people romanticize PGL too much. there are a lot of other brave puteris in the olden days. I really love the story of Cik Siti Wan Kembang from Kelantan. She's a brave ruler and fought while horseback riding and she's a great archer. So cool.

@@Ruriko.Y The few I have heard and read about was PGL, Mahsuri and Cik Siti Wan Kembang. The others was of male like the famous Hang Tuah. Unfortunately, with folklore also comes a lot of stuffs that weren't really allowed for muslims as it is considered syirik? For example the story of Ulek Mayang. You can barely find the origin of the whole story so sometimes I fear these story will be lost forever soon.

As I thought, the outfit for puteri gunung ledang will sparks some controversies lol. But i hope i can say this in a right manner for educational purposes. Not to start any fights. And maybe will initiate future bilmey projects and i do hope so. First of all, thanks blimey for the interest in our culture. The outfit for Puteri Gunung Ledang is based on Javanese style, from the isle of Java nowadays situated in Indonesia, which influenced by ancient kingdom called Majapahit, a kingdom that is not that really influence Malay traditional clothing. Eventhough there are many Javanese Malaysian in Malaysia, but there are strong culture dispute amongs Malaysian and Indonesian as Indonesian especially the many people from Isles of Java will not consider to be part of Malay Nation and culture eventhough in Malaysia they do. (thats a long story so i think its unnecesary to bring it here). But the point is, this outfit is a lil bit foreign for the Malay people in Malaysia, except it was popularised by the movie Puteri Gunung Ledang (Tiara Jacuelina version), where only in that version, the princess was potrayed as a princess from Java, and its clearly stated in the movie. While in the more canon version of the legend (which should be more popular but it somehow dont due to the popularity of the movie) the real Puteri Gunung Ledang probably wear different outfit than the movie potrayed. More accurately, Malay Princesses traditional dresses that has been accepted in Malaysia, are highly influenced by Melaka Kingdom/Sultanate and its legacies, plus some kingdoms that comes before Melaka Sultanate too. I wish I can show pictures here but i cant. But i do really hope that Blimey or others, even Malaysian girls themselves will consider to wear it more often. The most popular outfit (i think) for Malaysian girls are of course Baju Kurung Johor from Johor Sultanate (a direct legacy of Melaka Sultanate) and Kebaya Perlis. And of course due to popularity Puteri Perak (also direct legacy from Melaka Sultanate). Another one is from Kelantan also known as Che Siti Wan Kembang outfit (a legacy from an old Malay Kingdom called Pattani Sultanate, unfortunately the main Pattani now situated in Thailand), but because it is quite appealing for a Muslim girl to wear (and kind of fancy too lol) it will not be wearing except for certain events. But there are also other princesses outfit which vary from places to places. I will stated some of them to give an idea how different they are. Queen of Melaka outfit. (from the Melaka Sultanate itself) Princess Pahang outfit. (from the combination of Johor Pahang Riau Lingga Kingdom, Johor and Pahang nowadays in Malaysia, but Riau and Lingga in Indonesia, in those time they are the same country and culture) Minang (Negeri Sembilan) outfit. (a legacy from Minangkabau Kingdom situtated in Sumatera, Indonesia) Princess Selangor outfit (from Bugis culture in Sulawesi Island, now in Indonesia) And there are more! Including Kedah, Penang, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak (including their many subethnics) outfit which are clearly more different than the others. If i have said it correctly, there will be no culture claim and so on, because in ancient world, we share and interact more in common than we thought especially between Malay Peninsula of Malaysia and Sumatera of Indonesia) But thats a lil bit off topic. The main point is, I hope Blimey can try these too that has been accepted amongst Malaysian as Malaysian traditional princesses outfits. Also others can try it too, also Malaysian people themselves can try it more often too.

I'm not sure about the accurate legend of these two warrior princesses. There are many versions of it . Some said Puteri Gunung Ledang is a daughter of the Javanese scholar, some said she's a Javanese princess from Majapahit, and there's a folklore told that she's an elven princess. But the Puteri Perak as far as I know is a legend from the Perak state. The story of Puteri Limau Purut (Puteri Perak) is quite tragic. Once upon a time a King from Acheh wishes to wed Puteri Limau Purut. But the Sultan doesn't give immediate response or answer. In the meantime, The journey of Puteri Limau Purut in his official visit to the towns in Perak, led to her death. When the Sultan of Perak gave the news to Acheh, the king was angry and said that the Sultan was just messing around with him and intend to provoke a wars between them. Although the princess's journey was a tragic story. But she's a cause for wars. Means she's a rare princess and valuable one. The outfit of Puteri Perak is inspired from her. She's the trendsetter for official costume of Perak. It's a costume for the custom and ceremonial rites. I like the costume of Jade.. It's regal, and I love the caption for Jade, 'Jade Jelmaan Siti'. It's actually a compliment to Jade for costume of Puteri Perak is always wearing by our most honorable national songstress that is Siti Nurhaliza in her traditional performance. You really nailed the Puteri Perak of Siti' version. In ceremonial rites for the princess, the veil that Jade wearing at the back really stand for informal version. But accurately Puteri Perak wore a long songket cloth around her shoulder and sometimes she insert it between her belt and the train trails on her back shoulder.

Please correct the mindset that Johor = Javanese culture. 1st, there is no princess or queen from Johor who is Javanese. 2nd, not everyone believes Puteri Gunung Ledang is princess from Java. That myth just came across after Malaysian's independent. DO NOT TAKE TIARA JACQUELINA version of Puteri Gunung Ledang as authentic source of history. It just one of the lesser modern version created by the new "Javanese" descendant. Earlier depiction of Puteri Gunung Ledang before 1980s all have her as mystical princess. In another myths, Puteri Gunung Ledang is said to be the sister of Puteri Gunung Banang and Puteri Gunung Tahan and from all we know, Puteri Gunung Tahan is never ever being depicted as Javanese. People really need to stop this thinking that Puteri Gunung Ledang = javanese princess. And also, not all Johorean culture is Javanese culture. There is a lot of authentic Malay Johor culture out there

@@jumbeaux1 yes, but if you want to create elaborate costume there are many other puteris you can do..... ie che siti wan kembang, Hang Li Po (she wore baju kurung style dress with elaborate headdress that is Chinese styled, and chest covering) Minangkabau (Negeri Sembilan) which is more authentic. Even wearing kurung Pahang with kerudong as Tun Teja is very beautiful and depict malay softness and beauty. Then there are traditional costumes of Sabak and sarawak.
