That's good info. I've been putting my line back 80-100ft then connecting to my downrigger. I feel like I'm not getting the true depth on my lure. I'm going to try what your doing 40-60ft back. I'm thinking that will hold my lure down to where I want it better. I'm also using a gas motor for trolling so I thought the farther back the better for the noise without thinking about the common sense part of it. lol

Can you explain on your down rigger do you do a set back and then down to the fish depth? Still learning. Jeff Great video by the way.
@Northwestfishingfanatics

@@jeffgarlock I go 20-40ft out before clipping in the clip. Then go about 10ft above whatever depth you're marking the fish.

Making a trip from the Northeast to fish with my Gig Harbor brother. We're heading to Banks/others in the Scablands for other species. Kokanee would be fun to try. He's got all the mechanicals. What's your setup from the flasher to the maggots? Brother has mentioned Hoochies but have never used them. Can you give some detail like size/brand/color of flasher/hooch/maggots? By the way, enjoy your no-nonsense approach!

Sorry for the late reply. I was Salmon fishing yesterday. Try any of the Paulsen Cascade Half Fast dodgers with a short 10"-12" leader of 10-12lb test mono leader. Use either mini or micro hoochie. I use both. Hoochies are like little squids. Use two single hooks with the trailing hook just past the end of the hoochie. That's for short strikes. You should be able to see one of my setups in this or another video. Any/all outdoor stores sell hoochies. The maggots are Pink ones from Gulp. Good luck. Hope this helps.

@@michaelmilton4427 They came with my big boat when I bought it. They're popular in the Midwest apparently. They work fine but they won't handle 15lb balls and they don't have an auto stop. The new ones have all those features though.

GREAT video! Quick question: for the rod you're fishing that's NOT in the down rigger, you're putting it back 60 feet from the boat, with a 2 ounce weight. At your approx 1.7 MPH trolling speed, how far down (deep) do you think that lure is with the 2 ounce weight? I troll for trout without down riggers, using 2 ounce weights also, and am curious how deep these 2 ounce weights take my lure? Thanks in advance for any info!
@Northwestfishingfanatics

I guess about 40ft. There are charts for this but I never use them 😆.

@@Northwestfishingfanatics Thank you! I've just discovered your KZbin channel and am loving your videos. You do a lot of the same type of fishing I do. I'm on Vancouver Island and fish rivers for trout and chum, coho, chinook, and pink salmon. But I'm REALLY getting into trolling Vancouver Island lakes for trout and Kokanee. I'm having great success on local lakes surface trolling lures, and flies. But I know there are times I'll need to get deeper, so this is VERY helpful.

I agree with you about setbacks, I like the 40’ range on downriggers at any depth below 20ft. However I don’t like the speed you troll at, too fast for us. In your lake it works but here in California and Trophy lakes in the west, the usual speed is 1.2-1.5mph. Also wonder why you loosen drag when the fish takes drag, that makes it easier for the fish to fight longer.

Going to merwin this weekend, any tips for summer time kookane? Also if we are wanting to fish 30 to 50ft deep without down riggers how much line and weight? Thank you
@Northwestfishingfanatics
@Northwestfishingfanatics Жыл бұрын
Look for cooler water depths in these wsrmer days. Early morning may produce more shallow. I'd start with basic flasher and hoochie combos and switch up until you find a productive color combo and depth. I'd start with 2-3 oz weight on a dropper rig at 30-40ft then go more weight and more distance hoping for the sweet spot. Good luck.

Two options. One is a slider/dropper rig. I think I show one in my American lake video. It's just a heavier mono rig 100lb test or so anout 2 to 3ft long with a sliding drop swivel in the upper portion to attach a 2-6oz cannon ball with barrel swivels on each end. Easy to make. The other is just a simple light weight clip/release with a duo snap to attach a cannon ball. Clip it to your line ans simply remove upon retrieve when you're fighting the fish.
