Yep I liked the Level 42 of 1984. True Colours, the Hot Water mastermix and the tour that produced the live album A Physical Presence (I got to see them during it at Newcastle City Hall)....plus Mark's solo album Influences. For the fan it was great....for the band, record company pressure, sales and ambitions not quite reaching fruition. I often say it....the punter gets the better deal, just enjoying the music,

Pure genius. Sound, mix and gear is perfect. I do like some of the later songs too but without a doubt this era was just out of this world. Line up never been bettered either. So...I agree totally.

YOU LUCK OUT !!!!!!!!! We were going to see them in 1986 at The Palace in Hollywood but there was an earthquake & my sister didn't want to risk an aftershock in that old building so we forfeited our tickets. We figured we'd catch them on their next tour but they never returned to CA in the 80s. I did get to see them at The Grove in 2010 but man alive I wish I could have seen the original lineup in their heyday .... I would have gone anyway but my sister insisted we don't.... there never was an aftershock either! 😡

@@OneHope4Heaven That old Chesnut eh Sunshine? Sister not wanting to risk an Aftershock?, Well no one is falsing them down Her neck! She could of had a Hooch or even stayed off the alcohol pops altogether and You could of enjoyed a wonderful gig from Britain's ( and indeed The Earth's ) Finest. 👍😄

Thank you, Kolbola, for posting. This is superb. Decent sound too. I agree, GTAmediaproductions, the gould brothers were so good,the heart and soul of the band. Though it has to be said that Gary Husband and the other sidemen on Retroglide 06 did some amazing versions of 'Love Games', and 'Chinese Way'. Well said, though.

I saw Level 42 play at the end of October. The modern lineup is fantastic; they work extremely well together. Mike still uses the same electric piano that he has in this video! They performed this track live, and it was fantastic. They also did an album-perfect version of Turn It On, which was really surprising. They also played The Machine Stops which, until this tour, hadn't been performed live since about 1984. They are a fantastic band, if a little less energetic than in this vid!!

The "hand slap" style of playing bass here by Mark King is superb . It really is both musical and adds percussion . Mark and others attribute american bassist Larry Graham for inventing the technique . When Sly and the Family Stone first started forming they had no drummer . The group's bassist Graham created the style to give some percussion and beat to the band

There is an old theory when it comes to bass playing and drumming. If the bass line is simple, the drummer can play more, when the bass line is more complicated, the drummer plays more simplistic. It is a good rule of thumb to go by.
@davidsanderson5918
@davidsanderson5918 3 жыл бұрын
I came back here again after watching a performance of the same song from 2009, wondering why the later one wasn't hitting the spot (apart from it not being the classic lineup, for one thing).....and now I'd sum it up why THIS one DOES. It's because it's FAT!!! Mark's bass sound, the kick drum/the snare, Mike's Rhodes, Boon's guitar.....the compression on the sound even. It's tight AND FAT. That's the funk fusion I like anyway. Sorry present lineup, you can't touch this!! The whole DVD is VERY worth it btw.
@kolbola
@kolbola 3 жыл бұрын
Because the latest sound mixing (app. since 2006-2008 to nowadays) is overcompressed, the bass sound seems to came only from the line, not from the line&microphoned amp speaker, the bass EQ settings is too treble focused, too perfect, the drum is sparkly and the ambient is missing. Since around 2006, every live recording from Level 42 is too perfect, empty and sterile.
