I just got a few new things and everything was grey! My husband I don't think loves it but I love dark and comfy (also blue and sweaters). I did find a gorgeous scarf from the MET store (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and think I'll splurge on it to give my clothes some gorgeous dark purple and blue color and art- my favorite things. I love how unique style is for everyone. I've always appreciated your literal rainbow style!

Just before I opened this video, I had the epiphany that I don’t really like any of my clothes. I naturally gravitate towards a sort of smart casual style but I have to dress up in business professional clothes for work so thats what I own.

I don't have very many clothes and I haven't really for about 20 years. That being said, I always go through what I've got about every 4 months to see: do I still wear it, does it still fit, do I still love it, does it need repairing or replacing? Three years ago I decided to do the same thing you did. What makes me happy? I ended up with a lot of the old lady big baggy clothes that cover all the supposed flaws you have. I was never happy and felt overwhelmed. I'm 5'2" so everything was always too long and looked like a sack. I haven't bought anything new since Sep last year and have decided to thrift, make, or remake anything "new" for my closet. This will be the best way to bring out "me" in anything I wear because I will ultimately decide what it will look like. I'm learning a lot about tailoring and clothing construction. It is actually quite fun! At 56, I think I've finally figured it out. My absolute favorite clothing to wear has always been denim. I now just have 2 pieces (besides the obvious jeans), a lightweight dress and a jean jacket. I love them. I have several yards of denim waiting to be made into something too-just haven't discovered what they will be yet. Great video to get us all thinking a bit about our relationship with the clothes we wear and how it affects our mood/life.

I am so envious of that closet. I mean, I have one of those tiney little closets in a small house built in 1952, when the lady of the house only had 5 dresses. I am not a clothing hoarder by any stretch, but what I do have would look so much better with that extra space around d it!

I watched your video when it was first posted. At the time I was thinking that I didn't really have any kind of style before I had kids. Now that I stop and think about it I realized that I did. In highschool I liked to wear ties and vests with elements of late Victorian mens clothes. Now that I'm older and trying to rediscover my style I see myself going for a lot of the same kind of stuff plus casual dresses from the 1940s and 50.

Having no one style is fun. I too have some very dressy items I love but don't often get the chance to wear. Donate them? No chance. As it happens, I'm going to be 50 on Wednesday, and I'm now thinking it would be fun to go food shopping for our self-catering trip away in my glittery high heels, dressed like I'm going to a party. I describe my style as “eclectic” and wear what whatever I want. I love bright colors & tried to define my style once. That was a hoot! I felt like an imposter & like I was trying to be who Corporate America thought I should be. Now, while I still work for Corporate America, I tend to break their “rules” and stay true to me. I love your idea of ranking how much joy the items bring & need to go back through my closet with that in mind.

thank you for sharing that, makes perfect sense. i used to be a legal secretary, many moons ago, and one of the solicitors grouped our clients A, B, C and D. he wanted us to get rid of the D clients, then working towards getting rid of the C and so on until we only had CLASS A clients. I suppose in this regard, you got rid of your 'like' clothes but could eventually work up to getting rid of 'love' clothes, leaving only the OH MY GODDESS I LOVE THIS ITEM OF CLOTHING SOOOO MUCH group, yair?

A lady a friend told me about, used to go dancing and attend dressy affairs. She decided that, as she loved all these clothes and no longer attended lavish affairs, she’d wear them shopping and around the house etc. Apparently she was well known to appear in the local supermarket dressed to the nines in sequinned ball gowns and so on. Good for her!

@@HowToGYST - I'd love to use your technique of picking my week's wardrobe, but when I've tried in the past I either ditch what I picked b/c it isn't fititng in with what I want that day, defeating the whole purpose, or I'll wear something that doesn't make me feel good b/c I did pick it out ahead of time, so feel stuck with it. Any tips for that?
@HowToGYST

It may help to have a mix of different types of outfits so you have a good range to choose from. And they don't need to be tied to a specific day - you can simply choose 7 great outfits and then decide on the morning which one you'd like to wear that particular day. (I do this with my daughter - I choose 5 outfits for her for the school week, and each morning she gets to choose from those 5.) Or if you choose, say, 10 outfits for the week, you've got some extra wiggle room. =) You're not stuck with your decisions so don't be afraid to choose something else if it makes you feel better. And having that photo folder I talked about of all your favourites will be a great source of inspiration if you're still feeling a little unsure. Best of luck!

