I was born in the 1980s (fortunately) . It was a decade of genius music and movies (Anime, HK, USA, JP). And it was a genius decade for JPOP in the 1980s (it was often called "THE GOLDEN ERA OF J-POP) with a maximum of lyric and singing-quality. Tsuyoshi Ujiki (Dry Your Tears, PURPLE EYES), Koji Tamaki (Wine red no kokoro, Jirettai, Sukisa, Friend), Mitsuyo Nemoto (Never, Somebody), Tsubokura Yuiko (Omoide ni dakarete, Rock Me, Matoitsuku omoi, Jet aime), all of them, this present World never has anymore.. KPOP has only "beautiful women" (plastic surgery and ton of make up) without song, lyric and singing-quality. Jpop of the present, never find his prime of the 80s anymore.. Hongkong-Pop (Andy Lau, Sally Yeh, Anita Mui, Chackie Cheung), even called C-POP, the only Pop in Asia, which was of lyric and singing-quality nearly of eye level with the superior JPOP of the 1980s until middle of the 1990s, passed away, since it handed over to Peking in 1997. Remember of the 80s and 90s, my heart is deeply hurt of melancholy..

To me the golden era is the 90's and early 00's. Im also born in 80's. But i only got to know jpop in 00. There's so many great songs in the 90's. Maybe it's just taste. But agree with you, from middle 2000's to now jpop has been declining in quality and favor other aspects like: dance, creativity, good looking physic etc.

I played this song for my Kindergarten pupils. One student closed his eyes and wept. It was soon after the pandemic broke out and we never got to see each other again. This song lives deep in my heart. I don't understand any words except "Friend" but the melody sure connects us all. Music, as William Shakespeare once said "is the fruit of life, play on". Music binds us in ways that nothing else does. Thank you to the Koji Tamki for singing from his heart. As Diana Ross stated in an interview on an Oprah Winfrey Show, you have to sing songs with meaning to enable your audience to feel your intended message. Thank you for your music.
