Stories about North Korea’s online education first emerged early 2018 when the country’s propaganda news outlets extensively promoted that form of education. In a country where educational background is an essential factor in defining one’s social class, it is a sign of change for North Korean society that an increasing number of people are earning degrees and receiving further education online.
Nowadays North Korea boosts the online education system. The tele-education system is not limited by time and place, state media reported.
"There are no age or job restrictions to receive remote education, so tele-education continues to thrive.", said Kim Nam Hyok, a tele-education system faculty member at Kim Chaek University of Technology.
In the video provided by the North's official news agency KCNA, teacher is seen standing in front of a camera to record lectures and faculty members of the University in Pyongyang having a meeting.
"It's been 3 years since I've been enrolled in tele-education university as an industry management major. The good thing about tele-education systems is it increases productivity because it combines theory and practice.", said Yang Hwa Gyong, a student using the tele-education system.
North Korea has introduced the universal 12-year compulsory education system consisting of one year of kindergarten, five years of primary school, three years of junior secondary school and three years of senior secondary school, according to state media.
