I agree with Gabi’s mom . Speaking the language exclusively at home makes a huge difference. We only spoke Spanish to our daughter , she will be 3 soon and we are incorporating some english but have her repeat everything in both . My toddler speaks better Spanish than some of her cousins who are twice her age or more .
@laverome6 ай бұрын
I agree too! I've seen lots of children that have learned other languages at home and it's actually not that hard for them to learn another language at school. I came to Canada when I was 9 and only spoke Spanish and I learned English very fast because I was immersed into it.
@Odelaisys6 ай бұрын
@@laverome yes! I learned English when we came from Cuba . I picked it up so quickly and had no trouble in school . My mother also always made sure i knew how to read and write in Spanish since i spent most of my day in school speaking and writing in English .

Another good way is the one parent one language. So Gaby only speaks Korean & Josh only English. My mom nanny’s and the little girl speaks Spanish (my mom), Hebrew(her mom) & English (dad). She’s fluent in all 3.
@rosehipowl6 ай бұрын
I studied linguistics at university and we learnt about language acquisition for bilingual babies, and your mum is right. The best way (if you want your baby to speak fluently) is to only speak Korean at home, while letting her learn English from the world around her. Don't correct her when she speaks English at home, just speak back to her in Korean. If she says something like "look, there's a cat!", you reply back "아, 고양이 있네!" and make sure she knows the word "cat" in Korean and English. If you're playing pretend and she's talking in English, just make sure you reply back in Korean while continuing the conversation. She'll understand even if she doesn't use the language. Like, you're playing cafe or something and she might say "what do you want to order?", you say "커피 한잔 주세요", and she might say "coming right up!" - she understands, she just wants to test out English. Don't punish her for speaking English, just make sure she knows that you only speak Korean. If you want to do it so that you only speak Korean and Josh only speaks English, that can work as well, but you need to be a bit strict about it with yourselves as if she knows that you can speak English to her then she'll not always want to speak Korean as she's going to be more familiar with English. All of this is really guidelines rather than rules, and the lecturers who taught me this both were native speakers of different languages (German, Finnish) and had children in the UK with English speaking husbands, so they had experience. Don't be afraid to slip up sometimes, because that's normal. Baby Carrott will learn because she actively wants to learn. You just need to make sure she knows that Korean is the language at home and English is the language outside without punishing her for testing the boundaries or wanting to play with different languages. Also, don't be afraid to baby talk in any language! Babies love it! That's why it's an instinct to do it! The high pitch is easier for babies to hear and the exaggerated rhythm keeps their attention and shows them the pattern of the language. The shorter words also help as they are usually repeated (easy to memorise for a baby) and simplified (easy for a baby to say). You don't have to speak using baby talk - I wasn't spoken to that way as a baby as my mum hated it, and I turned out just fine (as far as you know) - but if you do, it's great for babies and isn't going to harm their language development in any way. In fact, it might help in some cases! But, in the end, whatever you decide to do is the best choice. I don't have children, I can only tell you from an academic point of view what I have learnt about bilingual children. Hopefully someone reads this and it helps them!

The baby has already experienced both languages in the womb, by Gabie and Josh. She hears Mom quite well. Not perfectly but is learning about language already. She is prepared to become bilingual. Love seeing your pure happiness and excited anticipation for baby carrot’s arrival. Having a second language is always a wonderful advantage when both of you are bilingual and can speak fluently in both languages at home. Don’t underestimate how little ones can learn both languages at the same time. It could put her at a disadvantage to start school being mostly fluent only in the second language. Please take that into consideration, or she will not feel confident starting at an English speaking school. Also, enjoyed watching Josh cook fried rice. If your cooktop is induction, you can place a Silpat mat on the surface while cooking to stop the frying pan from sliding around. I just discovered that neat trick with my new induction stove and thought I would share. Stay well Gabie and wishing you a safe delivery

On the multi lingo: my kids are growing in 3,5 languages (I'm Indonesian, my husband is Italian, we live in Germany and my husband & I speak in English). The kids are active speakers in the 3 languages and understands English. Since we're non native English speakers, we let them be taught in school and don't bother too much to "teach" them English. We do watch some documentaries in English and we have Americans & British family friends. Anyway, Gabbies mom is down right, you have to stick to it. You can decide on a system like Korean at home (& English outside) or even Korean with Gabby & English with Josh (inside& outside home). You stick to it.... Despite some of their exploration of languages (they'll mix in beginning but okay... When they're 20 yrs old they'll be grateful for their multilingual Brain). Can't wait to see baby carrot teaching Ollie korean😂😂😂😂😂

The language discussion was super interesting! I agree with your mom, your daughter will prioritise English as soon as she understands that her friends and teachers talk English, so to help her be more open to Korean you should talk to her primarily in Korean (and expect her to answer in Korean) otherwise kids sometimes learn to understand the language but never speak it themselves and don’t really learn to speak it in the end.
