What I loved about this series, is the treatment of loss by different characters. Ping pong really captured the struggle/pain these characters have to come to terms with instead of focusing on the sole victor, which makes this series beautiful.

This scene, and the scene where Kong finds a gray hair in the package of sweets his mom sent him as it cuts to her dyeing her graying hair. Those two scenes never fail to create a lump in my throat and reduce me to tears.

The fact that the show is not overly popular is actually a good thing. Look at "Undertale", that game has deep symbolisms and messages but it's huge fandom is easily the worst and ruins the experience for a lot of newcomers.

Kong wenge speaks decent Mandarin. Chinese u've heard before probably is Cantonese or Mandarin with strong Cantonese accent. Of course, Cantonese might not be the only possibility. Chinese has so many kinds of accents and dialects.

孔文革は良くも悪くも母親に縛られすぎていてしまったんだと思う。普通だったらそれは尽きることのない愛情で済んだんだけど、こと才能を競い合う場において彼は母親の期待に応えたい（＝中国一軍チームに復帰して周りを見返す）という目的で卓球を続けていた。でも再起を図る場においても打ち負かせれたことでもう2度と母親の期待に応えられなくなり、逆に彼を縛るものがなくなって、才能の羽を更に伸ばすことができたんだと思う。彼が最後に苗字を変えたのも、母親の愛情と期待という重力を振り切って更に飛躍することに成功した証だと個人的に解釈してる。

あとピンポンは才能と努力という二つの側面にだけ注目されがちだけど、実際にはスポーツ漫画にありきたりな「気持ちの強さ」という側面もかなり大きく影響するという解釈ができると思う。風間があれ以上伸びなかったのは、才能も少なからずあるかもだけど、やっぱりあれ以上に卓球に全力を注ぐ気持ちが止まってしまった（下がってもいないが）ことが大きいだろうし、星野は才能は勿論気持ちでも風間を遥に凌ぐ気持ちの強さがあったからこその勝利だった。才能、努力、心持の三つが全て揃った人間こそが、「ピンポン」という作品で最強になるのではなかろうか。

この漫画が出た当時、日本の高校にはたくさんの中国人留学生が来て、インターハイでは、第6シードあたりに来たばかりの中国人が詰められていていた。コンを見ていると日本で活躍できなかった留学生はどうなったのかと思わされた。彼らにすれば、当時日本に来ることは都落ちみたいなもの。当時の日本は団体戦でベスト8には入れずもがいていた時代。コンは留学生の辛さの象徴だったな。

I see it as 2 folds. Firstly, he said he always dreamt (having nightmares) of losing his keys. Could be metaphorically meaning that he can't go home. Secondly, he specifically said "as long as i'm not the only one without a ticket, that's fine." He meant that in failure, as long as he's not the only one he's fine. I interpret it as he don't one to be that 1 guy in his team that drops out. In the anime when he first appeared and destroys pecco, he looks forward to returning to his country and his team of pros, din't say a word about his home. In this scene his fears has manifested. On a literally, he's the only 1 without a ticket back to China (his coach is leaving him in Japan); metaphorically he's the only 1 in his team that din't make it as China's team of pros.

In chinese he first says: „i used to have dreams about losing my keys.“ then he furthermore clarifies: „if i could stop having dreams where i am the only one without a ticket (=> being left out), my life would be a lot easier.“ Taking into consideration what the coach asked him earlier: „When did you start living independently?“ and his answer „when i was 8. at that time i joined the provincial team (=> started living alone in the dorm there)“. Therefore the keys in his dream can be interpreted as his ticket to his life as a player. His biggest fear was being the only one dropped from his team.

What is worse is that this rhetoric of "there can always be multiple translations that are equally valid" is perhaps the worst type of thinking going into translation. Just because there is no such thing as "a perfect translation" doesn't mean you shouldn't try to get as close to it as possible. One way of doing that is by not being a schmuck and messing up the accuracy of it. I have a more pressing question here though. Why criticize the commenter above when his/her answer is correct? There is no interpretation when one is better than the other. Please do not be an apologist for poor translations.
