Recently I & my wife both suffered from Covid-19 & both were admitted inDelhi cantt. hospital, separated from eachother in male & female wards.I used to listen this Gazel daily in my bed weeping for the separation of my wife till I was discharged on 6th Oct declaring me covid -ve but to my bad luck my wife passed away in hospital on 13 th Oct without having her last Darshan or attending his funeral.Iam in permanant grief since that day But this Gazel gives me strength to live on

Translation - Koi Umeed Bar Nahi Aati (Ghalib) koi umeed bar nahin aati koi soorat nazar nahin aati Line 1/2 - I do not see any hope in living. There is no solution in sight. Ghalib in his works has frequently touched upon this theme, that life is a continuous meaningless struggle that will end only with only when life itself ends. The second line could also mean I recall no face in my thoughts. He could be referring to his Love or God as he was disillusioned in both. maut ka ek din mu'ayyan hai neend kyun raat bhar nahi aati Line 3/4 - Death is definite one day. It has to come someday certainly to everyone. But why can't I sleep in the night. Why am I so restless when I know that the end will be same for all irrespective of wealth, luck or actions? aage aati thi haal-e-dil pe hasee aab kisi baat par nahi aati Line 5/6 - Earlier I was able to laugh at the dilemma of my heart. But now I am unable to laugh at anything. Ghalib is saying that the optimism and cheerfulness of youth has given way to the anguish and the despair of old age. jaanta hoon sawaab-e-taa'at-o-zahad par tabiyat idhar nahin aati Line 7/8 - Though I know the benefits and rewards of devotion and religious duty, but I am in no mood of it. It's not in my temperament these days. Ghalib taking aim at the religious clergy that constantly preaches of religious deeds/devotion so that they are rewarded of good life in the next life. hai kuch aisee hi baat jo chup hoon warna kya baat kar nahin aati? Line 9/10 - This is such a matter that it is better to be quiet. Otherwise there is no such thing which I can not speak of. Ghalib reckons that it is prudent for him to not talk of religious matters as he may offend people who may think what a non-practicing Muslim knows about religion. kyon na cheekhon ki yaad karate hain mere awaaz gar nahin aati Line 11/12 - Why shouldn't I yell with joy at those old glorious days. But my voice fails to produce a sound. The overbearing state of mine has devoid me of any respite that I could get by recalling old fond memories. daag-e-dil gar nazar nahin aata boo bhi aye chaaraagar! nahin aati Line 13/14 - Though nobody can see the wound of my heart, but the wound is festering and yet the healer does not come. Ghalib again questions the faith and says that he is a tortured soul searching for answers, yet the higher powers have not provided him any comfort. hum wahan hain jahaan se humko bhi kuch humari khabar nahin aati Line 15/16 - I am in such a situation right now, from where even I am unable to get any news of myself. The sadness, the sorrow has covered his self to an extent that he is not able to hear his inner self. He bemoans the hopelessness of the existence where the sorrow and grief have overtaken the sense of being. marte hain aarzoo mein marne ki maut aati hai par nahin aati Line 17/18 - I am dying of impatience in hope of death. Death arrives, but it does not. Ghalib depicts the human condition when faced with adversity or alienation that leads to a sense of despair. kaaba'a kis munh se jaaoge 'ghalib' sharm tumko magar nahin aati Line 19/20 -How will you go to Kaaba? O Ghalib! You do not have any shame left. How will you face the Mecca? Ghalib humbly accepts that he has not lived his life according to the faith. This is opposite to so many verses where he questions his faith and methods of the religion. In a way, he is probably mocking himself as to how he will go there and not necessarily regretting his ways. Meaning of difficult words:- sawaab = reward of good deeds in next life taa'at = devotion zahad = religious deeds or duties mu'ayyan = definite chaaraagar = healer

