When my mother gets a greeting card, she opens and reads it at the mailbox in the lobby and drops it in the recycle bin before going back up to her apartment. Her sister, on the other hand, still has all her cards from the past 60 years. We're not all cut from the same cloth, that's for sure. Both are lovely, caring people.

OMG I'm so snowed under with papers! I have been decluttering papers for 3 days now and I'm still not finished. I think I had around 10 large boxes full of papers. I'm keeping greeting cards as they allow me to feel comforted when I miss a loved one who has passed on, to still have the cards they sent me. I have a nice box to store them in, so it's attractively stored. I also have a bad habit of cutting out recipes and not putting them in a binder, so I'm going to work on that as soon as I get rid of all the stuff I want to throw away or shred. I'm keeping yard waste bags to put the recyclable papers in (makes it easier to carry them out to the recycler), and 2 large resealable plastic bags full of financial documents that I need to take to the bank to shred. I had some piles of papers in boxes, but others in stacks on the floor. I started with the boxes, as that freed up containers for other donations as I declutter the other categories, and also it freed up some organizers I can use in my bathroom closet. I didn't do the KonMari steps in order, because I knew papers was the biggest problem I wanted to be solved, and I don't think I could stand to wait long enough to sort all my clothes and books before tackling papers. When I'm done with papers, I will backtrack and do the rest of the Konmari steps in order.

My one concern with getting rid of your bank and credit card statements. Each institution/bank keeps the statements for a limited time period. So please everyone be mindful of this. Are you using the appropriate lubricating oil in your shredder after every few hours of use? Not keeping it oiled can make it overheat and eventually burn up the motor. Bottles of shredder oil is sold at the same stores that sell shredders [Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, etc].

For those who think they're ruined their shredder many machines have a duse in the machine or along the power cord near the plug. Check if the fuse just needs resetting or replacing and you may be able to salvage your shredder. If not, do not overwork your next one by only doing smaller batches, allowing it to cool down, and keep the shredder oiled properly [not using food oils!] A reasonable substitute might be liquid sewing machine oil [not grease].

Greeting cards that you have received would fall under the category of Sentimental (not Paper), and would therefore be done last, with all other sentimental things. As you go through the Konmari process, when you come upon something sentimental and find yourself wrestling with whether or not to keep it, no matter what it is (it could be a t-shirt or a book or a picture...anything...), you can put it aside with all other sentimental things, to be dealt with last. The paper category involves just paper(s) that have zero sentimental/emotional meaning, and therefore you can go through them relatively quickly, even if you have a lot of it. Of course some papers in this category (like marriage and birth certificates) will have some sentimental value, but the answer to whether or not you keep them is an obvious yes, so you won't find yourself wrestling (and therefore slowed down), when encountering them. Don't try to deal with sentimental things in the midst of other categories, or you'll stall and feel defeated. Doing sentimental things last also allows you to hone your spark joy decision making, so by the time you get to this most difficult category, you have practiced and streamlined the ability to decide what to keep, which will help you get through it.

Why would you not just have one "treasure box" for your girl and one for your boy to keep some of the nicer cards (you could still write the year on them)? Where is the advantage in filing them and why even keeping them ALL. Does this filing cabinet not take up much more space than a small case for each child? Also I think that if they are older and can read, they may enjoy making little piles and sorting through them by year or by person.
@TheGoldProject9 жыл бұрын
My kids are 2 and 6, so right now my goal is just to contain them. They both like to draw on everything. So I am just trying to make sure that doesn't happen. When they get older, I will probably create each one a nice album to keep. You just gave me a good idea. That would make an awesome graduation present. Thank you! :)
@FreshJoy299 жыл бұрын
+The Gold Project Just a thought... I'm not saying that your children will be traveling all of their lives from place to place like I have, but in these hard economic times, as a single person, I have had to go from one apartment to another. In fact, the crazier the world gets and the more crisis situations hit like floods, earthquakes, etc, it might be better to have only what you need in terms of clothes in a backpack and toiletries and buy what you need like dishes, kitchenware, etc. when you get to a new location from a thrift store like I have had to do quit often. Of course sentimental items like your kids cards or photographs are not something I am easily able to part with... and they don't fit in a backpack so it becomes one more item you have to remember to move with all your other stuff, usually in the form of 2 or more photo albums... I would like to suggest perhaps taking the cards, or even photos, every once in a while to the library and using their scanning device. Some libraries have copiers with scanners attached to them, you can scan the document and email it to a special email address for each child. You can then open the email and save the info to a flashdrive, or just leave it in the email for them to check out later. Then throw away the card and have one more less thing to organize, clean, or keep track of. The sentimental document is safe in an email from fire and flood and doesn't have to be carted from home to home to home. I know that a lot of people still think that the American lifestyle is often "Get a mate, get a baby, get a home mortgage, stay put." but for more and more of us, life just doesn't turn out like that, and if they decide single life is best for 10-15 years or more, making a way for them to have less to carry when they leave your home might be something to consider.

