I understand the market for Proton, the resale value for proton will drop more than 20% if im not mistake. Your bonus question it is really interesting. Im prefer Brand New Car (factory smell is important and Warranty from the factory). Even thow the market value will drop more than 20%. Im not prefer Pre Reg/Demo Car althought the company say it has warranty, but the car they had use it before. I like the way youre making videos because youre Remind and Telling. Anyway thanks for the video. All the best.

Proton still has 2014, 2015, 2016 'new' cars at their stockyard, and giving heavy discount to potential buyers. Used cars dealers may have to factor in this and to have a marginal price cut from these cars, otherwise people will by 'new' cars than a used unit. Also, financial institution no doubt had removed once higher interest rates for national cars, somehow they still need to work out the similar profit margin for their investors, they will need some quota in place for loan facilities for this group of buyers, while allocating loan to high yield sector. These also directly affect potential used car buyers to get a loan easily. Be a smart consumers, buy car only if you can afford it cash or only take 50% loan on the car. If cant afford, stick to the current car. Except Sales, if the car is just a 9-5 tool for your work. Taking Grab/Uber/LRT is still much cheaper than average car monthly installment. No roadtax, no maintenance, no petrol. no insurance required.
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
Used car dealers themselves are feeling the heat too and they face the pressure of taking in stocks that rapidly lose value by the day.
@zahemi9146 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you.. I wish i watched yr video earlier. After owning a persona for 7 mnths, i wish i could sell it today, but again, like u said, rugi banyak... No complaints on the things u mentioned, just, it consumes petrol rather fast.... Giving the car is just for daily commute to work, rather buy pucanto or axia.
@xiper867 жыл бұрын
buying second hand car does make sense, the first owner definitely suffers the biggest depreciation. That is ofcuz if you are prepared with some spare money for some maintenance, and also make a thorough checking on the car condition before buying it. Buying a 1-2 year old car means you will still enjoy the factory warranty (if it is still intact).
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
Sparing money for some initial repairs is a given.
@diongdavid19267 жыл бұрын
Personal opinion, if i had to go for a new car, i would look for one that has a nice, steep discount. Yes it may be a car that has been sitting in the stockyard for a year or two, and yes, its an old model usually. But then again, you get the full warranty regime for the price of a pre-owned car. That said, pre-owned cars are also one alot of people should look at. During my uni days back in 2011, i got a 2009 Matrix for 45k, with just 9k miles on the clock from Sime Darby Hyundai, whilst theyre clearing their company fleets. A brand new one would set one back 70k list price, mind you. Despite some niggles that couldve been avoided, the car still runs like the day i got it. Totally no regrets, saving easily 30% off the list. As for used cars, without a doubt they can be a problem pit for the uninitiated, but, if done properly, one can score a bargain. And at the same time they should have a trusty mechanic who would know how to keep the car in tip-top condition without screwing up their bank accounts. That's what i did when i bought another cold-door car. Major parts, serviced outside at reputable third party workshops to avoid crazy part costs at official service centres, which is where i would still send my car for regular services. And like how one commentator said, if one is to buy certain Jap brands, buy them new. As a used one fetches ridiculous prices, to which makes me wonder, who in the right mind is foolish enough to part top dollar for a used Japanese B-segment thats easily 3 years old, when they could just get say, a Persona like Kon's, for almost the same price, box fresh, and with a full warranty as well? Does boggle me sometimes, but then again, there are takers for such things.
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
Well-considered opinion. Pre-owned channels like BMW Premium Selection, Mazda Anshin, Perodua POV are fertile hunting grounds for good low mileage bargains.
@diongdavid19267 жыл бұрын
Kon Wai Luen yes the ones you mention are good ones, but somewhat i feel at times, the prices on offer does not match the age of the car. Like, i saw some cars, used for about a year, only dropped like 10-20% max at most. Definitely not a value buy. Such is the example of some Civic FCs i saw on Mudah. A 1.5TC, the non premium, being sold for 110k, whereas brand new would be about 127k, and its less than a year old? I would literally tell that seller to chop it to 95k, give or take and its done deal. 110k, i would rather get a box fresh Civic 1.8S, and enjoy the new car smell, simply because the savings arent justified. As for BMW Premium Selection, a pre reg car would usually be 10% off list price, with a running plate, and 1000kms (used by BPS staff), but the age of the car depends.
@dannyleogy7 жыл бұрын
I was close to getting a persona premium this year. And then beofre i placed the order for the persona, i browsed carlist for a similarly priced used car. Factoring in depreciation that i might incur for using the car for 5-7 years i ended up buying a 2014 Honda City E spec for the same price as a new persona
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
How are you liking the car?
@dannyleogy7 жыл бұрын
Its good for the price (comfort, nvh) but it lacks the handaling chacatistcs of the persona. I need to add two bars to make the car more planted for high speed crusing. Maintenance wise it needs to be sent in every 5k (i only found this out after purchasing the car) so the persona would be better in this aspect as proton is offering free mantiance up to 100k kms
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
Good handling still matters to me, which is why I wasn't 100 percent keen on a Japanese B-segment sedan. I missed out on the free maintenance package though, bought the car at the wrong time. That being said, the City is perhaps the best-rounded B-segment car in the market. Question though, since you're already buying used, why not the top spec City?

