This weekend, Tyler and I tackled his bookshelves. It was a long process (8+ hours), but I'm proud of him for getting rid of over 200 books. Guess the exact amount in the comments below.

As an avid reader and former book “hoarder” myself I looooved this video! I appreciate how REAL these videos are, like you’re showing the dust and clutter on the shelves, I feel like a lot of decluttering videos are “pre-curated” to look perfect for the video. I moved house several times with the most recent being a 600 mile move to a different state. With that last move, 6 months prior I took all the books I had yet to read and told myself okay, if you don’t read these by the time we move you never will and you HAVE to get rid of them... and I did! I’ve curated my collection from 2 huge bookcases down to 2 shelves? I’m looking to downsize even more soon I think... I know kindle books aren’t the same but what I did was buy my favorite books on kindle that way I still have my favorites, but don’t have the physical copy weighing me down. Love this series!!

Thank you so much for this comment. I really wanted to document this journey as realistically as I could so that it could inspire real-life people to tackle this project if they're intimidated by those "pre-curated" picture-perfect videos. I'm so glad you're enjoying!

One of the biggest eye opening moments I had re my books was after years of tracking my reading habits with Goodreads, I could tell you, based on assumed average lifespan, how many books I was likely going to read in the rest of my lifetime. It was a huge motivator in my rethinking what books I wanted to read, keep to reread, and also pushed me to use the library more often vs buying (esp for fiction and less rare history books). I started this year with just over 500 (which might be about half of what I had from 10 years ago thanks to previous declutters) and have already decluttered another 50 this year with the aim to maybe read/ declutter 20-30 more. What I see now in my shelves and in my to read pile is so much light and freeing and way more motivating and enjoyable!

Since the filming on Saturday, I decluttered a bunch more books, including a TON of my comic books and trade paperbacks. You’ll all see the end result in the next video.

Brilliant! Funny, I’m only discovering these videos today, 4 months into lockdown, so I have a question for you.... have you read a book since SARS 😷 struck us?!!! My thinking is that if you haven’t read anything in lockdown... a perfect opportunity.... then perhaps you never will!!!???? just a thought 💭 Say hi to your lovely girlfriend and daughter. You guys make an authentically lovely family.

Dixie Tree - Heather has inspired me to initiate a reading regimen in lockdown. I’m one book down (Peter Brook’s “The Empty Space”) and am on to my next one (“The Creative Habit” by Twyla Tharp). I’m trying to build reading in to every day and then, when done with certain books, to give them away.

“Me in book form” was a great remider of how strongly things can embody the issues we have with our identity. Great video.

As a book collector too, I know how hard his choices were😳! I’m going to say he may have gotten around 245ish and kept 700ish. My hardest thing is the crochet magazines. But there are books that I just don’t part with because I do reread them💕. Looking forward to seeing the paper sorting and the book update😁. Thank you for sharing, take care, stay safe and enjoy your family 💗🤗!

He keeps decluttering books as he puts them away now that I've gone! I think the number may be surpassing your guess! I don't know yet how many he kept. He still needs to count them lol

Okay...so keeping myself honest...I found MORE comic books (even more than the ones found during the Paper declutter). Need to cull those now too.

I definitely get where Tyler's coming from. I love having a big library of books in my house, including a decent to-be-read pile so I have plenty of choices when it's time to pick a new book to read. I have gotten rid of/sold some that don't spark joy, but it honestly hasn't been that many over the years. I think Tyler has way more books than me, though - I'm guessing he got rid of about 50 books and kept about 400.

Absolutely love this inspiring video and the hole series! Amazing content, I’m watching the hole series right now 🤩 I love books and love to have a collection, but nowadays I only keep the ones I plan to reread and try to borrow alot from the library instead of buying. With that said I do have an entire shelf with TBR, but one book at the time...

I have around 100 books "to be read" so I got the struggle ^^ I thought I would read more during lockdown, but my mental health decided otherwise However, I'm slowly getting back to reading, and get around 10 books off of the pile !

It is amazing how much money you can make taking discarded books to used books stores once they are reopened.

I felt bad for the Junior high shirt. If you still loved it, you should’ve kept it. This is your journey. Remember that. Heather is there to help and motivate you. But you have to be happy with your decisions.

Really great reminder here. I definitely have a different perspective on helping others declutter now that I’ve made mistakes in how I went about it. 💕💕💕

Oh, I am sorry to say that I profoundly suck and have read a total of zero books from that shelf. In fact I have really fallen off a cliff when it comes to my reading habits. While others have taken the time during the pandemic to get back to reading hi on the other hand have regressed profoundly (much to my great shame) and not been able to get through more than two books in the past 12 months.

Ok, wonderful job of using the MK and inspiring me. However, l really did have a criticism. I completely disagree that “sleeping” books don’t inspire. Some people have entire libraries in their home. Tyler clearly derives joy from Books on the shelf! I get the tidy thing, but if the books are kept clean why limit him to the one in two out... obviously won’t work at a certain point because he is clearly keeping all the drama books/ plays. I guess you all just don’t have space. But one idea is better shelving (high up along the ceiling for reference books)! The other is l think in the spirit of what sparks joy sometimes the MK method just has its limitations. What about collectors? Would you ask Jay Leno to MK his cars!!!

His voice indicates how traumatic it is to part with things that have been a “security blanket” for years. Not criticizing, but relating too him.

They were purchased from Lowe’s. They were all press board and, frankly, not great. I have yet to find a really good bookshelf system that is long lasting, and able to stand up to the rigors of the occasional move.