I'm OBSESSED with unicorns and were before they were trendy (both a blessing and a curse lol) but I feel like we are close to the same age with similar likes and current issues (jammies and hoodies lol) but for different reasons- I put on quite a bit of weight and while a lot of things don't look as good despite what the body positivity movement will have you believe (crop tops, short skirts and body hugging dresses) lol 😂. So while I have succumbed to my current way if dressing its for many reasons: 1) Depression is a given as u discussed, 2) insecurities= covered, 3) these types of clothes are more accessible in my size, 4) it's easy to know how a hoodie or sweat pants will fit vs something with a cute cut and therefore I don't have to feel uncomfortable asking for a dressing room and finally 5) also as u touched on- my social life is minimal and I don't leave for work so I often don't NEED to change! Tho thanks to ur vid a few weeks ago I have been trying to get dressed more often as well as put on makeup (which I used to be/still am obsessed with I'm just so down I rarely do it anymore). Anyways my point is thank you so so much for your videos, you're a God send to me and your videos are helping me mentally and physically clean up my world and its refreshing to find someone that you can both relate to AND look up to, ESPECIALLY on the internet which can often be more toxic than uplifting 💖

I've been doing exactly what you suggested with keeping an outfits photo folder on my phone for a couple of years! It really helps to hone in on what looks I really love versus just okay outfits. Great tip!!! I loved doing it so much that I started an insta account to share my outfit combinations and try out new looks. I could definitely see how doing this could help someone determine their signature style, if that's what they're going for. For me, I have three different modes: dressy office looks, classy casual looks, and hiking/outdoorsy looks. I keep to a moderately limited color palette of just my favorite shades to keep my wardrobe cohesive and so that I can easily match things up.

Thanks for this. It’s time for me to take the next step with my wardrobe. Try on clothes and create outfits. Take pictures. Create my own personal “Look Book”. I have a pair or two of pants that need hemming, And I need new shoes. One of my goals this year is to wear more of my clothes and make more of an attempt to feel “put together” when I leave the house. Feel pretty. Feel cool. Feel pretty cool! I’ve made a lot of jewelry and I love wearing it. But, I’ve been in a slump for the past year and rarely wear it like I once did. Time to rediscover pieces and make a few more to wear with my looks.

I've never much changed how I dress. I've always been a tomboy from day one, and have never been 'into' fashion. I'm happiest and most comfy in jeans or sweats, and that's pretty much my "uniform." I don't even own any dresses these days--I hate getting dressed up--it's my most UNcomfortable place to be. I feel exquisitely UNcomfy when dressed up. Have to worry about how I sit, stand, about spilling a drink or food, whether a skirt is hitched up in back, etc. No, I'll keep my everyday jeans, thanks. ;-) At my age (probably close to more than twice yours), I've come to the opinion that, if people don't like the way I look, they are free to look the other way! ;-) My closet is ranged by types, then by colors, light to dark from left to right... ;-) I hang a lot of things that most people keep in drawers, because I have very limited drawer space; they are shallow, and won't hold jeans and sweats, for example. So my drawers are for undies and socks; pajamas, and miscellaneous supplies like glasses cases and antacids. ;-) In your case, you could move that top shelf down within better reach for you, and it would still have enough hanging room for shirts... ;-)

I have found that stretch fabrics for business wear can feel like pajamas. Also, natural fabrics are more comfortable than synthetics. Dresses are great, since they can look very put-together, professional, or fancy while being loose, flowy, and comfortable. I think the traditional professional dress code isn’t very comfortable, but the modern twists introduced by Pinterest and avant-garde retailers have made it much more so.

