I purchased his book "Ki in Daily Life" back in 2007, flipped through it loosely from cover to cover and learned a few things about breathing and where to focus it and, Ki energy. It's now 2015 and I'm reading it again like it was my first time but with the intent of really learning and chewing on his teachings. Thank you Sensei.

Ki aikido was the aikido style i learned and its amazing how you actually experience the ki aspect thru its many exercises. However, i would still not treat it as a street defense application... at least not until you reach Master Tohei's level of competence.. personally, i dun see many people reaching that level of competency... i moved on from that to many different art forms but continue to revisit from time to time due to the ki aspect and how i can integrate that into my other art forms.

I did Seidokan Aikido, which was founded by Roderick T. Kobayashi, a student of Tohei's. I used it to successfully defend myself several times. Including attacks from behind, and multiple opponents.

Koichi Tohei used aikido during WWII in Manchuria; same with Gozo Shioda. When Sensei Tohei came to the US to spread aikido he received a lot of challenges (mainly in Hawaii); some were friendly, some were not. I'm not defending aikido nor modern day aikidoka but Sensei Tohei was able to hold himself well in real life combat scenarios.

The reason why Tohei's brand of Aikido involves a lot big jumps and large dance like rhythm is because of his experience teaching in Hawaii. The students here were bigger than the average Japanese so you had to use bigger movements to compensate.

A lot of people think it's fake. That's allright, Tohei himself thought it was fake."I was just starting to think that if this was aikido I might as well forget it and go home. Just then Ueshiba Sensei returned. I produced my letter of introduction and he said “Ah yes, from Mr. Mori…” Then as a demonstration, he began tossing one of the larger uchideshi around the dojo. I thought it looked kind of fake until Ueshiba Sensei told me to take off my coat and come at him. I got into a judo stance and moved in to grab him. To my great surprise, he threw me so smoothly and swiftly that I couldn’t even figure out what had happened. I knew right then that this was what I wanted to do. I asked permission to enroll immediately and began going to the dojo every day from the following morning.

Ki - Aikido or Aiki is where your hard, technique based training and practice will ultimately take you. Strength technique-based Aikido has its limitation whereas Ki Aikido does not since it is the constantly changing energies of the participants that the "technique" arises from and not from a preconceived or predetermined response.

Well thanks for the clarification - but this is something that should be understood by any serious/experienced martial artist. If Ki was only a verbal attachment it would be only superficial, but when Ki is expressed "verbally" it helps manifest the energy and focus in the "Now". Most aikido practitioners are not the best attackers, applying proper Kia help raise that bar and adds to make you do better defense. It´s easy to meditate on the mountain top, but hard to find inner peace in chaos.

I had experience when still a child of trying to open a draw with force and it didn't open, but when I relaxed stopped trying it opened easily. Is this what you are saying, I think in our culture we are encouraged to try harder when we don't succeed, so we try harder and become tense and sometimes hold our breath instead of breathing, which appears to just make things worse. And I personally forget this and so mostly just continue trying to hard and forgetting to relax.. I tried Aikido many yrs ago but I ended up with a shoulder injury and problems with my wrists and some knee pains very shortly after trying it. I then stopped and have been told I'm suffering from underlying hypermobility problems. My wrists have never properly recovered and still get some shoulder problems despite having physiotherapy and doing the exercises and pilates. I think one problem is that the club I went to for some unknown reason decided not to do proper warm ups before the classes the instructor was genuine as i checked with the relevant governing body in the UK for martial arts before attending the lessons.

To be honest i did not see anything that was not related to the general understanding of basic Aikido Principles. It don´t know much about Koichi Tohei but he seamed like a master no doubt about that. but I never understood the need to ad "Ki" to the "Ai Ki Do" where the word and it´s meaning is already an integrated part. IMO I must say that both the hip work and the Ukemi attacks looked rather stiff plus no Kia was applied to put focus and power into the attacks. Anyway thanks for sharing.

For example, I practice ITF Taekwon-Do and I was practicing self defense with one of my classmates; defending against a stick attack over the top... for that defense I only redirected my opponent's motion away from my vital targets. To apply a successful Aikido technique, one will need the exact same initial blending (or physical empathy) as shown in both videos, essentially meaning not to go force against force - that is basic Aikido learning - difficult to learn and master never the less. Also Hanmi stance is a constant ingredient, especially visible in the linked video, keeping you center and balance is basic Aikido practice - in the moment one uses force in Aikido the technique is void - All Still basic Aikido to me.

Ki is called qi or chi by the Chinese. It has nothing to do with aikido of Kung fu. It can be used by anyone to produce power. The thing I don't like about aikido is the ridiculous outfit and all the bowing. Then there is the spiritual stuff. Very cool to be spiritual but to deny sparring and realistic fight training is a terrible idea. This guy advanced past a lot of the bull but why did he keep the skirts and bowing . All that does is make it much less real. You want to have a martial art as part of your life, not requiring you to change what you are wearing and get everyone to bow and sit on the floor. It should be part of every day life. Too bad this is in Japanese. I would like to extract the valuable info from the ton of crap. The biggest problem is that aikido never demos realistic attacks by multiple kicks and punches. It's all about wrist locking, which doesn't work against a repetitive kicking attacker who may be kicking to the knees and liver. In the demonstration there was not a single realistic attack. Who swings their arm towards someone to nicely give the guy time to do what he wants with zero resistance or recoil. Even beginners do not extend their arm slowly for someone to easily grab your wrist and do nothing like punch or kick. Aikido has great techniques but if you never practice realistic attacks, it's almost useless. Ok this guy has some cool stuff but he is the most advanced aikido guy of all time. He can do things that other high level guys can not do at all. But again, let's see him deal with a real attack by a person REALLY trying to hurt him, NOT playing the aikido dance.
