What If Humans Lived Underwater?

Hundreds of years in the future, the surface of the Earth has become unlivable. Vacating our terrestrial settlements, our species migrates into the ocean and begins a new chapter underwater. Could humans build neighborhoods and cityscapes on the ocean floor? Could our species colonize the ocean with bio-domes and giant air bubbles? If the surface of our planet can no longer sustain us, will humans ever live underwater?

Great video, but the initial reasoning of why such an endeavour would be needed is flawed. Even if the atmosphere is toxic for humans on the surface , it’s much easier creating habitats that are air tight protecting you from the elements on the surface. Dealing with challenges of creating underwater colony adds so much more unnecessary complexity, such as water pressure and much more

Doesn't the pressure come from the water itself upon the body? So, we are able to go down in a submarine and not be crushed to death (and likewise to not hallucinate). It would be the same living there.
@rezs-tech
@rezs-tech 2 жыл бұрын
that's what I was wondering. They were showing a home deep in space. If the habitats are airtight and pressurized normally, then we wouldn't have to worry about the bends until we go swimming...

@scientchahming5 2 жыл бұрын
The main key would be to not live too far down.
@terricon4
@terricon4 2 жыл бұрын
There's a few reasons, but one of the simpler ones is if you ever go in/out of something it's a problem. Second though is if you build something super far down, then the less pressure inside the harder it is to sustain its shape, so even small increases in pressure inside can considerably lower the weight and materials needed to make something safely operate at depth. Something fun to think about is even modern nuclear submarines, capable of going down to considerable depths, actually get deformed when they dive. If you hang a string across an open section of the ship, when on the surface so it's tought and tight, as you dive it will start to hang and sag because the submarine is being squished and crushed. It's at a level it can survive happening for the ship, but that already, without a lot of extra careful systems for managing atmospheric pressure inside the submarine on the fly, means you're air pressure is going up a bit. Making a submarine so rigid that doesn't happen is again just prohibitively expensive in resources to build and the final weight of the vehicle.
@qwerasdliop2810

@@rezs-tech maybe the pressure inside will be the same as the pressure outside to make the construction possible. Otherwise the enormous weight of the water would probably crush the whole thing

What a fascinating video on a topic I know next to nothing about. I've read so much about space stations, Dyson spheres, generational ships, that I know all the scifi tropes about them and the engineering challenges in building them. Using technology already available for building oil-drilling operations in places like the North Sea, it might be possible to build floating "iceberg cities" with 90 percent of their volume underwater. Building cities on the ocean bottom will probably always be impossible, though automated mining of the seabed is a virtual certainty since it's already known that chemical processes have concentrated a number of useful elements into what amounts to nuggets.

As this video has convinced me, humans do best living on the surface of the ocean. A large amount of Styrofoam is floated so as to cover the sea inside the harbor, and a relatively lightweight building is installed there. This will at least keep prices down in dense cities. However, the covered sea completely blocks sunlight and completely destroys the environment for marine life.

If you're not actually exposed directly to the water pressure, you don't experience any of the problems this video talks about regarding air pressure. It's why submarine sailors don't need to decompress. If you want to go outside the underwater dome to go swimming etc, you'd need to compress / decompress, but other than that you can build as deep as you like and as long as the atmosphere is at 1 bar, then no problems to come and go as you want...

If you can build cities in domes to keep out water, you could build domed cities on land that keep out toxic air, but easier & cheaper

Raise your hand if you've been here since before Koranos blew up. And I say that fully knowing that they will blow up. I mean, how can they not? This is absolutely stellar.

I think the biggest question to surviving underwater, on our planet, with oceanic acidification would be: How viable would our fortifications be in a world where most of the sea life died because of what happened to the surface?
