I just wanted to say, IT IS enough torque for this car with a 2.0 petrol engine. I knew this because i own this car thank you. This mpv cannot be compare with those AMGs and M series or those sports car. Beside , this car have the hill start assist ,so that when you going uphill , the car will not struggle that much.

Edwin Tan thanks for the input. Just went to Toyota S3 Wangsa Maju this afternoon. Initialy plan was to check out Vios as 2nd Car. But the Innova X test drive Car was so cun!! I just cant help it. Did the test drive and suprisingly was very impressed with the new look and space, I used to take Innova old model for my daily travelling commuting from JB to SPore. So i had this initial bored and negative impression of Innova. But this new model just a total 180degree turn over! With MYR5k discount + free goodies, the offer is sooo tempting!!

17:11 correction: The Innova is also offered with a petrol engine overseas. It's either the 2.7 liter engine from the Fortuner (India, Middle East, South America), or the familiar 2.0 liter engine (everywhere else, including Indonesia). As far as I know, in Thailand, the upper trims are only offered with a diesel. In Indonesia, it's a 50:50 balance between petrol and diesel.
@KonWaiLuen4 жыл бұрын
Of course. Though my point is, if you have the option of a diesel, this 2.0 petrol engine becomes a redundant option.
@NokiaHumanForm6 жыл бұрын
Some ppl here have to stop their "eh Kon don't criticise the performance of the Innova just because you have driven an AMG/M pwr car before." NONSENSE. An underpowered car would only lead to higher fuel consumption and more frustration when u need the extra acceleration while rushing to a destination. I'm standing with u Kon. I don't hate the Innova but if I get an Innova one day, I would definitely have to turbocharge it. I am only asking for the Innova to have 180hp. That's all.
@KonWaiLuen6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting my point of view. That being said, don't think got many such comments also lah. Vehicles like the Innova don't need a lot of power, but they certainly could use a healthy dose of torque from low revs so as not to stress the engine under heavy loads.

This thing is crazy popular in india. They hike the price every year still around 6000 units a month are sold. Heck even the fortuner sells 2000 plus units a month. The diesel is popular but there is a 2.7 petrol available and im thinking to buy it.
@themainmanontheblock6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kon. Nice review as always. Anyway just to share a point of view from other peoples perspective on diesel cars. As of right now many younger generation will buy a petrol and mid price cars "depends on income but in general 50-150 Grand cars" In our mind thats a small or relatively faster cars. The SUV is mostly for older generation that have a growing family 35 and above in general. The Stigma of diesel is a Utilitarian Vehicle and lower class does come to play. Therefore in Malaysia at least it is perceived that diesel engines are not of standard compare to the petrol. Whether it is true/fair or not, that is the perception and that plays a big role in "sales" . Im sure the diesel is a more efficient engine but with the perception as it is now, it will not translate to sales. Again it is my opinion after I ask most of my relatives why they bought SUV in petrol and if they would consider buying a diesel. Anyway keep up the good work.

@KonWaiLuen6 жыл бұрын
Fair point, themainmanontheblock. Your argument on the diesel stigma is correct, though I would also add that if you're looking at monocoque-based MPVs like the Serena or Biante, you have to go petrol. But the way I see it also is that the Innova is a vehicle of more rugged underpinnings - when one buys an Innova, the main criteria is robustness over refinement, and hence my belief that a diesel engine better suits this vehicle's brief. Thanks for watching!
@Banom7a6 жыл бұрын
fun fact: they used to offer diesel Unser but because it wasn't so popular, they decide not to offer it with the Innova.
@KonWaiLuen6 жыл бұрын
Don't recall that in Malaysia. As far as I know, the Unser in Malaysia were all petrol. Unless... of course, the Unser Diesel was THAT unpopular that most people don't even remember it. Haha.

