A lot of My Chinese relatives have sons or daughters that are studying abroad there and I was surprised how much of my family travel to Japan frequently. When I read the comments here, I believe that most of the characters are too inaccurate. I believe that Himayura also based their personalities on the behaviour of the government and not only on the stereotypes of their people. Italy is portayed as a coward, since the Italian military often escaped from battles and fights during WWII. Netherlands likes money, because the Dutch people have to pay taxes for every reason . In my opinion, Ukraine is portayed as a whining crybaby, since the country was always a victim of foreign circustances (especially Russia ). However, if it's true, some characters are still inaccurate.

And about Poland and Lithuania there countries who actually bonded together as countries In 1200s.

The reason behind the inaccuracies in characters is because an exaggerated character trait (based solely on an event in history or something) would get kept all throughout the series. For example like, North Italy being a coward and stuff. Another confusing thing is that the characters are made up of a mixture of "what the average person living there is like," and "what the country would be like if it were a human;" and it's done inconsistently. If you look at Belarus for example, you can see that she is basically an exaggerated version of what the country basically is. But on the other hand, characters like Spain just seems to be like the author's image of an average Spanish person. Though it's a little understandable since it's not possible to know what the residents of every country is like.

Despite all the stereotypes, Chinese citizens don’t actually hate japan that much 😂😂😂. I know there’s a lot of people on both sides of the spectrum, but speaking from a general standpoint after living in China for 4 years, most of the younger generation doesn’t really care as much. The older generations who have had family members directly affected are a lot more sensitive, but it seems a lot of the younger generations are lightening up. I personally got the feeling that they felt pressured by their society and historical education to hate japan, and while as some people would say it, they never really meant it. Heck, Japanese pop culture is everywhere in China, we had Japanese students visit our school in China and they were treated great, not even a single bad word said behind their backs amongst us students, they were escorted everywhere by our Japanese class (I went to a rather prestigious foreign language schools, that focuses a lot on language and sending its students abroad, and Japanese was a language you could choose to learn). Of course, this doesn’t stand for everyone, I know a lot of Chinese citizens still harbor harsh feelings toward japan but overall it’s toned down a lot. Another thing I wanted to talk about: perhaps the author made China like japan on purpose? He made China and japans relationship very “brother like” if you could call it that, with China being very forgiving and japan liking China very much. I personally think it’s guilty pleasure. Hetalia is very popular in China and I’ve never really seen a single fan there complain about that relationship portrayal, in fact, they find it cute. From what I’ve seen, the Japanese fans seem to like it as well. This sorta just added on to my earlier suspicion that maybe Chinese and Japanese citizens kinda just want to make up and let bygones be bygones at this point but feel like they can’t say it directly due to their countries political stances. After all, the series was written by a Japanese person who kinda applied stereotypes to the characters that he liked and what he thought other Japanese people would like.... still don’t like how China is portrayed as ignorant and weak in some cases though, like, that is as far off from China as you can get at this point

One has to keep in mind that these stereotypes are based off a Japanese perspective. Italy being 'weak' makes sense in the Japanese perspective due to the Italians losing WW2 on the axis side, thus giving the view of useless Italy to the Japanese public. Also, you mentioned Japanese people denying their WW2 crimes concerning China, its possible that Japanese people think that Chinese people like them, hence the friendly relationship between China and Japan. Its kinda like England and Ireland, Ireland absolutely hate the English while the English don't really undertand why we hate them. Anyways, this was just a bunch of ramble. As a Finn, I think that Hima took Finland as a great character even though he misinterpreted the country a little bit! At least in a historical sense, Finland had usually been tugged around by Sweden and Russia until after WWI, making a lot of people perceive the place as generally weak and easy going I guess We are pretty easy going, but if you know anything about the winter war, a Finn isn't weak, so yeah during WWII and all, the Finnish kicked ass and that surprised the heck out of a lot of people, I remember reading in the text books when I was younger about how a Finnish soldier would be worth 8 Russian soldiers! The Finnish would run up to these Russian tanks with logs, and jam their wheels so they couldn't move! They'd have great battle strategies and some pretty funny ones including raiding the Russian camps of their food (I guess another funny but unrelated fact is that during the peace treaty signings, the Russian diplomats and officials in Moscow would ignore the Finnish diplomats during lunch and such! It's kind of funny at least in my eyes about how much related to school drama that is ) I can understand how we would be misinterpreted pretty easily with the Christmas and Moomin stuff as well, and I can agree with you that Finland probably should have been more of a quiet character since there's not one Finnish person (besides myself usually) that I see as a decently sociable person, but overall I still adore Aph Finland's character, especially after Hima gave him some darker lines

