My shelves of fabric were in dire need of a good straightening, and I thought that this was a good opportunity to ask myself "Does this spark Joy?"
(The answer is YES, always yes! All the fabric sparks joy!! But some have maybe a little less spark than others.)

As some one who regularly makes crazy quilt yardage out of scraps, I am greatly amused by your perspective of 'Tiny pieces of fabric.' My classification for 'too small' of a scrap is less than 1.5cm in width or length because that's the minimum that will result in a visible patch after seam allowance is taken from either side. Too small scraps to sew get shredded and used as stuffing when i make plushes or trapunto appliques.

Lol, I used to live with a quilter, so I totally get it. If I ever do end up taking on a quilting project, I am excited for all the new fabric I will hunt for :D

lol I cut tiny scraps into 2 1/2" squares or 2" strips. anything smaller gets chucked in a bag to be recycled. Everything else gets used. I do use my tiny scraps to stuff things though if I know I need it. For example I took my recycle bag and used the scraps to stuff a doll mattress for my niece that I made.

It also helps to have a friend help- an experienced costumer buddy of mine helped me be ruthless. One of the pieces of fabric that I got rid because we decided the green color and tine period didnt suit me, ended up on a redhead who does Italian Ren and she looked AMAZING. That made me so happy actually.

Yes, it is great to get help as you always have a reason to keep something! Just make sure it is a friend who will be honest with you and not say yes to be nice, or is afraid to say to no for fear of making you angry. I had someone help me when I purged my enormous closet of clothes just prior to moving to a much smaller apt. Tried everything on and she said yes, or no it did not look good on me. That was painful but necessary, and I really do not miss them now. Feel better about the way I look now too, more confident.

I finally got through to the "reveal", and what I love about your space, is that most of the "sewing rooms" I see are geared more towards quilters, and yours is my kind of a space. I haven't quilted anything since 1990. I sew things for myself, the kids, and the home, and knit, crochet, weave, paint, draw, dye, paint on fabric (fabric medium and Derwent Inktense pencils are wonderful!), and just do a bit of this and that. Because of having kids, I'm branching out into toy food and plushies now. And aspire to learn to spin next. It's all very space intensive, and I don't really have the storage to create that space right now... I'm already growing cotton in my laundry room, planning on retting some nettle fibres from my weed patch by the barn, and am shopping for sheep, so I'm about as deep down the crafting hole as it goes.

also, please make a video of projects one could do with just 1-2 m. (yards) of fabrics, that would be really great :) (I also think it's a good idea to keep some fabric "scraps" from previous projects in case you need to repair clothing, but that might not be as necessary if you're not a fighter, hehe).

You came up with a great system for storing your yardage on the boards, and I'm so impressed again that you had the patience to UN-roll all that yardage, cut down the boards, and re-roll. Flopping the red satin on your head - priceless!

My grandmother, circa 1938, used cabbage to teach me how to sew. I made cushion covers, edging for a lot of things. We didn’t have a sewing machine at that time so all our clothing was either hand made, my mother was a wiz at that even though she worked outside the home, as well as my father. It was the depression you know. But I digress. I remember that the tiny back stitches of which my grandmother insisted, and which I had to replicate exactly, (and had to rip out and redo), have served me over and over. I have loved sewing ever since, and now I’m getting to the point where I have trouble seeing well enough to sew. I used the method you are using to rid my life of a great deal of fabric, patterns, etc. and have been unhappy about that since. Be sure you’re absolutely correct about the things you get rid of.

I pretty much always buy an extra bit of yardage when buying for a specific pattern. One never knows when an extra half yard/meter will be necessary. It does mean, though, that I have smaller pieces of fabric left over. A couple of years ago when I made lots of masks, those came in handy. It's fun to have matching masks to go with your clothing.

All hail to the queen of tidying 🙌🙌🙌 😁 I really, really like the cardboard system, you came up with. Looks very pleasing as well as being very tidy! A+ The best, I could come up with, was sorting them by type and then store them burrito style in boxes. And yes, some of them, I have for 10+ years probably 😆 I never actually went full KonMarie on my place, but I do think, the ‚does it spark joy?‘ question is a sensible one to ask. It did help me, to let go of some stuff, I definitely don’t miss.

My fabric is stored almost exactly like your method, only I used the bolt cores from the fabric store (many will give them away for free). When you were measuring, I actually said aloud, “make sure you subtract for your fabric” because I did the exact same thing! Fortunately, my shelves are movable, but it was still a lot of work! If in the future you find the foam board is too flimsy, don’t use a single depth of cardboard, use the bolt cores (they’re reinforced). You can even cut off one end so it fits your shelves without sacrificing too much of their strength as long as you leave the other end intact. Then you can write on the end your yardage and the material type so you don’t have to keep doing burn tests. I would like to see how you organize your sewing space; I need ideas! Thanks for the video!

