Thanks Malcolm. Great video. Very good mixture of the plane pics and video (interior and exterior), scenery and sights from the flight, narrative of stops and MAPS (the flight plan of your journey brought it altogether and makes the distance hit home). I think long distance flights of smaller aircraft is fascinating, and your video did an excellent job of showcasing that in a concise manner.

Cant help but think a faring over the front of the engine would reduce drag significantly, I understand its air cooled, but with 2 naca ducts either side wouldn't be difficult to make up a fiberglass shroud, considering its experimental you can do as you please.. Thanks for these two great videos of your trip to Florida in the Kolb Slingshot. What is the brand of that comm unit and where can ya pick them up? Also, how many gph did you find the Slingshot used and what kind of speeds during flight? Finally, have you had many people ride in the jump seat and if so, what's the size limitation both CG and space? Thanks in advance for considering these questions and should you decide to answer them.
@123mmorrison5 жыл бұрын
I bought the Dittel FSG71M radio either on ebay or Barnstormers, can't remember. I really like the radio. On this trip I cruised at about 75 MPH and burned 4.0 GPH. Top speed on the Slingshot is 85-90 MPH. I have never flown with a passenger. The jump seat is pretty tight and a little difficult to get in an out of. I used the space for my luggage and an extra 10 gallon fuel tank on the trip.
@drdimento5 жыл бұрын
@@123mmorrisonthat's awesome. I'll check the radio out and love that cruise speed. I think I'd consider me some cross country flying with that baby. What about flaps? is there a flaps option to lower the landing speed or another similar Kolb unit that has flaps and/or two seater? I'm new to this ultralight airplanes and LSA's and want to find something to fly around the patch and also go somewhere within a few hundred miles.

Hi enjoyed your video, how were you able to fly that route without adsb? Also was wondering would you have been able to fly an ultralight on that route would it be legal? Thank you for info
@123mmorrison2 ай бұрын
I did not fly into any A, B, or C airspace so no ADSB required. I believe an ultralight could fly the route legally, but it would probably require more fuel stops due to limited range with 5 gallons of fuel.

when you make a flight like this, do you have to file flight plans with the FAA and all that?
@123mmorrison3 жыл бұрын
I don't file any flight plans. It would be a good idea, but I prefer to keep everything as simple as I can. I sometimes use a SPOT GPS tracker so others can track my progress and I always have my cell phone along but coverage can be spotty should you go down in some areas.

Kolb doesn't make this model any more. Of the models they do make now (late 2020), which is most similar? Would you recommend it as a good recreational plane? Sightseeing, hundred dollar hamburgers, etc.? How does it do at high density altitudes?

The Firestar would be the closest to the Slingshot. Great fun, economical, and easy to fly. Short takeoff should be fine at higher altitudes.

@@123mmorrison Which do you prefer, the Kolb or the Tornado?
