At one point I was looking at leaving Hawaii, maybe permanently. As I drove to the airport, for maybe the last time, this came on the radio. I admit I cried. The song is so full of love and aloha, to me it’s an anthem for the islands. I am back, thank goodness :)

John Cruz won a Grammy for Slack Key in 2005, for His original song "Jo Bo's Night" (which was featured on the compilation CD Slack Key Guitar Volume 2) which was also the first Grammy ever awarded for Hawaiian music. He is a true master. Although I think he may argue that there are others that have laid the ground work for slack key before him...humble this guy. the sign of a truly great person, as well as a great talent.

Seeing Jack Johnson & John Cruz play this song when Jack opened for the Eagles last weekend was awesome. Jack put on a great kanikapila - even the three sheets to the wind dude nearby screaming for Jack to "get the f* off the stage" and "I came to see the Eagles" couldn't lessen the experience and my enjoyment!

Poi is a traditional Hawaiian food made from kalo root. If you let it sit for a day (or more) it will start to turn sour as it slightly ferments. Some folks like it fresh & sweet, some like it sour. For a lot of Hawaii-born babies (even local haole ones), poi is their first solid food - it's an easily digestible food and has a fairly low risk of allergic reactions. But it's a staple, not just a baby food - every time I make laulau or kalua pig, gotta have poi or no can enjoy!