That's a fantastic way to store fabric. I'm using cardboard tri-fold project boards instead of foam core. I bought nine boards from the dollar store which only allows me to wrap 18 pieces of fabric but it's a start. I may even do this with my embroidery fabric stash which is far more extensive than my fashion fabric stash. Wrapping it all up may even free up a shelf. 😁

For fabric that is too large, use some storage baskets that you can slide out, and for smaller or finer fabric, use shoebox, or other types of boxes that suit your shelving. I used a couple different sized card pieces that I could use as templates to fold fabrics that suited my boxes or shelves. I also measured the fabric and I wrote the measurement onto card tags that I pinned to the fabric so that I'd know exactly how much I had without pulling it out. My fabric looks fabulous now, and I enjoy opening the cupboard doors and feel great! I did the same with my laces, bias binding, elastic and zappers. I put all of my ribbons onto card that fitted into the baskets that I'd purchased in various sizes so that they would fit around each other. Book cases are also terrific for storing fabrics, etc because the shelves can be moved higher or lower for whatever you need to store and you can still see everything easily.

I didnt have any shelves in my sewing space so I bought some dowel rods and twill tape and made a hanging wall system. The fabric folds over the dowel rod and you get a pretty waterfall of fabrics. They are all easy to see and take in and out :) I also used some cheap curtain hooks to hang the contraption on. In a way, I kinda made an art piece on my wall lol

I really enjoyed and valued this video and its content. It's really helpful for me to witness creators' methods of organizing their supplies to see what actually works and doesn't work for them. I was raised with no organizational instruction whatsoever, so this was very helpful, and even helped motivate me to fold most of my months-gone-unfolded baskets of laundry while watching. I do wonder if you've stuck with this system, or if you've moved on to something more effective for you personally, so I'd be interested in an organizational update video as well.

(some unsolicited advice) I should say, after watching two people form the costume community (a year after, lol) I should also say that I too have followed the “trend”, however, I know that for those of us with fatigue and other conditions involving conserving energy, I find that doing one garment/item/fabric a day instead of throwing it all on the floor and having to work through it really really helps accomplish the same task. I’m very happy with what I’m left with and what I got rid of. Had I thrown it on the floor/bed and looked at the mountain, I would have shoved it back and collapsed with fatigue while regretting making an even worse mess. ❤️

Fabric storage solution for a particular problem: I used to live in a very small house, my sewing room had to become the nursery so my fabric needed to be evicted. New plastic trash cans on wheels were cheaper and stronger than tubs, and had lids that locked tight. So out to the garage they went. When I wanted to sew, I would wheel the cans out into the daylight, sort the fabric I needed on a clean blanket in the yard, and pack it back up again. Not the best solution, but the fabric stayed clean and fresh and pest free sealed up tight in the cans.

Ideas for 1 to 2 yards of fabric or less. 1. Scarves or shawls. When I saw you toss the red linen into the discard pile, I cringed. It would make a lovely shawl. 2. Purses, tote bags or reticules. 3. A short cape. 4. A short skirt made from extra wide fabric. 5. Wool makes a lovely quilt. It does need to be dry cleaned. 6. Children's clothes. 7. Doll clothes. 8. If you have enough width, a summer top or pajamas tops or bottoms.

Didn't "watch" it till the end, but listened while hand-sewing. For small pieces: I love make bags and totes, pencil-cases, pouches ... You don't need much vor them, they are quick and fun to make, usefull and you can give them away if you end up with too many.

Ideas for your blue plaid fabric that you've had since you were a child: Make a quilt or a throw. If quilting isn't up your alley, maybe a friend who quilts? The red gold fabric. it would look awesome as a jacket or a holiday dress. Something A line with bare shoulders?

I tend to buy by the bolt, so the bolts stay on the board with all the pertinent info, go into "dish barrels," a particular size/type of moving box that is just the right height and holds several bolts with the top of the board with all the info easy to read. I keep my patterns in the plastic drawer/dresser/storage thingy that I got most of them in. Two full drawers dedicated to patterns. The rest go for notions and tools, and one drawer for the very small scraps that are a bit too big to go in the trash. My ol' man is a mover so he has gotten TONS of free stuff. Part of the massive amount of free stuff has been countless sewing machines, fabric, and in one case, nearly an entire sewing room's worth of accoutrements! That's where i got that plastic storage dresser already stocked with a full drawer of patterns, a drawer of nothing but thread, and two drawers of various notions and tools! Also how I discovered that the dish barrels are so prefectly tailored to organize my collection full (or what started out as full) bolts of fabric. When your making your kids pajamas and dresses I have four girls and a stepdaughter), yes, you're going to go through full bolts of fabric, and Joann offers discounts when buying by the bolt these days, so it's totally worth it. What you dont use now will inevitably get used nonetheless.