This might be a good clean out, but not in keeping with Marie Kondo's method. You would not have individual files for Target and Lowes. Have you thought about a file that says "Current Month Statements" ? Then Target, Lowes, Visa, etc go in one file and out at end of month when new bill comes. Marie Kondo talks a lot about not using small categories - it is time consuming. I think the paper purge is the hardest. My husband and I both have our own businesses, own property, etc. "Spark joy" does not apply. What we need for legal reasons is a major factor. I am wondering if scanning is too time consuming. Tidier, certainly, but one more step, and then time on the computer to file.
@TheGoldProject9 жыл бұрын
I am needing to reread her book and go back through several areas. I am moving some of these things into binders and eliminating the files all together because they aren't needed. Yes! The paper is so difficult. The Lowes file basically holds account numbers and product info we have purchased there. No monthly bills.

It will instill good paper management skills instead of burdening them with stuff they feel guilty for not keeping because You saved it for them.

For bills you only need the most current copy of a bill. You do not need to keep years worth of bills. I used to do that and realized that it was completely unnecessary. For taxes you need to keep him for 7 years. Legal things will vary depending on the item some things you might need to keep forever some things you might only need to keep until the issue is settled. If you are in doubt about that and ask your lawyer that you worked with on whatever particular legal issue it was.

+The Gold Project what you are doing is NOT her system. it is our American idea of her system...And it will not be effective. you only have to tidy ONCE in your life. read the book before you claim to know what you are doing!

+Teri 2011 I am sorry that my video is upsetting you. I read the book, marked pages, took notes, etc. I am even part of a KonMari facebook discussion group. The way I interpreted the book has been effective for me. That filing cabinet in the video still looks the exact same way 6 months after completing this step. Have you checked out Jen from Pretty Neat Living's KonMari Series videos? They might be helpful to you. :)

+Teri 2011 Please take into consideration that people may interpret the book in many different ways, and each one may or may not be helpful. In this instance her interpretation was the most correct and helpful way for her.

+Silver Flair She clearly did not read the book. By skimming the book, she failed to grasp even the most rudimentary principles of the method. I expect a vlogger to have read a book, if they say that they have, AND especially if they choose to review the author's method.

Marie Kondo SPECIFICALLY says not to come up with a crazy complex organizational system. The moment a card is received, it has served its purpose and should be thrown out.

+Miss Micah You are correct. Her book did say that, but the cards that have a system are my kids' cards. I feel when they get older they can make the decision whether they want to keep them or not. I have several cards from my grandparents who aren't alive anymore and I am thankful I kept them. They are pretty special to me. :) I do have several binders with cards that were given to and from my husband. Those bring me A LOT of joy and I won't part with them. We write special messages in our cards to each other. I still look back on them and smile. ;)

Be careful about manuals online. They may not be there when you need them.

Dump that whole file of greeting cards!

+Susan Taylor Those are my kids greeting cards. I do not feel it is my place to throw away greeting cards that their grandparents and relatives gave them. They can make that choice when they get old enough to look through them.

I guarantee you when your kids are in high school, college, and beyond they are not going to care about their 3rd bday card.

Guarantee for who? I appreciated cards received from people who had passed once I was old enough to understand what a card was. You can't guarantee anything about how someone else will feel about their own stuff.

The Gold Project my grandparents all passed before I was 10 years old ... my Mama kept all the cards they gave me and when I turned 21 she gave them to me in a binder! I cherish all their handwritten messages. ❤️

I definitely did. You should see my pile of recycling stuff at the moment. I have three trashbags full for this week. :)

The Gold Project Yaaay. Sorry, I recycle everything possible and I'm a minimalist so I try hard not to have random stuff laying around :} I love seeing others do the same!!

I’ve never seen anyone organize greeting cards like that. Impressive!