OMG GIRL WE SHOULD HANG UP! I HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD POLAND! WHY IS HE LIKE THAT!? it's just, the series isn't supposed to use stereotypes? What the hell the character has to do with stereotypes about Polish people!? And I mean I love the character, Is funny and that, but, wth? I'm surprised that Poland hasn't provided this anime considering how conservatives they are. Now, Korea (well South Korea), In defense of Hima, a lot of his interactions with Japan and China are before the Imperialism thing, so, I do find that friendly interactions "acurrate , but only if they were before of all of that bad things. And besides that, i do think that his personality it is acurrate to the stereotypes of the country. And as well, some of the Japan and China interactions are before the Japanese occupation, specifically the most "suave ones", and that's why China acts so "cute" with Japan. Also, although Chinese Citizens and the Chinese Government still resent Japan, China was one of the first ones to "forget" what happen, specifically it was convenient for the government of that time to have good relationships with Japan, so they kinda like let the Japanese government get away with what happen (something that Chinese citizens didn't like at all, obviously). So maybe that's one of the reasons why the character doesn't hate Japan that much? And, about that China looks young, I don't think it's inaccurate, Chinese people and Asian people in general had atache this stereotype of looking way younger than their real age, so, the fact that he looks like a teenager (in my opinion he looks in his 20's) kinda fits him. It's precisely part of the irony. About Ukraine! There is theories that maybe the fact that she loves Russia, it's there to reflect the brainwash that the USSR did to every country that was conquered by them. This is reinforce by the character song "Sticks and Carrots", that reference punishment (sticks) and prices (carrot), which is a form of training and brainwashing, and that's why Ukraine, and maybe even Belarus, love Russia so much? But again that's just theories. And yeah, it's pretty much insulting, Ukraine has gone through A LOT of shit. And about Latvia, sometimes Hima decides to use the stereotypes about female citizens in males characters? Maybe that's part of why Latvia it's like that? But it's not like I know anything about Latvia "female stereotypes" so idk. Beside this, yeah pretty good video xD I could feel the frustration lol

Canada would be invisible because it’s normally not really recognized a lot, you can actually search up “Canada, ww2” and one of the first things that would show up would be “was Canada in ww2?” And etc. Meanwhile, Poland would act like a valley girl because that’s just how they seem, or they would be really sweet and innocent. As an Italian and a huge history nerd I need to say that the portrayal of Italy is so inaccurate and simplistic that HURTS! (and the only reason I don't feel seriously offended is because Hetalia is supposed to be comedy). I think that Himaruya needed a generic comic relief kind of character as a base to start off the manga and just decided to go with Italy. Also, it seems to me that he decided to consider Italian history only from 1914 onward, thus totally disregarding the 1500 years prior to that date ( and let's say that what he did consider are, for the most part, not actual facts but Anglo-American war propaganda induced stereotypes). So, yes, as much as I love Hetalia I really don't like the Italian brothers and Feliciano in particular: he definitely is NOT a good representation of the country, even if we're talking comedy.

Start - This is an anime originally created in Japan and follows the same rewriting of history as Japan did to not only other countries but lost a lot of its own history in the process. Doesn't mean its 100% wrong just a lot can be taken with a grain of salt.

Drunk deathmetal loving santa sounds amazing. Also, it really bothers me that none of the characters have beards, especially in the historical strips. Germania would DEFINITELY be bearded. Maybe they're just hard to draw?

