds for good textbooks - the books are just not being written by the few people who really know their onions. Same applies for courses, in order to keep your MRCVS status you have to do so many hours a year of Continuing Professional Development, there are courses available about the most specialised aspects of veterinary medicine (and we pay hundreds if not thousands for them) but none about ornamental fish or specifically koi, even if one of our fish costs more than the avarage pooch/moggy - my Hoshikin kohaku cost me more than my pedigree golden retriever. On top of that the veterinary business has gone more and more corporate, with practices bought over by large groups -often belonging to venture capital, they are mainly profit driven as the bosses are no longer vets but bean counters. In my opinion the only way to improve the situation would be to encourage some form of cooperation between the big players in the koi world such as yourselves, big retailers, BKKS and equivalent veterinary bodies, be it the British Small Animals Veterinary Association or veterinary faculties. You could see if you could organize a CPD course held by Jos under the umbrella of the BSAVA -they would make sure it is all legit.

Great video chat guys, you are totally on the button with this, having been a dealer and a direct importer back in the 80's & 90's and into the very early 2000's we are certainly no further forward with this . I also think some of the off the shelf treatments available now are also weaker solutions than back then, due maybe to current legislation and licencing requirements today, with some that used to be available being "banned" from sale in the UK due to chemical make -up.

I think its all down to one of the first subjects you touched on...and don't get me wrong, they are not always the best answer...but lack of a controlling body. Can't all you major importers get your heads together and form some sort of umbrella pressure group to straighten things out. You said it yourselves the hobby will shrink if people get disillusioned with it. People can't afford to start again if their fish get wiped out through lack of help/good advice/correct treatment. Local vets aren't always the answer, I'd rather trust our dealer...one of your customers. 😀

Really good discussion fellas, can’t help thinking with medication exactly the same in the human world , why administer something that will cure the problem, when they can give you tablets for the rest of your life and make a fortune! Dr surgeries are urged to do this. Completely wrong, totally with you Ricky 👍

Excellent episode on a very annoying and sometimes depressing part of the hobby. I totally agree that research into new treatments is badly needed and way overdue. I have kept koi for over 20years and I dread to think how much money I have spent on treatments.

It maybe that chemicals are weaker because you have a potential of chemicals being discharged into water systems. How many koi keepers are dumping water onto their gardens or into the wrong drains?

Guys its great to listen to you talk but you leave us wondering when you mention products and dont give us the info . I understand there only so much you can say but dangle the worm a bit closer and give us an idea what to go for or the product your refering to, it would be nice . But in all fairness you could get these manufactures on a live and really make them realise that they are Ripping the average koi keeper off . Im sure they already know this but it wouldnt hurt to give it to them on a live so everyone can watch them lie. Thanks both for your time on these videos and we really appreciate what you do 👍👍👍👌

Have to say chris, i was a little disappointed with this video, as soon as i seen the title and the 1st question you put to ricky, i was bracing myself for his routine head exploding, with a few expletives and the occasional "F" bomb, (only the 1) and a few airings of his favourite catchphrase "boils my piss", but nope, nothing, despite all your good efforts. Is this the new calmer ricky i wonder, i much prefer the one who looks like hes going to do a reconstruction of turning into the hulk 🤣Another quality video again guys, keep up the good work.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for Government to approve a basic course which gives fish keepers a qualification in the basic procedures to follow to 1. Take a sample. 2. Get it analysed at a specialist. 3. What treatment to do and 4. Request antibiotics from a vet. 5. Inject your fish. Providing you can provide your approval number and test results/ calculations to the VET they would be covered, liability wise. They could have two levels of approval, one for personal use and one for business use. Business use would need liability insurance.
