That's interesting! I remember the KZbinr "Lily petals world" had divorced her husband and he mentioned that her parents who were old Koreans were separated but living together in different rooms. I thought it was just them but now i realize it's a norm in Korea for the older generation!

I'm in my 50s and emigrated to the US with my parents when I was 5 y.o. I observed what is happening to my birth country from afar, and besides the technological advances and the appearance of advancement, it really hasn't modernized socially. So, for almost 50 years, Korea has not advanced in that area. Is it any wonder that it's the leader when it comes to the plummeting birth rate? And, it's still one of the highest ranking countries when it comes to suicides. I was shocked to see even young Korean KZbinrs obsessing over looks and their body. Again, Korea leads in plastic surgery. Strangers will make comment on your looks, ask you then judge you by what you do for work, etc. So, please don't be fooled by the look of modernization. S. Korea culture and society is absurdly antiquated.

Thank you for always sharing information but also comparing the thought process between between countries. Here in the US 16 states still recognize adultery as a crime & a reason for divorce but all other states have decriminalized adultery as a reason for divorce. Instead of an at fault reason there is no fault & considered irreconcilable differences. In many ways, with adultery taken out of the divorce equation many spouses feel as if the cheating spouse is not held accountable for their actions & that within itself can be considered painful as the reason is not truly apparent or justified. I believe adultery should still be a reason for divorce even if it is decriminalized because it is what it is.

1st all people mentally sound are responsible for their own actions. So no woman could "induce her husband" to "violence" so she could "receive a lot of property." These statements show how internalized sexism is inside of the hearts and minds of Korean women, not just Korean men. Domestic violence is a very real problem around the world, including Korea, which often treats it as a private family issue. 2nd child support is not free $$$ for women anywhere in the world, it's money to fulfill his duty to support the children he co-created. It is hypocritical for anyone in Korea to speak of child support as free money that women receive, but then point to the sky high cost of raising kids as one of the reasons for the low birth rate. 3rd No one should bring up a conversation about the division of property as unfair if a woman gets 1/2 of everything. Women in Korean society due to sexism are often expected to quite their jobs and devote themselves to caring for the family, husbands, kids, in-laws, their own parents, even siblings in some cases. Korean job markets make it almost impossible for women to return to the workforce after taking maternity leave, or years off for child care. So of course a divorced woman will need income from the former spouse. For example, in the case of someone trapped in a car on fire, that then drives into a lake and the fire is put out, that person is still trapped in a car in danger of drowning. For the women of Korea it's important to remember doing better, does not equal doing good. The fight for equality inside of the home and legally still is an uphill battle.

7:37-7:43 Yes it's not easy in your culture because someone takes half of the other person money, owns or wealth after divorce.. in my culture there is no division of assets or wealth or 50/50 or half after divorce... What the husband owns is his right and what the wife owns is her right, only if the husband and the wife enter into a joint project together like they contributed to it together and financed it together it will be 50/50 after divorce or she gets more if look at the percentage of the wife contribution and her financial participation in it and she will get the amount of the wife contribution and her financial participation in it after the divorce.. For example, in my culture, Husband and wife have the right to divorce.. the husband has no right to the wife money and what she owns only if the wife give him her money and what she owns by herself without he asking her so in my culture the husband and the wife have a separate bank account meaning the wife is Financially independent from her husband... the wife has the right to keep her family name so in my culture the husband and the wife have a separate family name.. anything the husband buys and register it on his wife name it becomes the wife owns for example, if the husband buys a car or a house or any kind of business and registers it on his wife name it becomes the wife owns even if they divorced. anything the husband buys for his wife like gold or jewelry or whatever and gives it to his wife as a gift it becomes the wife owns too. When they divorce the wife gets the divorce wife alimony which is 3 months and sometimes may reach one year and she gets the divorce dowry that agreed before the marriage

This video further proves why the marriage and birth rates in S. Korea are so low. Not only is the cost of living in S. Korea very high (esp. in Seoul), but men and women see each other as competitors and not as potential partners. Also, unless you absolutely want children, there is very little benefit to getting married, esp. for men. Divorce can absolutely devastate a man financially since courts typically favor women with regards to alimony and child support.
@realMaxEffort4 күн бұрын
The U.S. has similar divorce laws, but they vary by state. In general, men have been screwed over by the courts so much that many men see no reason to getting married. For example, in a no-fault state, a wife can have a years-long affair with another man and then decide to ask for a divorce. She can get custody of their children, get child support payments, the house, and alimony payments. The husband is left with nothing and has to start over.
@kimwilliams51653 күн бұрын
It's odd that a grown man would list child support payments as part of "men have been screwed over by the courts.'' If a man doesn't want kids or to be financially responsible for any, condoms are readily available and vasectomies are effective.