An idea to store smallish cuts of fabric (1-5 yards I'd guess) is to fold them the size of a file folder, and hang them over a hanging file folder in a file box. Inside the hanging file you could store notions, inspiration, pattern, or just notes about what you thought you might intend to do with each fabric, or what its content is, or where you bought it, etc.

I don't know if you're still looking into small-scrap projects, but maybe you can look into Dutch liberation skirts! They were made out of scraps, that sometimes had some kind of historical or personal significance, which were the only things people had after the 2nd world war. These skirts were worn yearly on liberation day! Juul Thijssen has a great example with English subtitles!

What about a Medieaval Quilt project for your 1yard or less pieces? I'm not familiar with the dates etc, but I do know that embroidered and quilted bed covers were made for well-to-do households, in 1400-1500. There'a place up the road from me called Ford Green Hall (you can find it easily online) where the interior is still period. They have a group of stitcher re-enactors who do a weekly sewing circle to make and mend all the fabrics and laces they use at the hall. If we ever get back to normal I'll take a trip over there to talk to them.

I enjoyed the video. I need to do much of this in many areas, but I'm still resisting. As far as video ideas, how about a video on how to select fabric for a historical project? I have a lot of difficulty with that when I got to fabric stores and I'm trying to pick out a fabric for something I want to make. So basic pointers and ideas on what to look for and what to avoid for say basic garb or period projects would be great and very helpful.

I'm new to uour channel and this is a brilliant idea. I just recently moved into a new house and have my own sewing area. I have tons of fabric that I nees to go through and get rid of. Lots of it I inherited from other people who were destashing. After various moves and stuff getting packed away I really have no clue what I have, with the exception of my knits. I know what I have in that. Problem is I have more that I ordered coming in about six to eight weeks. Well frost step I guess would to be to get a closet or shelf to store it all with. Also can you do a tour of your sewing room and explain everything you have and how it helps you function in there. That would be super helpful for some of us looking to set up a sewing space with out saying crap, where did I put that/those . . . ? (fill in the blank) amyways thanks for doing that it gives me great I aspiration to tackel going through my mini hoard.

Great video!! I have been procrastinating the sorting and purging of my fabric : ( I have been a collector since before you were born. I have cleared out over the years and did a major purge when we moved across the country. Of course I have recollected since moving to Victoria, BC and I have bits that I think are so cute for baby clothes for my granddaughter but my daughter doesn't share my taste for her daughter's outfits! What's a grandma to do?? It has gotten out of control again and it is my goal over Easter, to have it all sorted out and visible on my shelves. I like your idea of the boards to hold the fabric instead of it being stored in bins and out of sight. Wish me luck and it would be great to see videos of the other sorting for a sewing/craft room. It's a very challenging prospect.

Wrapping the fabrics around storage boards is GENIUS. I currently have quite a stash of fabric in several (very unorganised) plastic boxes, which could definitely benefit from this! I just need to actually set up the storage in my craft room first, so I actually have somewhere to put the fabric once it's nicely wrapped :)

I apologize for asking so many questions. You happen to remember where you got the fabrics at these times? Do you remember the designers or print names? •turquoise fabric at 13:07 (I think you used it for a dress and I think that corset.) •red and gold fabric at 14:07 •red and black velveteen fabric at 14:52 I happen to love scrolls and can never find prints intricate enough for tapestry-style dresses and decor.

*cringe* nooo~! This is torture! 😂 well at least a few fabrics you threw out killed me, like that gorgeous red and blue squares one! (Favourite colours) But the hound fabric would have been great to line pockets, reticule or anything else that might not show much but just knowing it’s there may bring you a smile 😊 I have so much fabric but my issue is while I have plans and uses for it, I don’t have the capacity to sew as much as I wish to. But no way am I getting rid of my fabrics 😂 they all make me happy or I wouldn’t get it in the first place (not a person who gets fabric “just in case” or because “it’s a good price”)

Even if you don't get rid of a single bit of fabric, it can be helpful to go through your entire stash and give it all a nice refold. When you are done, you have a much better idea of what all you have in your inventory, and sometimes as you hold individual pieces, you realize the perfect project for it, and can start planning to make it a reality :D