This is the current market scenario not exclusive to Proton. Imagine you are a second hand car dealer. Your cars cant move, your lot is full. A car that's supposed to be RM55k in used aelling price was coming to you for a trade in. Instead of taking it in at rm45k, you already have trouble selling your current cars. So you lowball the seller thinking (if you're stupid you sell to me lo, i dont mind you walk off) and then say "RM30k". At that moment, if the owner agrees, he himself dropped his car's value. If he walks off and uploads it onto Carlist himself, it would still be RM55k.

Bobby Ang yes bobby. I like ur comments. I follow ur channel ever since seing u review cars in Malaysia and also ur toughts about “buying a semi-D or a bentley?” in a forum by autobuzz. Well talking back on this topic, in Malaysia looks like there no standards of selling price set by an authority for a pre-owned cars. Everyone jz based on carlist or mudah to set their selling value of the cars. In addition, there is tons of used car in tge market with a low price and may affect the new cars in the market. Anyway, i still like bobby’s idea of concept owning a car. Treat is like using a shoes, it gives u comfort and takes u every where u wanna go.

Actually no one has better knowledge than the marketplace - or the creators of the marketplace themselves. Banks and insurance companies actually appoint agencies to provide them with book values. Guess where the prices came from? By aggregating Carlist and Mudah prices. I remember when i was planning asean car of the year with a depreciation scoring, i asked insurance companies and bankers where they got their data - they say "Carlist, Motortrader and Mudah lo" then i ask "you hire agencies right? they employ a bunch of people to aggregate and find a median value?" then they say yes. Then i told them "do you know that if you create an account with carlist as a car dealer, you can have all these data immediately when you wanna list a car?" they go "........ **wide eyed mouth gaping** LOL

Just for sharing. My family starting from my dad has never bought a new car (6 till today), with one of the reasons being that the initial 5 year depreciation is a hard pill to swallow. Nonetheless when discussing with people around me that bought new vehicles, I noticed most came down to 2 main reasons for buying new, 1. They didn't have sufficient cash (to buy fully cash or as a deposit), 2. Very concerned about getting a faulty used car with loads of future repairs

The Persona is still a decent car, so you definitely can consider a 1-year old used unit, and its way below RM60k at that. A few interesting choices here: www.carlist.my/used-cars-for-sale/malaysia?body_type=Sedan&max_price=60000&min_price=50000 Your choices start from 1-year Honda Citys to 9-year old Toyota Camrys. i think after your reasoning, it makes sense to buy second hand car... 2-3 year old car usually are still in good condition at a cheaper price,but it also depend on your preferences on why you would own a car regardless it is cheap or expansive to own or maintain. Some people wanna buy new car just because they have some deep sentimental value on the purchasing itself.. whether it is for their parents, or a symbol of hard-work or etc,with these in mind, the thought of depreciation of the car value definitely wont cross their mind,a question back to you is,.would you sell your trusty old Waja having this in mind let say 7 years ago after having the waja after 3 years of ownership?