I love a hoodie. My clothing is black tank top.... Black pants.... And black or dark grey hoodie or sweater if it is chilly. Now the pants are literally the only pants I like the way they fit on my body. I own several pairs of these. Tank tops to Same brand for the most part. This is what I feel most comfortable in and look at the least fat in. if I did find clothing items that I really liked that were more colorful and I thought looked good and fit me good and felt okay on my body I would wear them. Right now that's not the case I definitely don't have the confidence I used to. My old wardrobe what's full of hair that was an awesome color like purple or red. I would wear things like shiney light blue pants and rainbow drawstring pajama pants to school. I dress like I was going to a rave every day of my life. My clothing was covered and rainbow Brite or Care bears. Lots of bright colors. One of my shirts I wore all the time when my husband and I were dating was a green Frodo one. I love shirts with funny sayings. I bought myself one but put on weight so it doesn't fit well right now but it is a keeper. It has an orange on it and it says "can't concentrate". Which is actually a nod to a shirt that I used to wear in high school that a friend bought me. It's very accurate. 🤪 a friend of mine actually just got purple streaks in her hair done at a local beauty salon. I may end up doing that in the future. not sure yet the old me would have already drive than ever there and gotten it done. I definitely think that Mom in me feels a responsibility to look normal. But I'm definitely drawn to the people that wear the bright colors and color their hair and funky ways.

The important thing is to feel good in what you're wearing.

As a plus sized person it's very expensive and difficult to find cloths that fit and are at least moderately comfortable. Avenue went out of business, there is no Fashion Bug in my city, and Lane Bryant closed over 300 stores in the US, this really leaves me with only torrid and I very rarely have the money to shop there. I've resorted to wearing my husband s shirts and I'm down to two pairs of pants. Do you have any suggestions for how to style in such limited options?

I ran into this issue, but it was more of a hoarding in spite of the fact that I did not have funds to shop and my style choice halted once my life became home and work. So whatever was gifted to me, thrifted, or somehow ended up in my hands, I kept. I didn't have a lot, but I did have "Too much." The way I overcame this was to really sit down with my clothes and be brutally honest with myself to bring down my wardrobe. Anything I was keeping out of guilt was automatically donated, regardless of how gorgeous it was, and I reminded myself it was okay NOT to like it and give it way. "Bye-bye flamingo pink shirt with those beautiful rose emblems I never even once put on....because I do not like pink." Things I liked, but wasn't sure of, I asked "Will I ever, REALLY wear this?" Yes's - Put in a pile to try on for a second opinion. No's- Donate. For the "try on" If I felt good IN IT (Not comfortable, mind you - because I had a lot of comfortable T-shirts). If I really liked how I looked in it, the shape, etc..I kept. Anything that brought on scrutiny or uncertainty went into the No pile. Yes, I did try on a few shirts more than once. But usually the second go around gave a more clarity. I allowed myself 1-2 "But what if" shirts. But that was it. Things I loved, but did not like anymore, same thing. "Will I ever, REALLY wear this?" and go from there. It took me a bit to really narrow it down. Then I mixed and matched shirts/blouses and jeans (I have two pairs of black trousers, so...it was just really the shirts). I also wear the bottom I plan to shop a top for or vice versa. Really helped. I'm still working on getting my style back after being stagnant for so many years. I'm hoping taking a friend to look over my closet and maybe a small thrift trip will do. Hope this helps, if you have not yet tried it.

The dresses don't get all that much wear because I don't often attend fancy events but yes, I wear all the "everyday" stuff.

@@HowToGYST I wish I had more dresses, I only have 2! And they're not very fancy, unfortunately. My closet is about the size of a phone booth so probably good that I don't. You're lucky to have such a beautiful closet.

We were very limited for closet space in Ireland so it was a struggle. I'm very grateful for the extra space we have here!

Nope. I don’t agree with this at all.its all going to depend on your mood of the day. No one is going to wear a sparkly ball gown every day.

How to Get Your Shit Together you know yourself some times you go to buy clothes and nothing works and nothing fits and you just aren’t feeling it. This is the problem with your recommendation in this video. Some days you love your tracksuits. By going by what you love on a day you are automatically discounting those things you love on another day. Of course you’re going to always love that rainbow ball gown because of the memories associated with it. Just a silly suggestion IMHO

Debbie, you must have missed some of the concepts of the video. Wear what "sparks joy" for that "particular day, occasion and mood."

@@debbie1_b Hey Debbie - you must've skipped the coupla' times she actually said, "You're not going to pick up the kids [go to the shop, etc.] in a sparkly gown." Toward the beginning, Laura even said her original problem in tackling the closet was that she doesn't want to always "dress for her brand" or only dress in her "signature style" (as popular social media keeps pushing). So ... I think you'd actually agree with Laura's philosophy. (Maybe re-watch the video - and *then* comment.)