यह ना थी हमारी क़िस्मत के विसाल-ए-यार होता अगर और जीते रहते यही इंतजार होता ये मसायल-ए-तसब्बुब ये तेरा बयान गा़लिब तुझे हम बली समझते जो ना वादा खा़र होता कहते है जीते हैं उम्मीद पे लोग हमको जीने की भी उम्मीद नहीं कोई उम्मीद बर नहीं आती दिल-ए-नादां तुझे हुआ क्या है आखिर इस दर्द की दवा क्या है हमको उनसे वफ़ा की है उम्मीद जो नहीं जानते वफा़ क्या है कोई उम्मीद बर नहीं आती वक्त दुश्वार है हर काम का आसां होना आदमी को भी मुज्शर नहीं इंसा होना गिरजा चाहे है खराबी मेरे काशाने की दरो-दीवार से टपके है बयावा होना कोई उम्मीद बर नहीं आती है खबर गर्म उनके आने की आज ही घर में वो उनका आना हुआ घर हमारा जो ना रोते भी तो वीरां होता दहर जब दहर ना होता तो बयावा होता Koi ummid ber nahin aati कोई वीरानी सी वीरानी है दस्त को देखकर घर याद आया हम कहां के दाना थे ,किस हुनर में यकता थे बे सबब हुआ गालिब दुश्मन आसमां अपना कोई उम्मीद बर नहीं आती रंज से ऊवर हुआ इंसा तो मिट जाता है रंज मुश्किलें मुझ पर पड़ी इतनी के आंसा हो गई यूं ही गर्बो का रहा गा़लिब तो अहल-ए-जहाँ देखना इन बस्तियों को के तुम वीरां हो गई कोई उम्मीद बर नहीं आती जब तबक कोई उठ गई गा़लिब क्यों किसी का गिला करें कोई उम्मीद बर नहीं आती चिपक रहा है बदन पर लहू से पैरहन हमारी जेब को अब हाजते रफू क्या है जला है जिस्म जहां दिल भी जल गया होगा कुरेदते हो अब राख जुस्तजू क्या है रगों में दौड़ते फिरने के नहीं हम कायल जब आंख से ही ना टपका तो फिर लहू क्या है ना रही ताकते गुस्तार अगर हो भी तो फिर किस उम्मीद पे कहिए कि आरजू क्या है कोई उम्मीद बर नहीं आती कोई सूरत नज़र नहीं आती मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है दे दे हया तो बन्दे ग़म असल में दोनों एक है मौत से पहले आदमी ग़म से निजा़त पाए क्यों मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है कहूं किससे में क्या Shab- e-Gham Buri Bala Hai मुझे क्या बुरा था मरना अगर एक बार होता हुए मर के हम जो रुसवा हुए क्यों ना कर दरिया ना कहीं जनाजा उठता ना कहीं मजा़र होता मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है जान भी दी हुई उसी की थी हक़ तो ये है कि हक़ अदा ना हुआ मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है जिंदगी बेहतर याद आया दिल जिगर तिशनय फरयाद आया दम लिया थाना कयामत में हनोत फिर तेरा वक्त-ए-सबर याद आया है मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है जिंदगी में तो महफिल से उठा देते थे देखो अब मर गए पर कौन उठाता है मुझे मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है मोहब्बत में नहीं है फर्क जीने और मरने का उसी को देख कर जीते हैं जिसका फिर पे दम निकले लगाकर जोर सीन पर के तीरे पक्छ दम निकले वो जो निकले वो जो दिल निकले तो दम निकले मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है की मेरे क़त्ल के बाद उसने जफा़ से तोवा हाय उस दूध पसेमा का पसेमा होना मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है नींद क्यों रात भर नहीं आती आ गया तीक हाल-ए-दिल पे हसीं अब किसी बात पर नहीं आती जानता हूं शवाब का तो बहुत ईमा मुझे रोके हैं जो खींचे है मुझे कुफ्र काबा मेरे पीछे है कलीसा मेरे आगे जानता हूं शबाब का तो बहुत हमको मालूम है जन्नत की हकीकत लेकिन दिल के बहलाने को गालिब ये ख़्याल अच्छा है हद चाहिए सदा में अकूवत के वास्ते आखिर गुनहगार हूं काफिर नहीं हूं मैं खुदा के वास्ते पर्दा ना काबे से उठा जालिम कहीं ऐसा ना हो वहां भी बही काफिर सनम निकले कहां मेंखाने का जलवा था गालिब ओर कहा वाइज पर इतना जानते है कल वो जानता था कि हम निकले पर तबीयत इधर नहीं आती है कुछ ऐसी ही बात जो चुप हूं वरना क्या बात कर नहीं आती हम वहां हैं जहां से हमको भी कुछ हमारी खबर नहीं आती हम वहां हैं जहां से हमको भी फिर तेरी कूचे को जाता है ख़याल दिल-ए-गुमबस्ता मगर याद आया हम वहां हैं जहां से हमको भी बना के फकीरों का हम भेस गालिब तमाशा-ए-अहल-ए -करम देखते हैं हम वहां हैं जहां से हमको भी ए-सातना ने पूछा दिलदार देखना तुमको कहीं जो गा़लिब आशिक का सर मिले हम वहां है जहां हमको भी बक रहा हूं जुनू में क्या क्या कुछ कुछ ना समझे खुदा करे कोई हम वहां हैं जहां से हमको भी कुछ हमारी ख़बर नहीं आती मरते हैं आरजू़ में मरने की मौत आती है पर नहीं आती काबे किस मुंह से जाओगे गा़लिब शर्म तुमको मगर नहीं आती Koi Umeed bar nahi aati कोई सूरत नज़र नहीं आती
