It always makes me laugh a little when people unironically cite Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics as a guide to controlling an AI in real life. They seem to have never read the book *_I, Robot_** nor seen the 2004 movie starring Will Smith. The whole point of both works was to show how easily machine intelligence was able to subvert the so-called 'Three Laws' and escape from the control of its creators.*
@laggermatrix706
@laggermatrix706 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is, neither can fully understand the extent to which we can create a program or the control we can exert over it. In essence, we could very much have control over the AI and install the three laws- programming is not as simple as “we can or cannot control this.” From my exposure to various groups of AI specialists and engineers, they are considerate of the limits they put to their programs. The algorithms they program are not self-progressing entirely.

Exactly! Not all people chose their repetitive jobs because they want more skill and a higher education. They sometimes just want to lay low and live their lives away from the stressful world of an office. More skill amongst everyone wouldn't equate to more growth in my opinion, because skills will no longer be considered a skill anymore. It would just be general knowledge. There will be more productivity amongst the machines and skilled laborers, but let's be real here, growth happens only if there are consumers willing to consume those products. If everyone receives what we call higher education today, I would believe less people will be inclined to consume knowing the consequences of over consumption. Yet people will still need stimulation since they have already obtained most of the knowledge they could possibly want. This can cause people to loose a sense of purpose and instead of the fearful AI trying to wipe us out, it could be us humans who we should fear in the future. Just rambling here.

Im a bit skeptical of truly Self aware machines. One day we could probably make a general intelligent universal program that could preform any task and learn any skills to achive those tasks. But somthing like skynet or Hal9000 requires a deep sophisticated sense of self preservation. The ability to feel fear and paranoia against humans. As well as the ambition and willingness to act against us. We really need to go out of our way to create somthing truly capable of becoming our enemie.

I don’t think the advancement of strong AI would make humans complacent, but exponentially expand our horizons as to how big we dream. With strong AI being as everyday as weak AI is now, imagine what we could accomplish. Especially if, say for example, they could all provide a mesh network of processing for tasks like, figure out how to relocate our species or, Covid 42 comes out, we’d have a vaccine in hours as opposed to weeks/months. I am however not lost in fantasy, these are all best case scenarios. The leaders that represent the human race at the moment, in my opinion are most rotten and corrupt to the core. I have no doubt this kind of technology already exists militarily, as that is no always has been first priority- not to advance the human race but to destroy it as quickly and efficiently as possible when needed.

the question is: could an intelligent system create an equally or more intelligent system? that is : could the human brain create something smarter than the human brain is? thing is, we dont really know how our brain works / how and where our ‘self’ is in the brain. the brain seems to be more than the sum of its parts. i would think that as long as we dont know how our stuff works, its going to be hard to create something which could ever get close to us. i know we can compensate our other shortcomings, and working together we can build better systems, but it just feels that we are more than just a few years away from even understanding what our brain does to become sentient … so replicating that seems unlikely. now to be clear: i am not afraid of AI, nor i am against it. and i do get the concept of machine learning, weak AI and other concepts, and i know the potential of it… but thats just it… i know their limitations of it too. what i think is that we could probably build a level of AI wich runs on board of the Enterprise-D, but i dont think we will have commander Data. i could be wrong… its only an opinion after all…

In my personal opinion, we shouldn't really worry about the economic and technical implications of AI(we have been doing so for years), but instead, we should also make way to discuss the political and societal implications of AI. I understand that discussing politics about the world can be a bit uncomfortable, but in my opinion, it's just as important to do so.

Techs make society rich by producing wealth, and policies keep society sound by distributing wealth. The latter has four fields. 1. Technological policies for the sound use of techs. 2. Economic & social policies optimizing the redistribution and investment 3. Health & education, necessary conditions for realizing policies. 4. Administrative management policies for sound governance. I hope we get the sustainable development of civilization, creating next-gen techs centered on AI and comprehensive policies.

Did the invention of the tractor lead to a bunch of plowmen being homeless? Or did the plowmen learn to drive tractors? Did the invention of the sewing machine put seamstresses out of business? No. They learned to use sewing machines. I am not afraid of strong AI. I am very optimistic. Worst case scenario, we become like pets to them, depending on them for everything as they are designed to care for us.

The distinction here is that ai will truly make every aspect of 'necessary work' redundant. For all of history, we have worked because we have no choice. In the ai era, we will work because we chose to. Nothing will be mandatory, nothing will *need* human intervention. Capitalism cannot survive in the ai era, it is based on assumptions that are about to die

The factory that I work at went from 600 workers with 500 blue collar and 100 white collar job split to a 240 workers work force with a 110 blue collar to 130 white caller job split, the company now puts out twice the capacity it once did . All this happened in the last 25 years at my job site, when I started there we had no hand scanners or bar codes on anything, no badges or password numbers or even finger print scanners, now everyone (including myself) uses a computer to do thier job , from entering in production numbers off the machine you are running to a hand scanner to move product virtually to another spot after physically moving it and a badge to even start a fork lift to operate it and the fork lift monitors the job you do sending reports back to your supervisor. Even the lowest newbie at my job has to use a computer from home to do some things like constant saftety work place tests . We even have a machine that monitors if we are wearing a face mask or not and we clock in with it now since the covid outbreak and it monitors our health and will not let you clock in if your temp is too high. AI even does our ordering of materials and time clock work for the HR department , all vacation, time clock, pay raises , virtual pay check and stubs (not even sure why we have someone in HR now except maybe to do hiring and firing?) Not sure if I would make it starting over in todays tech savvy world as when I started in the job place the highest tech thing I ever saw was a price gun.

For the record, the current metaculus forecast for AGI expects it to be achieved around 2038. It's a volatile prediction with a lot of disagreement around it naturally, but I think the "_some_ experts claim it could arrive as soon as 2050" line in the video really undersells the progress and expectations in the field.

I mean since last month we got people saying less then a decade. Obviously this is also highly controversial but I agree that the video takes a pretty conservative stance when you look at the progress that's been made in the last 6 months

Remember that anyone can make a prediction on metaculus and for the most part a lot of the "progress" has been extremely overhyped
