Columbia was the last animation studio to still make black and white cartoons for theaters. In fact, 1946, the year the studio closed (yet they had plenty of cartoons already made, and released them til 1949) was they stopped making black and white cartoons. But yes, Columbia was using color since 1934. Just not every cartoon.

They didn’t close as much as transform into what became UPA
@stephenholloway689310 ай бұрын
@Poever The difference was that UPA wasn't owned by Columbia they only distributed those shorts. Whereas with Screen Gems it was the in house studio.

stereotypically drawn black guy whose behavior is not stereotypical...can kick ass, control the situation, escape from danger using wits and is stands up to the threat with courage.

That was damn strange, I guess the black and white is OK, but it would have made a better cartoon in color, and this quirky toon deserves more recognition. The personalities of the 3 players, and the interaction between them, were brilliantly realized, (and much enhanced by great voice acting--(loved that ending and the ending monologue)).

Now THAT is what I call a dead ending. It all ended in a tie.

So Columbia basically invented a lot of early 1950s cartooning Styles? Wow!

I thought the kangaroo sounded like Stan Freberg. The ending is Tex Avery's "King Size Canary" in reverse!

Man, 1946 and still in black and white.... Columbia must have had the lowest budgeted cartoon studio at the time.
@herr_crustovsky4 жыл бұрын
I think terrytoons had lower budgets. Perhaps Columbia didn't care about consistency between black and with and color shorts, and saved up a little money on some shorts to better others

I guess Harry Cohn jsut wasn't ready to keep up with the times. Columbia didn't release their first color feature until 1943. 1946's Jolson Story was the first one I can remember

They did release color cartoons starting in 1934 though

Thanks for information. IMDb credits Freberg with the kangaroo. Did Jack Mather play the other two characters - Fuzzy Wuzzy and the ostrich?
