For clarity, Showas start off black and gain colour. Sankes start off white and colour is immediate or almost immediate.

Indeed, when culling for showa only the black fry are kept. Unlike other varieties you can confidently use this to cull out none showa towards the end of the first week.

New subscriber and although I had a few koi in my pond for a few years bought as a present from a well known National company have now started taking up more interest and have just ordered some Japanese koi from a specialised dealer which are currently in quarantine. This video was brilliant for me as found it all confusing and posters just don’t do it. This was superb. Thanks and I shall be watching many more of your videos. One question re testing water, what is the best way of testing for chlorine (after the water has been through my three stage filter) is there any particular kit? Thanks

Came into koi when a small pond was left by the former tenant at an apartment i lived at. They survived my learning curve in pond maintenance and moved them into a large stock tank where they continue to grow .Had a Kohaku which lost all it's orange/ red and became a pearly white . What's the probable cause for this ?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, the new white koi you have is a shiro muji. Unfortunately this just happens sometimes. It is in the genetics and was destined to happen all along but there are certain water conditions or even stress etc that can trigger it at different times. It is a sign that the koi is what people deem 'low quality' in that the red is weak and unstable. The koi experts will have been able to pick up on signs that this would happen from a very young age

Really great video,I have about 60 fry at roughly 14 weeks old this video has helped identify a couple of varieties I wasn't sure of,I have several mainly scaleless kohacku except they have thr mirror carp type scales going down the middle along the lateral line, This also does this with the yamabuki and the orange goons but black has started to show up in them as well, I also have several light blue fish with lots of black overlaid with yellow on the head, Also dark blues with platinum fins,These fish probably don't fall into those categories but I'm enjoying the process of there development anyway, In terms of the knowledge you drop in your videos I think your channel is head and shoulders above most if not all, Thanks for the these great videos all the best

If you have a video on this can you share the link so I can watch this also. Thank You For Sharing Your Knowledge ☺️

Hi Sonja and thank you very much 🍻🍻 Koi are valued based on many different things. A young koi will have a value in its potential. So it may be expensive because it has the potential to be a very high quality fish when it grows. However, if you don't go on to realise that potential then that value is lost. Value comes from a koi having the body shape and signs that it will grow big, good skin quality, good colour and lustre, proportions, confirmation, good balance to the pattern, size at a given age etc etc etc , so many things. When it comes to graded koi, these tend to be lower quality fish such as from garden centres or low end koi outlets and to be very honest with you, they don't mean a lot. There is no standard, no rules for it. Its just down to the people selling them and their interpretation. They may use good quality parents and so grade the offspring as high grade but in effect this is no indication at all of the quality of an individual fish. When you are starting out I wouldn't place any emphasis on anything other than what you are comfortable to spend on a koi and picking something that you like. If the hobby grabs you and you become obsessed (like most do 😁) you will learn from these first koi and by the time you are ready to invest in better quality you will know what to look for 👍👍👍

@@DazzleKoi Thank you very much for one getting back to me and two for letting me know. I would love to show you my koi that I currently have. I'm really interested in doing the photo shows and have looked into buying a measuring tub. I currently have a Blagdon Half moon pond with Common Goldfish and a large pond in the front with my Koi I However, I have also now decided on getting a large standing pond built up similar to your one that you had In the back of your video, Digging is out the question as we have underground pipework as I sadly found out when trying to build the pond there two years ago. 🙈 Do you have any tips on how to maintain this type of pond? I'm curious you drain the pond and just stand in it as this is what I do with my large pond at the front. I will be using insulation and carpet to protect the pond liner and help keep the heat in for during the winter.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sonja, my pond does go down in to the ground as well. Its not really possible to go deep enough with it all out of the ground as it starts to look odd if you go higher than say 3ft and koi really need 4ft+ to be comfortable, particularly over winter. Have you looked in to re-routing the underground pipes? Its often not as difficult as you might think. In terms of maintenance, I have a bottom drain in which feeds to my filter by gravity so there is no maintenance. The pond is fibreglassed and the drain keeps the bottom spotless. The air helps to push any waste straight to the drain in the middle and out to the filter. I flush the filter out every night which involves turning a couple of valves and takes about 3 minutes. But it could be done once a week, its just that I like to get the waste out of my filter every day rather than leave it in there longer.

@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi Жыл бұрын
Hi there and thank you 👍👍 Butterfly, or longfins as they are also called, fall in to the same categories. They are basically koi that have been crossed with something else to give the long fins. So in theory you could have a long finned version of any koi variety although that's not the case yet.

