The hole is dug to keep the slop in place and to stop it going back into the river,it also has the added bonus of a neat and tidy finish...yes it does turn into soil again and the hole is dug out and the process starts all over again.

@IPdandU8me Nothing wrong with the smell of a bit of river mud..we used to play in that river as kids lol

Question, how come you dig a hole to put the sludge in? and after a few years will it just turn into soil again?