10: There's hardly anything on India, not counting the times when he was under England. Him being nice to England may not be as inaccurate as you may think, being this takes place in the early 19th century. At the point England was sick, India and Britain had very good relations due to the Industrial Revolution going on at the time. India was booming from Britain, so they had no reason to hate the country. It wasn't until the Indian Mutiny of 1857 that things went sour from there. Hetalia doesn't just go into relationships of modern days, but also during the time it took place. For instance, when America was a colony under England, their relationship was the strongest, thus why America loved England so much, got along with him so well and didn't mind being bossed around so much. After the Revolution, their relationship turned sour, mostly America and Canada, thus why it's accurate that Canada was forcing America out his door. This is relating to Americans illegally trespassing into Canada and the stress it caused on the Canadians and the British Empire. It was so bad that they literally almost had a war over a pig. While I can't say India's the most accurate depiction, if we were to base it off of his relationship with England, it's not the strongest argument. India's relationship with England at the time was positive and this took place before the War of 1812. Their relationship wouldn't start going downhill until 1857. 9: I kinda agree, though being that we don't know a lot about Moldova and there are theories still up in the air, there's still the benefit of the doubt. There are too many questions about this character. My theory is that Moldova didn't exist until somewhere during the USSR, while Belarus existed longer technically. 8: Meh. I can forgive this, but only because China's treatment over Japan isn't always friendly. At times, China calls Japan "stupid Japan" and there's plenty of negativity and areas that China cannot stand about Japan. Him being nice to Japan can be somewhat accurate, because even though the government of China and Japan still have rocky relations, the people don't really care, at least the modern generation. They didn't live during the wars and often use the rivalry as mockery like the US and Russia are doing these days. Keep in mind that relations between time can heal through time. When a new generation is born that didn't live through wars, they will often be the ones that create the healing process between two nations. That is what is going on between Japan and China currently. Himaruya wasn't born during the wars, so how he depicts China is probably how many of his generation depicts the Chinese. That being said, as I stated before, it doesn't mean China is never mean and rude to Japan intentionally at times. Non of the countries are always mean and rude to each other. They had a positive or negative relationship at one point, then healed at some point in the future. America and England are great examples. Now, Japan and South Korea on the other hand... 7: Yeah, I agree with this. Sweden is especially inaccurate, but I get the feeling you're getting to that. 6: Makes no sense, I agree. I don't think they should age Latvia, but at least make him taller and a talk back kind of guy. 5: Lolz even the crossdressing makes no sense. I agree, it would've made more sense for Poland and Hungary to both be female. 4: The Korean War is still too soon, so I agree with this. While racism is a problem with Japan, China and South Koreans, it's worse in South Korea and they ingrain it into the younger kids of the next generation. There still needs to be more time before that whole hoopla can heal. Then, there's the comic when South Korea felt intimidated by America, who didn't recognize him **head bangs on table** South Korea's relationship with China and Japan should be with America. South Korea actually steals more from America, because it's farther away and can get away with it. Japan does complain about the copyright issues with South Korea, but only because of the tensions. South Korea steals ideas and shit from America more, because Koreans look up to Americans as their idols. 3: Yes, yes and YES. The only reason I would put Sweden lower on the list is because Sweden seems to only come out as scary at first glance, but is overly kind by his actions. He's willing to give Finland a place to stay at his house, even protect him and all the Nordics combined after the wars they've been through. Just like how Hima seems to be giving Finland a few touches to make his character more accurate to his people, he seems to be doing more with Sweden. Just look at his actions and tell me it isn't something you'd expect from a too nice person. I'd at least put Sweden on number 5 or 6. 2: I have a theory that not all Nations are human. Those like England possess magic, Russia can create curses and Romania has vampire fangs. If my theory is correct, this means that Romania and Moldova could be vampires, England could be a wizard and Russia could be a -demon- I mean wizard too heh heh. 1: I agree where you placed Ukraine, though there are Ukrainians that have families in Russia. The rocky relationships are VERY complicated. It would be more like Canada's and America's relationship after the Revolution in my opinion. We have to keep in mind that Hima is parodying the people from countries, not the government. Just because the two countries have horrid relations doesn't mean the people don't feel different. That being said, I do agree that there are definitely a lot of hard tensions, it just wouldn't be hatred. Hima did get it right when he created the comic of Ukraine wanting to talk to her brother and crying that her boss won't let her call him. It is referencing the separation of family from the separation of Ukraine from the Soviet Union. They still have problems separating families from Russia and Ukraine. It's awful and the governments aren't making it any better. The only thing I would say is inaccurate is the fact Ukraine doesn't cry bitterly over Russia's control over her to give some form of tension. It would make sense, the little brother feeling he should have control over his big sister and the big sister being all "you're not the boss of me. I'm the big sister." That's how America and Canada were during the War of 1812 with the competition over who is the oldest and wanting their own identity. Countries I think should've been mentioned in my opinion: Russia: Some things are accurate about him like how the countries look at him to most of his relationships and treatment towards other countries. The thing is, Russia smiles and is always happy. He also acts like a kid. These are the opposite of Russians. They are more blunt than the British and hardly ever smile. They're the kind that will tell you how it is. It is the reason why so many people from other countries vilify Russians. They are overly kind, but have trust issues. Russia acts incredibly naïve, which fits better with America, but NOT with Russia. Russians don't trust ANYONE. They're also critical, VERY critical, especially of America and Western Nations. They're not afraid to speak out to the point where they would make a British person speechless. That's pretty much it. Anyways, I enjoyed this video.

