Loved your commentary on Black Hawk Down. One thing to note, in the real life battle, Delta did have early IR lasers in their inventory. I’m not sure if the Rangers would’ve had this, but some Delta guys would mount AIM-1D lasers to the sights/barrels of their gun. It’s actually believed SFC Randy Shughart had an AIM-1D laser on his M14 rifle, but that’s just speculation. The movie doesn’t depict any guys with lasers.

First Blackhawk Down scene in this video. The guy on the right with the M249 was not a Machine-Gunner, he was an Automatic-Rifleman. Guy on the left with the M60 was a Machine-Gunner. The late 80’s and early 90’s were kind of weird time for US Army doctrine, where the Machine-Gunner and Auto-Rifleman were essentially the same role besides the difference in ammunition they carry. Since then, they have become distinctly different roles.

What's interesting is that Ewan Bremner, who played Nelson, was partially deafened while filming the scene with Tom Hardy as Twombly. The real Nelson was also deafened during the real firefight but I can't remember if he really was partnered with Twombly while separated from the other Rangers.

In the movie Blackhawk Down, that "strobe unit" wasn't accurate. the Delta and Rangers had portable IR strobes attached to their gear and the little birds lit up anyone not strobing (it was mentioned in the book)

Just wanted point out that these were not Delta or CAG operators. Most likely they might have been operators from Special Activities Unit, but definitely not CAG or SMU.

SMU is a "type" of unit, not a particular unit, it simply stands for Special Mission(s) Unit as I'm sure you're aware. And I'm not sure what this Special Activities Unit you speak of is, do you mean CIA Special Activities Center? As far as I know there aren't that many tier 1/SMU/national mission force units in the US military that will run and gun on the ground, but one of them is the unit that is most well known as Delta Force. So please elaborate the best you can on who was actually on the ground that day.
