Not really, sometimes it's not about being open. Their mental health is considerably worse than other generations, this is a proven fact. It's not because they are more open rather because of social media influences, and they also handle stress less efficiently than other generations. They also try to be adults waaaay too soon and are engrossed in being acepeted by their social groups, or the huge social media fanbase "I want to have this and be that, only then can I be truly happy".

People say they support mental health but will turn around and make judgemental comments towards others without hestistation. I like that gen z is more open about their feelings regarding mental health because yeah it should be normalized. So sad a kid died that they felt so low but those situations can be prevented. It starts with people not being judgy and being understanding. By people I mean all generations. You aren't born a bully.

I had no idea what I wanted to do so I went abroad to teach English and didn't look back. I certainly don't regret it because America has been struggling for a long time. Gen Z is just more aware and vocal about it.

As a millennial, our mental health is crap but we weren't supposed to talk about it growing up (outside of dark music that our parents often did not realize was a sign something was wrong). That's why so many of us are only coming to terms with it later on in life...and after a lifetime of masking and hiding symptoms and pretending things were fine it's really not great. I actually think it's a positive thing that Gen Z is more open about their mental health, even if it comes with the branding of the nihilism generation. Just recognizing that young people can really struggle with their mental health is a HUGE step forward.

I personally think that some of those tiktoks were a little too insensitive as I dont really participate in that wave of content anyway, but I do understand where they are coming from. I also believe that this generation will bring children into this world because they want to and are aware that they can care for them truly. Coming from a representative of Gen Z, they aren't always just jokes to be funny. Many of us do mean them and use them as a way to cope with wanting life to end and just hating our lives in general. A lot of people use humor as a way of coping with having mental health issues and being suicidal because when you laugh it releases serotonin and endorphins(brain chemicals that boost your mood). If this humor was taken away its likely the suicide rates would increase. While suicide isn't something to joke about (especially when it comes to telling others to do it) the fact the jokes are so normalized has the upside of helping people feel less alone about their issues

I feel like mental illness is more normalised among Gen z but there's a lot of romanticising of it too. The previous generations rarely talk about mental illness, so we have to deal with it ourselves and that often results in talking about it openly while not knowing how to actually cope with it. Mental illness becomes so normal that it feels safer to be mentally unhappy than happy imo. I've also learned that we are a generation that wants to change the world with actions. Previous generations do participate in politics and so on but we don't want to just participate. A lot of injustice in our world has been brought up by us.

all the jokes about suicide kinda remind me of tumblr days. everyone was also very open about their mental health but it got to the point where it was becoming extremely toxic. it wasn't helping anyone to get better because we were all just miserable. i also understand that the world is shitty and i would never want to bring another human life into it. but as someone who knows people who have actually committed suicide, there's just nothing funny about it for me. it's just tragic.
@facesncharcoal41523 жыл бұрын
I like your point about things eventually becoming toxic. It’s one thing for people to be open about dark thoughts but when so many people start to talk about those thoughts and experiences almost like a badge of honor then I think it fosters an environment where no one wants to push for improvement and no one works to fight the depression and suicidal tendencies. I understand that thsoe experiences are extremely hard and it can be encouraging to know when people are not alone, but like you pointed out, sometimes the broad spread commiserating just creates an environment where people accept their mental health and dark thoughts as a given and no longer see hope of fighting through them because no one else seems to be doing so.

tw: suicide There is definitely not just a generational (Gen Z vs. Millennial) difference but also a cultural difference with regard to the suicide jokes. I think that is because suicide rates in countries such as Korea and Japan are much higher. There's a lower level of finding those things funny because on average, the likelihood that someone you're talking to has been personally impacted by someone committing suicide is much higher. Additionally, the frequency by which someone famous in the west dies by suicide is much less than a celebrity in Korea. You get many frequent reportings of a Anthony Bourdain-level of celebrity dying by suicide or attempting suicide there, so on average, the Korean public seems to be less receptive to suicide jokes, especially because eastern humor tends lean towards slapstick versus western culture, which leans more towards satire, stylistically. This is also not to say people in the west don't suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts (addressing the frequency aspect), but also what makes it funny is the premise for western Gen Z humor is the irony and hyperbole coming from the fact that the previous generations have made the world so unlivable that Gen Z wants to willingly become extinct. Coupled with the fact that on average, people in the west (or at least in the U.S. because I don't want to overgeneralize), people tend to be more open with regard to talking openly about illnesses and neurodivergencies, it's understandable why Korean millennials have trouble getting why those jokes are funny. edited for typo

