I remember when I was kid wearing my grandpa's deck jacket from when he was in the army. He was a mechanic in Korea. Unfortunately I don't know what ever happened to it. And he died when I was a young boy so I never got to ask him about his time in Korea. I know you guys put a ton of time collecting and researching for these gear videos. I really enjoy watching them and it's great that you guys document things like this so it's not forgotten!

Nothing like meeting a Marine that served in WW2, Korea and Vietnam. He’s an old guy, but still got the spirit. I had the luxury of meeting him and we talked about a lot of things. I was in Kosovo, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan……both of us retired Marines. He passed some of his old uniforms to me as he saw I’m a collector. Never giving these items away. Maybe donate them to a museum one day. All I got to say is technology has come a long way, we use vehicles a lot more than in the 40’s to 70’s. Awesome video, there are some new things that came out in Korea that helped shape war differently 1. Helicopters 2. Flak jackets

When I joined the Army in 86. Arrived in Lewis later the next year. I was issued the Ranger Patrol cap, the wool sweater, wool Jac shirt, wool gloves and black leather shell, 1950 green wool trousers, heavy white wool socks, and the white wool long John’s. The great thing was I was going to Batt, so I then had to give all of that back before getting gortex and piolypro. Holy hell.

We lost my wife’s grandfather a couple years ago. He lived to be 89 and was like my own grandfather. He was a Korean War veteran who served as a machine gunner and squad leader in the 45th and 24th Infantry Divisions. I’m proud to have his shadow box on my mantle, next to my own and my grandfather’s from WW2. We were both members of our local American Legion post (I’m a Marine OIF veteran). You’re correct about the Korean War being the “forgotten war”. He told me when he came home he ran into a friend from high school who asked where he had been, as he hadn’t seen him around. He replied he had spent the last 16 months in Korea, and the guy was astonished to hear that we were fighting a war. A few years back, a guest speaker at our local Memorial Day ceremony was speaking about our town’s service members, and talked about WW2 and then Vietnam, etc., completely overlooking Korea. The old man lost his mind, marched over to the guy afterwards and read him the riot act!! Rightfully so. Thank you both for this video and keeping our Korean War brothers memory alive. Semper Fi🇺🇸

I guess we could blame watching MASH reruns as a kid, but I've always been fascinated by the Korean War, and disappointed by the lack of coverage and general interest in what is really a fascinating and important conflict. While the weapons systems and a lot of the other gear mightve been WW2 holdovers, the way that gear was used, both in terms of tactics and environment, was totally different. I've known a few Korean vets through the years and I always wondered why nobody seemed to give them the same respect as the WW2 guys. It's a shame that so many of them are gone now. Thank you so much for this video, Brent and Bruce. I hope that some people will start to get interested in this era of military history, and maybe now, the Korean war can start to be a bit less forgotten. Excellent presentation, gentlemen! Once again you prove that not only are you great collectors, but you can also be teachers. Love the way you use the inset photos to show the gear in context of it being used over there. It would be super cool to see presentations in the future on other conflicts that have been somewhat forgotten, like Panama or Grenada. You always deliver with these presentations!

That is an outstanding presentation. Some of the gear was still in use in the mid to late 1970's. I was a tanker in the 3rd ACR then. We still had the M3 Grease Gun, the flat mess kit, the Mummy sleeping bag, shelter half, D3A gloves, and wool field shirt, and wool field pants, half leather mittens, and the fish tail parka, the the beloved OD Green wool blanket.

Thanks for doing this excellent piece of the Korean war as and equipment. I'm a long time student of the "forgotten war" ever since s childhood as my dad was a Marine Corp pilot flying mostly F4U Corsairs . I had original issue surplus equipment ,tents, web gear, helmets entrenching tools, ,just about everything you showed and still have some of it including an M1 Carbine, Garand, bayonets and an M1950 gas stove. I enjoyed very much seeing you go through all of this.

Before the start of Korea, my father was in VMF 121 stationed at NSA Glenview, where they flew F4U Corsairs. When the war started, he was pulled from squadron duty and ended up first in the Pusan Perimeter armed with a BAR, then was injured at the Chosin reservoir at which time he was rotated back to the US were he received a medical discharge. By then VMF 121 had transitioned to Skyraiders.