Interesting question. Would have been easier to sell it back then as value was better and the car had accumulated less sentimental value at the time. Also, couldn't think of what to upgrade to then that tickled my fancy and within my budget.

Hi Kon, so since the resell value is dropping so fast, is it better to get a used car or recond car? For example 80k vios j spec and 80k recond 2013 wish, is it better to choose the wish? And is it better abit to go for recond car rather than used car?
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
With a recon car, I think you get the depreciation of a new car but the wear and tear of a used car. Recon is a good path to go if you're looking for specific models not officially available in the country, but bear in mind that these will be cars with questionable histories and some of them not properly acclimatized to our driving conditions. That being said, the Wish is as safe a bet as recon cars get.
@limdavid82877 жыл бұрын
To me, it's worth to consider a second hand car with the age of below 3 years as current New cars are mostly under warranty within 5 years. However, the interest rate of getting a used car from the bank would be higher and that should be taken into consideration.

If I may add to Kon's comments. There are a few caveats which I think have been grossly overlooked. 1) If you were to pick up a one-year old car, the price would hv depreciated but your loan rates would have gone up! Yes, you might save but it won't be much on a monthly basis n you'd be taking a gamble on the history of the car. Massive floods recent yrs anyone? 2) prices on Mudah or Carlist.my AREN'T OTR.. They exclude the comms or reg. fees and insurance while your RM60k Persona price tag is all in plus free service for labour/parts.. 3) most ppl don't buy cars cash.. No point discussing on sticker prices but rather, look at the monthly commitments. How far does RM30/mth take you? Perhaps a month of fuel or toll fares but square it against the risk of getting a lemon or questionable history? Penny wise pound foolish or in this case, Sen wise Ringgit foolish. Lastly, if someone decides to sell the car after a yr, don't you think it could just be a lemon? We don't have lemon laws in Malaysia so what's the alternative for these owners to rid off the cars?
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
Fair and well-considered points, sir. There are many reasons people would sell off their cars within a year, could be a lemon, could be the chap got a job offer overseas, short of money, flood et al. Buying a used car is always a case-by-case basis with much homework involved including paying the services of a trusted mechanic to thoroughly inspect it, which is perhaps why many would opt for a new car to avoid all this hassle. Sadly though, my Persona didn't include the free service package.

Nowadays cars come standard with long warranty. Nissan even 7 years. Proton 5 years. Some even give free service labour and parts with long period,like mitsubishi 2 years and again proton 5 years. So under 3 year old car really a good bargain. 20k RV drop is normal to ALL brand in the first few years. I just got offered a BRV full spec with 5000km mileage for rm70k. Used car want to take it at rm62k. That is RM22K off for a matter of MONTHS for a rm92k car! A Serena is rm90k market price for 2015 car. That is rm50k RV drop for 2 years car! The key is dont be picky and buy the 'less hot' car. After all, only you perasan your car established your standard. My left and right neighbours use ferrari and porsche with like 5 other luxury cars, who do I want to impress with a Type R? Not my family for sure,they value people loader much much more. If i need bigger car for any occassion, it is more value for money if i just rent 2 or 3 vellfires for a few days in a year. Why maintain one if i only need it just few times a year like balik kampung?

Hi Kon, That's was my dilemma before this whether to buy a new car or a used car(2 to 3 years). Currently I'm driving a 23 years old Proton Wira. But right now, I'm thinking of either to buy the new 2018 Myvi or Persona and again that strike my mind after I watch this video that you said it depreciated 20k in a year. Of course, other car brand will depreciate as well. I'm back in dilemma now, should I buy a new car or a used car ?

It depends on how long do you plan to use the car. If you're using it even half as long as your current 23-year-old Wira, then can definitely go for a new car.