Gen Z here. Interesting to see what millenials think about the way we see and joke about things. The tiktoks I found to be 100% accurate, didn't really miss a beat, especially the jokes about suicide. Not every Gen Z person is as polite as shown in the barista/president tiktok though, but again, the constant pressure and struggles can cause us to develop anxiety to the point where even if we wanted to complain, we just decide for our own mental wellbeing that it isn't worth it. As opposed to being behind a screen where some people feel a disconnect as if another human being won't read what they wrote on Twitter. We're looked down upon by a lot of older people, yet we're the ones that keep being told we have to fix everything that those generations caused, despite at the same time rarely being given any sense of empowerment by the older generations to fix the problems they caused and expect us to fix. The tiktoks about mental health highlight a societal problem moreso than a problem with our generation, we receive so much pressure yet when we finally crack under the stress we're looked down upon by some people for "being too weak", compared and contrasted against other people (mostly other people of an older generation that didn't have to deal with the same stresses as we do), and there's not a whole lot that's available in terms of medicine or therapy that can help you as quickly as you need it to without making you feel like a useless zombie. When some of us joke about suicide, generally the people doing it are dealing with something mentally to some extent, or are going through a bad period; just in general can relate to feeling that way to some extent. 99% of us don't actually think about the implications of suicide when we joke about it, for example the impact on others around us, what it would actually look like, and so on. We're more so desensitized to the idea of suicide rather than suicide itself, and unfortunately a decent amount of us can relate to feeling like we don't want to be here to deal with the continuous stress and pressure anymore, hence suicide jokes.

I feel like most of the suicide jokes comes from a place of truth. My friend, sister and I joke about it with each other because we have all been there and made attempts or thought it deeply. 1:38pm June 30 2021

I don’t mess with the suicide jokes because it’s a serious topic for many people and may come off as triggering. Not only that but you can’t tell if someone is kidding or being truthful when they say things like that. But besides that, I would say I have broken and dark humor, like I’ll laugh if someone falls awkwardly or makes a weird face but when it comes to dark humor it usually pertains to my own experiences, for example, I practically devour the whole “ dad went to go to the grocery store for milk but never came back” genre.

I feel like they have to be done a certain way for me to laugh but even then, I feel a sense of guilt laughing at a heavy topic. As for the hand gestures, I think most of them are done ironically so i never them seriously

Personally, as Gen Z, I find the suicide jokes funny because I relate and it’s kinda like a “I’m laughing because of the pain.” I think the reason why we find dark jokes so funny is partly because it’s like us making reality lighter for ourselves by making/forcing the pain to be funny/relatable 🤷♀️

Honestly without them I would've dropped out. I probably failed my chemistry courses but because everyone was so reassuring I wasn't as bent up about it. One time I was stressed since I talking about how my friend's parent allowed them to drop out and I said that I wanted to drop out too. My mom was like hell no and didn't listen to my reasoning. What I also noticed is that most of my friends make suicidal jokes and honestly now that I think about it, it's honestly really concerning.

depression is on the rise in our generation because of what we've experienced collectively amongst other things - the disconnection between a parent and their child is probably the worst it's been because of stereotypes and stigmas surrounding gen z. the "generation of change" or the "generation that should be better than the rest" is how we're described because everyone else seems to think we know all the answers and should be racing to clean up the mess *older generations* left bearing in mind *we're still kids.* we're oppressed and put down by the expectations of today in the form of the education system, being stripped of what makes us us and forced to lead lives that aren't ours. if you're expecting us to fix the planet why ruin it even further? how are we supposed to care for the planet if we can't care for ourselves? we've given up caring for ourselves because at the end of the day the world doesn't stop turning just because we feel like dying every minute we're alive. everything we're going through now, this plague, the marches, the movements, the violence - it's all going to make up our childhood and it's what we'll remember years from now. older generations have gone on about living through wars and playing outside before technology for longer than i can remember meanwhile climate change and social injustice continues to surge left right and centre - parents complain about their kids not doing well in life and compare them to others, increasing their insecurities with every "is that the best you can do?" and "i would've done better". they build us up with dreams and aspirations and break us down with suffocative environments and UNREAL expectations, planting toxic ideas in our heads and making us doubt everything we do. reaching out and talking about our problems leads us nowhere because when we do we're lectured and demoralised to the point of being embarrassed and afraid to ask for help because "there are other problems bigger than yours" and "maybe if you got up and did something about it you wouldn't feel like that" - it's hard enough to even consider talking about our problems let alone "getting up" to fix them. we've been judged, laughed at and desensitized to quite literally everything that has gone on because at this point anything remotely catastrophic that happens from now will be accepted with open arms. dying would be the greatest gift this generation could be offered which is why we joke about it so much. it's not dark humour anymore, it's a whole generation who would gladly accept the consequences of global warming, world war iii or whatever major crisis because they all want to die. if this is what our childhood is going to end up being i'd rather not stick around for the rest. how am i supposed to "make my life my own" and "live my life my own way" if all the things i've learnt are outdated, prejudiced and unrelated to today's problems?
@chloechin34123 жыл бұрын
I think that at first, it makes us all feel better temporarily when we make fun of all the horrible shit we go through. But after awhile, it turns people more cynical and unwilling to believe in the best of people and our parents. When you start seeing so many people depressed, you begin feeling depressed too once you realize there's a whole generation that's going through similar struggles. Everyone joking around about this stuff may make us feel better for a bit in the beginning, but it ultimately transforms your outlook negatively. That's why I really wanna discourage joking about suicide, because it could possibly do more harm to people than being a coping mechanism. It's not healthy and I wish more people would not only recognize that, but also try to think of how this could affect themselves/others. Being united in your struggles can be a good thing sometimes; it can make us stronger and we feel mutually understood. However, I feel like this isn't like that anymore.