I just re-read “The Last Stand of Fox Company.” It’s incredibly humbling to read the horrors of what the Marines went through. One thing that stood out to me were the casualties in sub zero temperatures. Marines would get hit, the wound would freeze, and the Marine would be evacuated to a higher echelon of care. Unfortunately once the Marine went into warmer areas, the wound would thaw and they would bleed again. We lost Marines that way.

The Army mountain bag is what grandpa(ww2+Korea vet) gave me among other things...jacket and liner(with bullet hole), shelter halves, duffel bag. It had a cotton liner that grandma had made for it. Also, had the outer shell that was only a little water proof. I am so glad you made this video. Let it be a primer for those learning the history and impact. Those that fought, very often left a legacy of honor in their posterity because of the sacrifice that families made. The impact is felt generations later; in understanding the warriors' trauma and the challenges faced when trying to get back to American life.

One of my uncles was in Korea. Before the war he was very good at math and worked as a draftsman at Chrysler. When he got drafted of course the Army discovered that he was skilled at math. As a result he got assigned to a mortar unit and he was one of the range plotters who filled out the range fans. I saw a picture of him once in Korea kneeling down with an M2 carbine slung over his shoulder and a range fan in his hand. He explained that the picture was taken after a several hour long battle over a hill trying to stop a Chinese attempt to take the hill. His efforts at plotting the range fans helped “liquidate” a lot of Peoples Liberation Army soldiers make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. He said “yep my math killed a lot of Chinaman that day”

Per my dad [Marines, KW] the Marines had the Thompson & shotguns in their TOE, but no 12ga ammo. Nobody wanted to lug the Thompson around on night patrol when the shotgun was better for blind engagements at bad breath distances, so they traded their Thompsons for some pallets of 12ga ammo from the Army guys who didn't have the Thompsons in their TOE but did get plenty of shotgun shells & 45acp to play with. PPSh battlefield pickups were also popular for night patrol as a discardable throwdown and then shift to your trusty M1 once the initial flurry of the engagement was past and the mag exhausted, according to him. Dad never spoke much of his experiences in the KW until one Thanksgiving in the late '90s after the memories had lost much of their sting. He grew up on a dirt farm in TX, so he went through boot at Camp Pendleton here in CA and met my mom [that was long before the state morphed into the PRK and the Granola Curtain went up...] EDIT: WRT the "found dead in bag," part of that was due to the venomous snakes slithering in for warmth & then biting the sleeper when they rolled over in the middle of the night.

Minor correction: original M1 carbines did not have a bayonet lug. The bayonet lug was added in 1945. So was available for the last year of WW2. This became the standard pattern and was added to all M1s when they were depot refurbished. The M2 (full auto version) came with bayonet lug already attached. The majority of the M2s in Korea were depot converted/overstamped M1s.

Amazing collection! Really interesting the WW2 era surplus variants, the cold weather additions and the infamous 'over whites'. Thanks Brent and Bruce for the effort putting this all together - couldn't have been easy! Suppose I can't get one of those 1917 water cooled machine guns with just a C&R license - damn it! Bruce needs to give de Gaulle his hat back...

Enjoyed this video. Pro tip.0:31. The open flap of the long, or short blanket roll should face to the rear. Reasoning is, if the opening flap is facing forward, it could be a snag hazard when moving through brush. The same goes for the pleats on the helmet cover. Pleats face the rear.

You guys need to be involved in the Korean War series from TImeghost and Indy Neidell. The timing is perfect.

In 1964, Hasbro put GI Joe on the market. The Action Soldier had green fatigues and brown boots. The Action Marine had camouflaged fatigues and black boots. In the early days of the Vietnam War, some Army troops still wore brown boots.

0:16 Man IDK where did you find that location, but as a Korean, the trees and the color of the dirt (which is colorless dead brown lol) is almost the same as real Korean countryside ! I can feel the nostalgia of when I was on military duty...

@@Brent0331It was texas! Looks like gangwon haha. It might be called a "Forgotten"war, but in my country, the impact caused by this conflict is massive throughout the entire modern day Korean culture, society and everything, and the war is still going on right now too! Thank you for making this video !

I have to say the first introduction I had to the Korean War was the M*A*S*H (1970) movie and the T.V. series (1972-1983). So a different side to the war while still making ppl aware of the war. Ofc I have learned more from channels like yourself and others on KZbin, so thankyou for that.

No matter what political purposes are, the intervention (more like support) of the UN brought decades of peace and order to the East Asia. Much appreciated!