I'd rather get a pre-owned car which I have been for the last 8 years. The depreciation rate curve from new is something too hard for me to digest and unless the said used car is a high miler (more than say, 30k km per annum), the maintenance cost still far outweighs the depreciation versus interest accrued

poor bobby i already hv that thought 18 years ago which why i save my money and buy good secondhand car cash. no need to think about rv or monthly installments
@tokmoh20007 жыл бұрын
If buy car just saja2 wanna sell back 2, 3 years later, better don't buy at all. Put in FD with ciput interest also better than that. RV won't matter if wanna use the car long term, at least 7 years. By that time, no RV also tak sakit, cuz u used the car a lot, it's fair. Btw, any car nearing 10 years won't have good RV as harder to get loan, only cash or personal loan (expensive interest). Civic FD 2006/2007 now can get about rm30k++, far cry than brand new rm110k++ price back then. Still a great car even by today's standard, for less than new Persona (but cash only lel). That's why wanna buy new car, think properly u wanna hold the car long or not. If short, better just buy used car, let someone else absorb depreciation for you. 2, 3 years old still new enough, but much cheaper price.

Already aware of rhe depreciation of new cars. The day it goes out the showroom, it has already depreciated in value compared to its purchase price. I would rather go for a 1 or 2 year old car, provided I can be certain that the car is in absolute tip top condition.

@syazzysaliman78877 жыл бұрын
to answer your question, i would rather buy the pre-registered car / showroom car. lower price, the newness feel is guaranteed still, warranty reset, interest is lower just like new car. a good used car after 1/2 year shows drop in price but if we factor in interest cost is a little bit less than new. maybe less than 5k...
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
Good thinking. Yes, don't forget that used cars entail higher interest when financed.

Resale value is highly influenced by the market demand. If the demand is high, the resale value is high, and of course brand perception affects your demand. This is why Myvi commands much higher resale value than any Proton, due to major differences in market demand. Apple iPhones generally has better resale value than Android top end smartphones, for the same reason. This is why for me, I think Proton is an expensive car relative to Perodua. Toyota and Honda is relatively cheap car relative to Mazda, Ford and Hyundai car despite similar price tag. The reason is resale value and maintenance (less popular cars generally got more expensive parts due to lack of economies of scale). Conclusion is, dont think of Proton as a cheap car despite the brand perception being low. It is an expensive car to own relatively speaking.

My opinion is if you're going to buy a car just for its resale value you are in a delusion, buy a car for your objective criteria your needs, an economy budget car with warranty that gives you that extra "peace" of mind.probably. But for more expensive cars eg sport that is not your daily driver second hand car is a good choice.
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I should have made this point clearer in my video, but didn't. Resale value is a point of consideration for motorists buying cars on financing. New cars inevitably lose 20-30% of their value in the first year. If you're planning to keep the car for long, that's not an issue; but you do need to keep in mind how long you plan to keep the car and pace your repayment tenure accordingly.

What you mention about the 1st year high depreciation cost is true. However in reality, its not so simple. Many cars which is sold after just 1 year ownership, can be lemon unit. There is some problem with the car which the owners is highly unsatisfied of, thereby selling it early. You would have 1 year less warranty coverage on that car, and risking getting a lemon unit. So later on the repair cost would have caught up depending on the age of the car and the condition. Usually its rare to find good 1 year old car. Its at least 2-3 years old before they are sold. Unless its a rich man toy, who play for 1 year already, got bored want to find new toy, normal people are unlikely to buy a car and sell it after 1 year without a valid reason (ie, the car is lemon, or they strike lottery and wanna insta upgrade to SL63 AMG, or they are extra dumb ass people losing big money selling a good car after just a year). Chances are slim. And if you buy a 2-3 year old or older car, warranty is running out and repair cost is creeping up. Financially wise, its best to just buy a popular car and sell it off 3-4 years later while the value is still high. Just my 2 cents opinion.
@KonWaiLuen7 жыл бұрын
Valid opinion. Bottom line is, when buying used, your homework is extremely important. The car needs to be thoroughly checked, and prepare a sum of money for restorative works.