The thing abt the suicide jokes is that a lot of gen z are just... passively suicidal. We're more open abt our mental health and we realized collectively using humor to cope with our situations would make us feel a little bit less shittier so... yeah :"D

7:46 I think as a gen z, we make jokes like that as a coping mechanism from the topic itself being taboo or poorly handled by grown responsible adults in our lives. Though, I must say there are some disadvantages to it being so normalised now. I feel like it’s harder for us to talk about it seriously and even if we’re ready to open up and have someone reach out to us, it’s hard to go “hey I think I need help”. So we keep doing what we’ve been doing with the jokes and people can’t tell us apart from those who are still doing it as a coping mechanism. I hope the last sentence makes sense. The de-stigmatisation should be so that we can talk and relate to each other on it and hopefully be able to come to a point where we’re ready to get help.
@김서연-t2h3 жыл бұрын
7:44 “i don’t know why they use those suicidal jokes” it’s bc we just humor as a coping mechanism so when our therapist or friends ask about our trauma or issues we can make it sound less sad so they don’t find us weird. like one of my “friends” said “yeah you have depression and severe trauma, but you can at least act normal” because if we weren’t to joke about it, we would probably get bullied or made fun of for opening up or what we went through, which would make us feel more shitty. i’m not speaking for all of gen z, i’m just saying from personal experience. it kinda connects to the our behavior we have when we talk to waiters.

I think so many kids on TikTok use dark humour because they lost a huge part of their youth because of the pandemic. That's difficult for anyone to accept, so I think this dark humour lets us share our resentment with others who also feel somewhat robbed not even just in the sense of the pandemic but also environmental issues etc. It's crazy to realize how much the world around us is changing and apadting.

Appreciated this vid and reading so many comments from gen z. As a millenial, I feel like a lot of our issues with our parents & feelings of hopelessness overlap. The older I get, the more I realize that my parents, their parents, etc all dealt with similar problems (mental health, abuse, neglect, systems that fuck them over, etc.) and it keeps trickling down to their children. We keep passing down a shit society to our children. Sometimes the only thing that keeps me going is knowing that there have been people in all generations fighting to change things for the better. I see hope in the ways that gen z has continued to have conversations about mental health, a self awareness that leads to change and challenging systems around them that no longer work. It is a lot of unlearning, building community, and honestly all of it fucking sucks (as it can feel like we are continually cleaning up past generation's mess). All of the knowledge that you have that past generations do not understand or didn't have emotional, physical, financial tools to understand, is a catalyst for change. It is power, and not hopeless 🧡

I think that the suicide jokes are connected to the topics mentioned in the first tiktok you watched, our parents can't help us handle our feelings and so we kinda have to deal with them ourselves. 그리고 제가 한국친구랑 이런 개 얘기했잖아요! 친구가 다 "아 미국인 왤케 강렬할까?"라는 생각 했어요. 이거 나이 차이만 아니고 나라 차이도 있잖아요.

I completely relate to this! I mean for me I relate and used to find them funny but now I get worried at the frequency. As someone who used to joke to cope then tried to OD due to depression, realising the jokes you made are your truest wishes and that your friends also do the same makes it not so funny anymore. I don't point it out but I do check in if the jokes become more frequent than usual.

The suicide jokes seem to stem from how hopeless we feel about growing up in this time period. There seems to be this responsibility that we need to “fix” major issues in the world. We feel incredibly pressured and like there’s no real way to have a good life if you aren’t born wealthy/privileged. most people are simply exaggerating about how a mild annoyance or a stressful day at work has them feeling like they don’t want to exist anymore. It mostly comes from actual mental health problems and also the environment we are in right now. It’s fair to say that it can be too dark, though. Triggering someone or making light of suicide is not the end goal in 99% of the cases.

I'm a millennial and I can totally relate, even back when I was a kid I was pretty aware of how shitty the world was (I was born 1990) and have always had depression. There's definitely hope though, it's slow but I can see change happening. Mental health, among other things, is becoming more of a topic that people talk about which is great. Plus I always keep in mind eventually there'll be more like-minded people who care for us and our planet and fewer of the older generations with their short-sightedness. Being a teenager is rough, especially these days. Stay grounded and keep on going, guys - you can make it through.