@@DazzleKoi oh my. So they’re hybrids then. Been on this planet for quite awhile now (won’t say how many years), had koi for many of those years….never woulda clued into that one lol. Interesting. Thank you very much for the amazing info.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi Жыл бұрын
Your welcome, and thank you for your kind words. Yes I guess they are hybrids, I haven't really thought about it to much, they aren't really common in the UK. Are you in America?, they are more popular over there. Now I think about it though, I wonder what other traits they inherit from the process. They could be more/less hardy depending on what other fish are involved. I do know they don't tend to grow as big.
@bobsaget669
@bobsaget669 Жыл бұрын
@@DazzleKoi I’m in Canada, so fairly similar to the US. They are quite common/popular here. They’ve been around and popular for at least 30 years. I think they’re mostly bred in the states and shipped around but we definitely have domestic breeders. Although koi in general are a bit more hard to find here these days. They don’t get as big and are more slender, but they do seem to be a bit hardier. My short research on it just now suggests they are hardier, but I’m sure that depends on the quality in lines being bred. I’m sure not all the breeders have the highest of standards for them unfortunately. They’re stunning to look at though.

I am both a new viewer and subscriber to your channel and so far have enjoyed what I have seen. This was a very informative and well done video which provided a clear explanation of the various koi groupings with excellent examples of the koi varieties. Much better than many other koi variety videos out there. My koi collection consists of 11 koi, all imported from Japan a number of years ago, ranging in size from 69 cm for my gin rin chagoi to 48 cm for my gin rin matsukawabake, all of which are housed in my 20,000 ltr pond. My oldest koi will be 20 years old this year and was purchased when she was 2 years old. My favourite variety of koi is kumonryu however one I would love to obtain for my pond is a sumi goromo. My search continues as I have yet to find one for sale anywhere here in Canada and import restrictions introduced a few years back make importation difficult and expensive. Maybe one day I'll find the one I am looking for. Keep up the great work on your videos.

Hello there mate and welcome. Sounds like a great pond and some good size koi to 👍👍 I dint realise there where restrictions in Canada like that, it must be very frustrating. Sumi Goromo are not particularly common here, especially not a good quality one, so I can imagine how difficult it is to find one where you are. good luck with the search, it will be all the more special when you eventually find one 🍻🍻🍻

I caught a koi out of a public pond.. and until I googled the difference between a koi and a goldfish I had no idea.. so in my search to identify what kinda fish I brought home and threw in my tank I came across this video.. and tho I don't quite have the mystery breed figured out I do feel very much more informed on koi breeds! I do trust you know what your talking about and I will take a peak at your other videos! Thank you so much.. oh and if you wanted to help me identify my mystery fish I can describe her . Along with her were some of her sibling fish.. so the fish were mostly grey with splashes of color on them. Very flowy like fins.. some Orange some yellow.. the one I caught.. (which I might add, was very difficult to catch) was grey with the yellow markings.. I'm not sure if that's enough information for you to tell me what kinda fish I got .. but if it is I do look forward to your reply!

Hi , can I just ask is there a reason why you have your air on your bottom drain turned up quite fierce? Many thanks Paul
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, you honestly can't have to much air. Its vital for all aspects of koi and pond health and function. I have an EA 70 on my spindrifter bottom drain. I would never recommend throttling back an air pump as the back pressure just reduces the life of the pump. Air does so many things, it creates vital water movement and circulation, in the case of a bottom drain it pushes waste to the drain, it provides oxygen for koi, bacteria etc, it disrupts the surface so that predators can't see your koi so easily, it speeds up gassing off etc etc etc.

Cheers Jeremy. My top tip would be to try and keep it simple. Its easy to get overcomplicated and then all the fun is replaced by stress. It doesn't have to be complicated or expensive, especially at first. Thanks again 👍👍

Another very informative video Professor! Where does the Matsuba come? I have a Kin Matsuba, Gin Matsuba and AKA Matsuba. I was told that the definitive way to tell the difference between a Sanke and a Showa is to look inside the mouth. The Sanke is white and the Showa is black inside the mouth.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, Matsuba was one of the varieties on my list that didn't quite make it in to the video. I had to decide which to drop as there are so many and it wasn't easy. Matsuba translates as 'Pine cone' so the reticulation effect on the scales is said to resemble the needles on a pine cone. Matsubas are metallic and single coloured (not counting the dark colour in the reticulation). And come in 4 colours. Kin, Gin, Ki, and Aka (golden, white/silver, yellow and red) They also come in doitsu varities of the same 4 colours. They come under Kawarimono. Thats interesting, I've never heard that about the mouth before. I'll have to have a look at my sanke 👍👍
