Kolkata Durga Puja 2024: Irish Artists Create Confluence Of Two Cultures In This Kolkata Pandal

Kolkata Durga Puja 2024: Freelance artist Lisa Sweeney and Creative Director Richard Babington from Galway, Ireland, are busy at Behala Nutan Dal Puja pandal of Kolkata to create a structure of the Irish goddess Danu. In Irish mythology, Danu holds a place that is similar to Durga. The project is a collaborative work between the embassies of India and Ireland to commemorate the 75th year of successful diplomatic ties between the two countries. The two artists are working under the chief artist of the pandal, Sanjeev Saha.

@@gouravcullen6779 In the Rig Veda, our oldest literature we have a mention of a primordial river goddess Danu and the progenitor of Danav, a race of asura clan as they are descendants of Danu, Danav are told to be the enemies of Devas. It is mentioned Rig Veda she is also the mother of Vritra, a sea serpent who encircled the ocean of the world and cut-off the water of the Earth whom the Lord Indra fought to free the water of the world, followed by the expulsion of the Danavas. Now let’s take a look at the map of Eastern Europe that are named a whole bunch of rivers, Dnieper the one which passes through Kiev in Ukraine, others are Dawn, Danube River in Europe hungary, Dnister, Siverskyi Donets River etc and the linguistic origin of all these rivers is the word Danu, which also directs these river names that traces the Westward migration of a bunch of people who worshiped the Rig Vedic goddess or mother Danu. The word for water in the Saka mentioned in our Indian sources also called Scythians was Danu. Ancient Persians also share the same. If we look at the Island of Ireland, the first people of Ireland called The Tuatha Dé Danann meaning the folks of the goddess Danu who was a river goddess. Gourav Cullen doesn't sound like Indian name more like British's slave name.

Danu (Sanskrit: दनु, IAST: Danu) is a Hindu primordial goddess. She is mentioned in the Rigveda to be the mother of the eponymous race known as the danavas. The word Danu described the primeval waters that this deity perhaps embodied. In later Hinduism, she is described as the daughter of the Prajapati Daksha and his spouse Panchajani, and the consort of the sage Kashyapa. She was the mother of all 100 Danavas. They were neither evil nor good. Mayasura (architect) is one of the Danavas. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.

This is what actually happened, the local deities got gradually accepted, as the Vedic civilization moved into various regions. That's why you'll have localised version of deities across India. For example Lord Kartik becomes Lord Murugan in South. If Hinduism could have expanded into Arabia then the Arab pantheon would also have been absorbed into the fold.

Do not use the phrases "Irish mythology" or "Indian mythology". All these celebrations are an acknowledgment of natural reality, that of E = M (lila/interplay between energy and matter). The divine expressing itself in myriad forms. In this particular instance, it is the worship of the divine feminine. Don't preach Hinduism- you do what you like- don't comment on what you don't know or haven't experienced. If you have visited Kolkata during Puja and visited these- you would have known how religiously yet artistically things are done here. Why this, why that- cause every other Indian theme is already done by 1000s of committees over three decades, and there is no Indian theme left- think of Kedarnath, Somnath, puri, etc- all done. So, people now do global theme- it's a competition here to attract most crowd, win prizes. Burj khalifa, disney land etc kind of theme was done previous years- did people gave up Hinduism, did Hinduism got corrupted? It's an audacious challenge to replicate this theme- to show people who won't be able to go to Dubai or Disney.

EDIT: In case anyone tries to idiotically justify Durga or Kali as being part of Atharva veda, then let me remind you that Kali is used as an adjective to describe the flames of a fire which swallows everything it is given. There were animal sacrifices to both Vishnu and Rudra (who are the Vedic counterparts of modern day Vishnu and Shiva). Would you classify them as being the origin of Vishnu? All scholars who have studied Vaishnavism, will put the beginning of Vaishnavism and Vishnu as the deity you know now with the formation of the Bhagavat religion and the worship of the Pancahvira of the Vrishni clan. I warn you, I have studied East Asian cultures my whole life. Think again before challenging me.

Any person with any logic will say that there was a root for the mother goddess back in the Harappan civilization and that's absolutely fine. But saying that that is Durga is idiotic. All cultures have had mother goddesses and there is no surprise in that because guess what, mothers are important. It is absolutely idiotic to claim that the "Pashupati seal" of Harappan civilization is actually Shiva. Let me give you another example. Most historians will disagree that Narayan is a Vedic deity. The reason being that Vishnu in the Rig Vedas has vastly different origin myth (He is an Aditya) and modes of worship. There were animal sacrifices to both Vishnu and Rudra (who are the Vedic counterparts of modern day Vishnu and Shiva). Would you classify them as being the origin of Vishnu? All scholars who have studied Vaishnavism, will put the beginning of Vaishnavism and Vishnu as the deity you know now with the formation of the Bhagavat religion and the worship of the Pancahvira of the Vrishni clan. I warn you, I have studied East Asian cultures my whole life. Think again before challenging me.