Here’s a list of why Korea got banned: 1. His personality is, Koreans are known as the Italians of Asia, so why is Italy not annoying but Korea is so annoying 2. We don’t grope people, we like to have physical contact like hugs and holding hands 3. We don’t like China or japan ( as mentioned in the video ) 4. And his habok is drawn wrong so Koreans found it insulting to our history 5. Koreans are known to overwork themselves and our education is intense 6. I understand copying like pepero and Kpop, but we don’t believe everything originated from Korea ( I keep editing this because I find so many more reasons btw I’m Korean)

I personally dont like yong soo's character either. 1) he is awfully happy and carefree for a country with many depressed, socially pressured and suicidal people ((no offense)) 2) he doesnt seem to hate or at least dislike china and japan so much since honestly, he hates them and there are a LOT of mutual feelings in that aspect 3) he's kinda self-centered and boisterous like "look at me! Look at me!" as if he has no shame, when in fact, lots of koreans are really concious ((again, no offense)) These things are, at least, what i know about how hima and some fans interpret him as. Honestly, this is more annoying rather than offensive though. Its over the top, but it aint really meant to belittle or humiliate korea i think

Hi! This is just my own opinon (Please don't kill me) 1. Italy is very anyyoiiiinggggg and useless to be honest. (That base on the fact durinng WW2). I think Korea support to be a cheerful character instead of a crybaby, that's too underestimate. 2. Don't think it's perverted, I think it in the other way, but its just my thingking. 3. About china: In the past, China was a very powerful emprie that got really much respect from small country. If you fight with China, weather win or not, still cause a lot of prolems. So even inside you hate China, but because of peace, trading and to have a good relationship with powerful country, prevented to act nicely. So not only Korea has, the other countries too! But it doesn't seem they go on actually well, so Korea act a bit sweeter and more listened to China than the other country. Maybe it's just the in the past, but this is a anime about history. So why not Japan: Oh my goss yessssssss, say Korea like Japan like say Cuba fall in love with America... If I'm not mistake, there was a time Korean even hate America just because they have relationship with Japan. 4. Not only Korea, the other countries too. There are to much characters, to much design, to much research for every countries, so obviously there will be shortcomings. But your people are sensitive, I'm understand that 5. I agree! 6.It because the history book! Some of them were come from Japan or China for the truth! But it isn't enough to said Korea copied everything since every country on the Earth stole the culture from each other...! P/S: Love your prolife pic!

Prussia is so inaccurate it drives me crazy. He should be just like Germany, but his character is so immature. In canon his serious qualities are actually mentioned, but they’re hardly ever shown, and the whole awesome thing doesn’t make sense. Prussia was know for its military and Prussian virtues thing too.

Perhaps, but that was never confirmed, and while I agree with that theory, his identity as a character is mainly Prussia and is his history as Prussia. New Zealand isn't too accurate either but he isn't as bad. I think what most soured my thoughts about New Zealand is his English voice actor has an Australian accent! Not even a stereotypical New Zealand accent that everyone laughs at. His relationship with England should be much stronger, as New Zealand is almost England down south. There's more influence on the sheep thing (ugh it isn't as if sheep roam the streets) and it really annoys me. There are so many other things that are interesting about New Zealand. They fought in both world wars, they have a lot of culture and were the first country to give women the vote. I don't know how New Zealand is persived to the rest of the world but really, we aren't THAT close to Australia (Well maybe by distance). The countries have very different climates and human rights. Sorry to rant and I know New Zealand isn't a very big character but there is so much wasted potential.

So my mother is Indian and I asked her and her side of my family about the India thing and they told me that it's kind of the same as the Taiwan one. Quite a lot of Indians love Britain despite the whole, we're going to baiscly inslave your whole coutry thing, strangely enough so it'd actually kind of accurate... personally, I actually love Britain and having a British father myself. England just have a lot of opportunities and has recently helped idea out quite a bit, especially with TNC stuff, so I guess that might be why. It's like America without most of the stuff people hate about it and we all know how a lot of the world obsesses over America.