17:08 Taiwan used to have the 2.7 for the first gen innova. Then few years later they replaced that with the 2.0 engine.
@c1987ks6 жыл бұрын
The 2.0 liter engine should be coupled with the 'yawn' CVT transmission to maximize the torque usability. As a 07 innova manual driver, i have to agree the diesel engine make a lot of sense to haul this big ass mpv. Often i have to either drag the 2nd gear or lug the 3rd gear to move out from a junction without traffic. Not to mention the the short gearbox that cause the engine to scream at 3.2 k rpm at cruising speed of 110kph
@mrchongyl6 жыл бұрын
Chua Ken Seng oh god no, imagine cvt whine every time you want to accelerate. The 6 speeder on the Innova is not bad I would say, just that it shifts too slow. At 110km/h, if I’m not mistaken, the engine rev is about 2.2k
@KonWaiLuen6 жыл бұрын
I think the 6AT is a pretty okay transmission. Just can't mask the engine's lack of torque when you need to accelerate.
@c1987ks6 жыл бұрын
Since the innova is based on imf platform, I hope someone out there is 'wise enough ' to try to plunk an hilux engine into that chassis. 'legally'
@leekikwang17256 жыл бұрын
Toyota cvt not as bad as proton or honda cvt. No whinning sound at high speed and the shift sometimes feel like u r driving a 7 speed auto gearbox. But when u press full throttle only you will see the characteristic of cvt, stuck at 5000 rpm. (Tested on sienta and altis)

The 2nd Gen Petrol 2.0 Innova is fuel efficient, affordable to maintain and serve its purpose as a people carrier. This MPV is meant to carry families consisting of precious/fragile passengers like infants, little kids and old folks. When we transport them, there is no requirement for us to go on the fast lane and trail the car in front of you in order to prevent other vehicles to overtake your MPV. MPVs uses more left lanes and goes in a cruising speed. True in the sense that for climbing hilly terrains a bit more effort is required but hey, destinations are reached safely, that's more important. I am sure you have driven AMGs, M series turborised cars where the pick-up is within 5-7 seconds to reach 100km. Obviously after driving this MPV, you feel the lag..There are differences between fighter jets vs bombers planes and speed boats vs super tankers. Does this make sense..? Love your reviews anyways Kon...
@KonWaiLuen6 жыл бұрын
Yes sir. I get where you're coming from. Agree that the Innova is not meant for enthusiastic driving, hence my advocacy of a medium capacity diesel engine with low horsepower but high torque. The objective here is not for the car to accelerate hard, but merely to let it pull gently without straining the engine.
@davidckj16 жыл бұрын
Low end torque really does matter alot, that's why I always tell my uncle auntie relatives and friends to reconsider when buying large vehicles like these with small petrol, non forced-induction/turbocharged engines. In the end and they just say "it doesn't matter laaa, your uncle drive very slow one and we don't want noisy diesel sound..." The ultimate victim of not enough torque is my friend's dad who uses his first gen 1.6 non-turbo Proton Exora for heavy loading and end up going backwards instead of forward while trying to accelerate up a hill. They ended up reversing far away then accelerate VERY hard on a flat road to keep a fast momentum up for that hill climb. Keep in mind that the old Exora only has 150nm of torque and the Innova is 190nm which is not far away from being under torque and don't forget the Innova is nearly 1.7 tons which weights almost 200kg more than the Exora. So imagine the car with added 6-7 people of weight in the car trying to get to Genting...
@ganzlim43896 жыл бұрын
Yes torque is far more important than horsepower to a large car like Innova. Just to share that my sister family (5 adults, 2 kids) used to go up to Genting with their Toyota Avanza 1.3 auto with the remaining space is full of luggage, no joke :)
@JM-jn1wb6 жыл бұрын
I am totally agree with you
@NokiaHumanForm6 жыл бұрын
Underpowered cars tend to have worst fuel consumption. My friend's facelifted Axia can only average around 15km/l with relaxing driving. My iriz 1.3 on the other hand can do 14km/l with occasional full throttle. I hope that now you know the Innova deserves slightly more power to make things more efficient.

Diesel cars cause dangerous levels of pollution that is why they are getting banned in Europe, they can cause the death of many children and they make noise pollution people want to sleep at night. Diesel cars need bigger engines because they don't have enough power compared to the petrol. Recently petrol cars have become more effeceint and do not require a turbo attachment to provide the power a car needs. In the UK we have 1.6 litre petrol MPV and SUV is plenty for everyday use. if you think it's not enough you can get a turbo model. the 2.0 is more then enough if you want power just add turbos. This is the issue with Asian countries they want big engines for no reason, kill the air quality and kill it's people. You can get a small 1.5 petrol engine with 200 HP these days. Blame Toyota for not giving you the international model and just dumbing Asian with the polluting inefficient trash.
@KonWaiLuen6 жыл бұрын
A 1.5-litre with 200hp will definitely need turbocharging, and you'll still get high fuel consumption from a petrol engine tasked to pull a heavy vehicle. The diesel engine's biggest advantage is low end torque, which allows you to pull the vehicle's heavy weight without needing to exert too much effort.
