my bakki works the same mate. foams in the top, media in next two. i did have to install an overflow pipe though as they do clog up

Nice update Si👍. Re the bakki shower media, I would start again with new media, just not worth the risk (in my opinion). Still think your new grow-on house is going to be epic😊👍

You need to have totally clear water going over your shower you know that mate. That shower media you have will be fine. You haven't even got to disinfect it. Just rinse it off and whack it back in 🤙 and the poop 'issue' is the food. It happened to me when I went from saki to a JDP and NT Labs mix. So I use all three together now and it's not so bad 🤙

It may well be fine, but ultimately I'm not sure I'd be able to rest with it back in the system, I think it would keep me awake at night😅. Interesting you say it's the food, others I know have no issues at all with it🤷‍♂️ I'm going to try them back on Saki again and see if the issue goes away, guess I'll know then if they just don't get on with it..

Hi mate, if you just wedge a piece of pipe in the corner the same height as the foams, it makes a simple overflow.

Put a tempest between the skimmer and the shower. Easier to clean than sponge

You could sterilise the media in the oven, bake it for an hour or so , just don’t tell you better half😂.As for the foam in the shower I would cut a hole in the foam and push a 2” pipe through for a overflow because when it blocks up, it will it will happen during the night or when you are at work , as for the food why not go back to Saki for a month and see the results?

i do it opposite, fine on top, medium in middle and course on bottom, then i have a layer of floss on top

@@UpNorthKoiPond gets rid of the fines early, means you clean the medium and course less, im not saying thats the way though buddy but works better for me, hardly have to clean the other two

If your water parameters are great and everything is running well, why add something else that could go wrong. Unless you are trying to get the fines out of the water. I have a shower similar to yours with a mixture of media in there and foams on the top. Just checked it and the media is really clean, obviously I have to clean the foams on the top tier. The foams did block and cause the water to pump out of the top though the end of the spray bar over night once. Fortunately I have auto top up, but god knows how much that’s cost to keep refilling. I’m going to fit a float switch in there now to shut it off when I get a minute. Your videos are really informative, thanks for making them. 👍

Hi buddy, thanks for watching. The purpose of the foams is purely to trap any small particles going in to the bottom two trays which I'm going to fill with media. Just to keep it clean more than anything to stop the media getting choked with crud👍 that was the idea anyway, and as you say foams are super easy to clean

Great update Si. After all the agro and heartache with the koi bacterial issue you suffered, I'd buy new media. I don't think you could ever get the old media completely sterilised and as you said you'd never be settled with it.

I would not use that media. Toss it out. The cost of new media is well worth your peace of mind. I remember what you went through before and how gut wrenching it was having that bacterial problem. I say toss it out!

Id bin the media personally. Not worth the risk after your issues last year. I had the same problems 2 years ago and just got everything fresh for piece of mind.
