The five-day mega-festival in Kolkata is now placed on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. However, Durga Pujo is not just about festivals and pandal hopping.
The five-day celebration consists of various rituals, offerings, and worship, which hold immense importance among the devotees.
Mahalaya- Invoking the Goddess
Devi Paksha begins from Mahalaya, which marks the beginning of the Durga puja season. On this auspicious day, Kumartuli Durga idol makers draw the eyes of the Goddess hence invoking her.
The All India Radio broadcasts Mahishasuramardini (Goddess who killed Mahishasura) recited by Late Birendra Krishna Bhadra in the early morning on this day.
The show was first broadcast in 1931 and has remained widely popular to date. For many Bengali families, it is a tradition to listen to the program to get into the feel of the Puja season.
Shashthi- Welcoming the Goddess
Shashthi, the sixth day of Navratri, marks the beginning of the Durga Puja festival. On this day, the face of the Goddess and her children is unveiled, followed by several rituals like Kalprarambha, Bodhon, Amantran, etc.
Maha Saptami
Saptami begins with worshipping Kola Bou (a banana tree purified with sacred waters and then draped in Saree) and placing “her” beside Lord Ganesha.
The worshipping of Kola Bou involves the sacred bath of nine leaves or Nabapatrika. The nine leaves representing nine forms of Shakti are as follows.
Maha Ashtami
It is considered the most auspicious day of Durga Pujo. Many old pujas, like Belur Math, follow the Durga Puja tradition of worshipping young unmarried girls on Ashtami (Kumari Puja). The girls are worshipped as avatars of Goddess Durga.
Maha Navami
Navami marks the day when Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura. The act of killing Mahishasura is depicted in the Durga idol of every Bengali Durga Pujas. Navami is also considered an auspicious time for new beginnings.
Vijayadashami- Farewell to the Goddess
The five-day Durga Puja in Kolkata ends with joyous Vijayadashmi celebrations.
The highlight of the day is the enchanting Sindoor Khela.
Women dressed in traditional white saree with red border bid farewell to the Goddess by applying Sindoor on the forehead and feet of the Goddess, followed by applying sindoor to each other's foreheads, faces, and Shakha-Pola-Noa (bangles made of conch shells, coral, and iron- the traditional symbols of Bengali married woman).
People flock to Kolkata during Durga Puja to witness the grand pandals, larger-than-life idols, and boisterous festive mood. It is also the time to taste various local delicacies. However, the elaborate puja rituals are the core of this festival, symbolizing tradition and a connection to the past

Being a Bengalee residing out of India for almost 8 years, missing Durga Puja since 2014 (except 2017). This is the only time when I believe we all Bengalees crave for going back to Kolkata for once at least one day spent in Kolkata or Bengal to take the taste of this carnival a bit. You have magically depicted the festival through your lens and narrative, I loved it personally. I hope many myths will be countered through your video which is always there in north Indian people's mind regarding West Bengal and Durga Puja. Most common myth is why are bengalis non veg during these days while it is pure veg in North india..... Actually for us, it is daughter Parvati coming to her paternal house from Kailash, so she should be given all the good food, sumptous food possible, so it is a celebration time for her family members also at home on earth. Khichri bhog and pushpanjali, Sandhi puja and sindur khela were not covered and significance not explained .... Sandhi puja marks juncture of astami and navami....the lighting up of 108 lamps, remembering Ram who was falling short of one lotus to offer to Durga to get the bramhastra and was about to offer his one eye instead of that when parvati stopped him and gave him the brahmastra....strange thing is that this yagya was performed by Ravana himself being a brahman and Rama couldn't do it bcoz he was a kshatriya..... Sindur khela ke douran bhi durga aur unki do betiyo ko sindur lagaya jata hai, paan aur mithai khilaya jata hai....older ladies apne anchal se durga ki ansuo ko pochhti hai.....aur dhirey se kehti hai......agley saal fir aiyo beta....... uske baad har kalash se lal dhagey ko kat diya jata hai... Which marks the end of life in the idols...... It's a treat to watch the emotions attached when senior ladies cry and wipe the eyes of the idol....like bidding adieu their daughter to son in laws house jaise Menaka ne parvati ko kiya hoga .....chuki raja daksh aur jamai shiv ki apas me banti nahi thi isiliye shiv wife ke saath nahi atey sasural.... Par unki upasthiti rehti hai pichhe har pandal me..... Navapatrika shows the consideration of vegetation as well a very much part of this living world. Feed her with paan and sweet before she leaves for her husbands home is a very emotional moment although the dance during visarjan is just to cover up the sadness which engulfs everyone.....
