The Yellowstone volcano is unlikely to be active anytime soon. But imagine: what if it blew up tomorrow? How would the United States and the world at large be affected?

I live in Post Falls, Idaho, over a far flung part of the Yellowstone magma chamber far below. Most folks don't realize how very, very large this magma chamber is. And yeah, most of it is very deep down and, for the most part, stable (for now, anyway). And I don't really worry about Yellowstone blowing up anytime soon, or at least in my lifetime, because this is a live volcano that "breathes", in that it is regularly releasing steam/super heated water from it's magma chamber. The surface of the current caldera, which surrounds Yellowstone Lake, rises and falls on a pretty regular basis. Pressure builds and the land of the caldera basin rises, then pressure is released, and the land subsides again. It's been doing this for hundreds of thousands of years and no significant changes have been found since it's been monitored on an hourly basis.

Two problems: 1, there is a string of supervolcanic explosions following what's now the Yellowstone hotspot going back 17 million years, not mentioned in the video. 2, the Yellowstone caldera system is a whole lot larger than the comparably tiny Prismatic Spring shown in the video, which I might describe as deceptive imagery.

You see, unlike science fiction stories, in which nuclear weapons seem to be the cause of, and solution to, many geological catastrophes, science fact tells us that you aren't likely to trigger a Yellowstone cataclysm with a nuclear weapon. How do we know? It's because this experiment has already been tried. [ www.usgs.gov/observatories/yvo/news/can-a-nuclear-blast-trigger-a-yellowstone-eruption-no-how-about-earthquake#:~:text=You%20see%2C%20unlike%20science%20fiction,cataclysm%20with%20a%20nuclear%20weapon. ]

There is a possibility but you will need to drill down at least a mile and place the nukes which would be impossible to hide. There is also that the geological processes that Yellowstone undergoes every day release more energy than nuclear weapons so possible but highly unlikely

The explosion was possibly due to minerals clogging up one of the underground pipes, Poland said, where pressure built until it exploded." This is a snippet from LA times along with this "“No other monitoring data show changes in the Yellowstone region,” the park service said. “Today’s explosion does not reflect a change in the volcanic system, which remains at normal background levels of activity.”" They are still investigating to see if it's safe to reopen. If it was about to erupt earthquakes would be going on and massively within the region it sits. So currently no cause for alarm it's just what happens sometimes

Volcanoes do not work in predictable ways and their eruptions do not follow predictable schedules. Even so, the math doesn’t work out for the volcano to be “overdue” for an eruption. In terms of large explosions, Yellowstone has experienced three at 2.08, 1.3, and 0.631 million years ago. This comes out to an average of about 725,000 years between eruptions. That being the case, there is still about 100,000 years to go, but this is based on the average of just two time intervals between the eruptions, which is meaningless. [www.usgs.gov/faqs/yellowstone-overdue-eruption-when-will-yellowstone-erupt] Also please learn the difference between a kilometer and a mile.
