I’m 16 now and I go to votech for automotive and I see many people in my class who are just there to get out of other classes, I felt the same way at first and I wanted to drop out but he moved me to a more advanced automotive class, I now work in a shop and do work on the side at my home shop, I do trans swaps, diag work and everything

In the early 70s I was one of the first girls allowed to take shop. I nicked my finger on the band saw and walked to the shop teachers desk to ask for a band aid. I'd been hurt worse helping my Dad in the garage. He looked at my finger and fainted. A couple of the boys in the class helped him to his desk chair and he was ok but he never let me near the machines again with out him standing right next to me. Whenever I saw him in the halls afterward he would ask if I still had all my fingers and I would hold them up and say yes sir Mr Johnson. Our HS still has a shop class and I made both my sons take it.

Clay, this is one of the more enjoyable videos I've watched from you (I do love them all!). The part discussing the simple repair tasks was dead-on accurate! As a 52 year old, I learned at a young age how to safely install house light switches and receptacles, how to disassemble a lawn mower, how to sweat pipe and even how to light a heating broiler (thay wasn't a big deal, though). Your chat brings back old and wonderful memories of working with my dad and my grandfather (God bless their souls). Thank you for a nice stroll down history lane this Saturday morning!

My first car was my dream car a 1979 Trams Am special edition, "Bandit". My father when he gave me the keys told me that he bought the car but all the repairs and maintenance were up to me. I had grown up learning how to work on all kinds of things, woodworking, fixing lawnmowers, even working on tractors and cars. Now, this was before Google and KZbin so I had to get a book to show me what I didn't know. This was my introduction to Haynes and Chilton's manuals. I knew every nut and bolt on that car. One of the first things I do now is to buy a service manual for every new car or truck that I purchase. Now I also had learned from my Grandparents, Uncles, Father, and my mentor Mr. Leo Thomas. They all showed me how to work on different things and how to think when it came to solving a problem. They didn't just do it for me they taught me to do it then expected me to expand on that knowledge.

I love the power probe piercers. I'm a marine mechanic, so sometimes I have to test a circuit with a momentary switch and just being able to listen for the beep has saved me so much time. We don't really have the luxury of Deutsch connectors or anything. Just 2 wires butt connected and heat shrunk. But always silicone or liquid electrical tape.

I just retired after a 33 year career as a high school and middle school shop teacher. In 2008, I was cutting a drawer bottom (1/4” ply) on the Unisaw, had a kickback, and it drove my right hand ring finger into the saw blade. It cut my finger vertically, splitting the finger from the tip to the cuticle of the finger nail. During class. Took 5 stitches. Within 3 years, I had replaced both Unisaws with SawStops. That technology is fantastic! And kids “working,” or learning how to do things, is alive and well in the Midwest and the Great Plains, too!
@KoonTrucking3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s a great invention for sure
@scott17083 жыл бұрын
@@KoonTrucking I agree it was a great invention, but if you cut wet pressure treated decking you can get a false positive and unnecessarily destroy a blade. It happens often out in the feild. The guy who invented it did two things I didn't like. 1) He went to the government and attempted to mandate all saws in the US use the technology--a technology free had a monopoly on. 2) Enter Bosch ReaXX, a system with the same technology but at a far lower cartridge cost. Moreover it does not destroy your blade. The guy fought their US release to protect his patent (who cares about safety? 😂) even though some legal experts said it didn't violate his patent. Thankfully his patent just expired and Bosch's far superior system will soon be widely available in the United States.

The saw stop works exactly the same way a touch lamp like grandma had works. The way your skin turns on the lamp from touch, activates the detonator (just like an airbag in a car) to jam the sawblade in milliseconds. The newer saw stops dont ruin the saw, they just have a replaceable module and blade if activated. No matter what it costs, what are your fingers worth? I wish that id had a matco dealer like Michael. Id have bought more stuff from them over the years. EVERY shop I was at, the matco guy would show up once every 10 weeks and randomly skip that visit when you needed him most.

A lot of them and I know not all but a lot believe that tradesmen are low on the economy and intellectual spectrum but as an industrial electrical tech I’m making more than 90% of these kids that are 100k in the hole after a 2 4 and 6 year degree. And y’all are right a lot of us have failed as parents to prepare our kids for the real world.

FYI the building codes in Chicago requires light switches to be serviced by electricians. Even though this is excessive, it prevents a lot of people from even realizing in the first place that they are capable of DIY home repairs. Some other examples of strict city codes preventing homeowners from DIY'ing: toilets, sinks, P-traps, light fixtures, electrical conduit, light switches - these are all things that Chicago code requires a licensed professional to repair. Many home owners don't care about these codes and do their own repairs (ahem), but it's worth mentioning.

Micheal is one hell of a salesman. He’s sold me on a ton of things right along with you Clay. Sure wish I could buy from him. Hell I might drive to Mississippi to meet up with him like I did Mr joe. My guys ok but he don’t have the passion like Micheal does and don’t think he’s gonna last long to be honest. Matco seems to be pushing things more towards online ordering, than the tool trucks. My guy has even told me to order online vs going through him because of back ordering. Thing is he won’t warranty anything unless I get it from him.
@KoonTrucking3 жыл бұрын
That’s some bull if it is “Matco” he should warranty it. I wouldn’t buy jack squat from him if that’s how he wants to be. What if you buy everything from him and he goes out of business and the next guy is the same way? Piss on that. I would tell him to his face too if he refused to warranty something for me especially since Matco covers the cost of the tool to take his truck and run it off a bridge! I would just walk off the truck and tell him to save a trip and never come back.

Society and technology have advanced so much that one person cant do it all anymore. People used to build their own homes, grow their own food, fix their own cars, and everything else that goes with homesteading. Yeah they may not be able to change your battery or change oil, But they can write code or build computers, engineer things etc. Things that they consider basic tasks we may be as clueless as they are with cars.
