I bought an open box 2020 27 inch imac 6 months ago.. The 5k is beautiful. I just do basic home things and cant see how any new mac could do anything better as i just surf and other basic things and my 40 Gb ram upgrade. It never even uses more than 16 or 17 Gb of ram so no swap files. Such a beautiful unit. Going to a new imac would be a step down. Same with a mini. I have a 4k 38 inch LG ultrawide hooked to my thinkpad. Great clear text etc but the 5k 27 spoils a person.

I love how everyone is saying how affordable it is, and how everyone is emphasizing the 599. Who needs a desktop computer with 256gb of storage? I need at least 1tb which almost doubles the price. And it’s still not much. My desktop computer I bought in 2015 has 5tb of storage and I‘d find it hard to get along with a fifth of that.

@ Just an inexpensive 24” 1080p monitor. I have a couple of Phillips monitors that were less than $100 a few months ago. I use them as external displays for my Windows laptop. Several people have expressed concerns about fuzzy/blurry text with Macs on some monitors. I have searched , but can’t seem to find anyone using basic monitors for these. A $599 computer doesn’t justify spending $1,000 on a monitor. If that is necessary, an iMac would be a better option.

It's ridiculous, as I have a very high end Dell Ultrasharp monitor. Apple just being Apple, not giving this option for 1440p users.

Was looking for better text as well. I can't speak for 24" monitors but I bought a £99 (uk) 27" MSI MAG 275F gaming monitor (new) and generally looks better than my old imac despite less res. No scaling issues that I've noticed The msi is 180hz refresh rate IPS FHD, 0.5ms response time, 1xdisplayport 1.4, 2x hdmi 2.0b, adaptive sync, 1920x1080p fhd. It exceeds my expectations- and brightness at max is too bright for me if anything. The text is a little bit scratchy though. I don't know of a ultra budget monitor that isn't. That's the trade off but it's do-able for me, for now. The rtings website has a couple of recommendations for budget monitors if you want to step it up in price. Possible that text is better on those but idk. But yeah, if anyone knows of budget 1080p or 1440p monitors that have a higher hz, that display text really well, leave a comment? Ty

I had wireless apple keyboard and mouse and had to use the charger cable initially to connect to my Mac mini. Once connected,I could then unplug the cables and both work fine wirelessly. That may have been because keyboard and mouse had been paired with my MacBook Pro before trying to pair with the Mac mini. so for me, it was not just third party keyboard and mouse that needed to be cabled at setup.

I can tell you a MacMini 2009 can do 4K video edits in FCP, but you don't want 4K for various reasons, so basically any mac can do 1080p video edits.

was still using a Late 2012 Mac Mini with 16/512 (I upgraded to an SSD) up until last week. We'll see if this base M4 Mac Mini seems much more powerful for just day-to-day tasks (browsing the web, office apps etc). on my 2012 mini, I could have 5 browser windows open with 10-15 tabs each (I know....) and it was a stable as ever.

Not even striped dual SSD's? The beauty of the 2012 was the ability to install 2 SSDs in raid 0. It really pushes the speed. The only slow thing about it is the HD4000, so no 3D gaming on that machine.

@@CallMeKJOS I switched back to Windows about 3 years ago when I got tired of my macbook's battery wahala plus it was already running too slow. Asides from the cost factor, the sudden increase in OS update size made me quit. At the time of quitting, the size of an update was around 12 whooping gigabytes...and to make matters worse it wasn't a major OS update sef. Just regular OS security update and what have you. To now further complicate matters, they stopped uploading DMGs of these updates 🤦🏾‍♂🤦🏾‍♂. I loved using this method to update my system back then because automatic updates could suddenly fail leading to wasted internet data. Summary: their platform got too rich for my blood 😂😂

@ maybe you can answer this. I'm debating buying the M4 maxed out which is like $1500 or the M4 pro which is roughly $2200 the way I spec it. For more serious video editing do you think it's worth spending 5 to 700 more dollars to get the extra CPU cores and M4 Pro chip? $700 isn't that big of a deal to me and I would rather have more power than less for future proofing but if you think the M4 with 24 gigs of RAM is more than enough let me know your opinion.
