Twenty years ago, I spent one year in São Paulo, Brazil. As I settled there, I made myself a gift: a brand new and powerful Technics Hi-fi system. That's also the time when I fell in love with Kool & the Gang in general, and with this very song in particular. This is without any doubt the Kool & the Gang song I listened to the biggest number of times in my life. At home, I could hear it over and over and over and over again. And now, twenty years later... I still love it. :-)

Two things. The song and the Hi-fi.Having one was all the rage.Technics,Aiwa,Kenwood,Sansui,Akai...Such a wonderful generation. And of course Kool and the Gang with their masterful instrumentation blasting out of it all!!!!!!

I worked several Kool & The Gang shows at a small theater back in the 80’s. This song brings out several of fondest and the funniest memories I have. During the show was my down time and I could actually watch the act. Kool & the Gang started playing this song, the crowd was pretty lame. 2 of my then teenage friends (both males and not in the best physical shape) stood on their seats, took off their shirts and started dancing. I’ll give the band credit, they kept the song going, they barely kept it together though. JT was encouraging them, the band was visibly laughing and on the verge of losing it. You could tell neither the friends or the band were mocking each other. They all were all just having some good fun. It worked because a dead crowd got off their asses. Shortly afterwards the local cops took my friends out from the seating area. JT noticed this and well for a guy that came across as happy go lucky…he remarked on the mic that he was none too pleased in between songs w/ the treatment of my friends by the cops. The look on the band’s face concurred with JT. For a moment it was a holy shit is this really happening, is the band going to walk off?? Being professionals they were stayed and eventually got the feel good vibe back going to the show. The cops brought the 2 to right by where I was standing, right as JT was ripping them. The cops were in a no win situation at that moment. My friends knew they weren’t going to get into any more trouble. One of the cops (a certified idiot, because I knew all the cops in my small town because my father was a firefighter there and yeah he was an idiot) asked them the dumbest question… “How much have you 2 been drinking?”. The 2 looked at each other and 1 replied “Apparently not enough” they both shrugged their shoulders and both just bolted. The band from their vantage point, couldn’t hear the conversation however they could see it. JT said loudly into the mic “Don’t you dare chase them!!”. Nobody in the crowd knew what he meant, the cop’s definitely did. For the rest of the summer one of the best cat and mouse games I’ve ever seen (and yes was part of a few escapes) ensued. That cop that asked the question tried to catch those 2 for “minor in possession” and never did. Fast forward to my high school graduation that took place in that theater. We were seated by height. I wasn’t the tallest and I wasn’t the shortest in my graduating class, but damn it another friend of mine knew the exact seats where the 2 were when they started having fun. As a sign of solidarity to other 2 friends that couldn’t occupy them because of their height and well because one went to a private school. Call it fate or luck or whatever, because right before were about to do the graduation march into the place, as were lined up, standing right next us was the cop that asked the dumb question. My friend said to him to make sure to notice where we were sitting, I chimed in “Yep right where ___ and ___ sat” and then winked. It was just quiet enough that our most our class 125 students heard it and started laughing. It was perfect because the friend that sat next to me’s father was also a firefighter. The cop wasn’t going to come after us in retaliation because yes this is bad, we played the “my Daddy is a” card and he would have lost. Simply because every other firefighter that had a kid would have wondered if their kid would be targeted by this dumbass for something inconsequential. Sorry to be long and to spin this back to the band. After the show, my job allowed me to go back stage. I went back there and Dennis Thomas I believe the sax player was absolutely ripping into one of the cops (to be fair that cop had nothing to do with any of it)I’m talking he had to held back, not “Hold me back” F you, Fing arrest me then, I don’t give a crap type of rants that to this day George Brett pine tar bat kind of anger that I have not seen. So for me, this song is both a party song and a protest song.
