I hate that people still don’t get why Quasimodo and Esmerelda didn’t end up together; it’s the whole reason Heaven’s light and Hellfire are sang back to back. They’re two sides of the same obsession coin showing Quasimodo putting Esmerelda on a pedestal and seeing her as an angel is not real love. Also don’t discount Esmerelda’s character in this discussion, she’s a selfless person who helped Quasimodo out of the kindness of her heart. She witnessed Phoebus doing the same thing on several occasions while Quasimodo only helped her. Think of the scene where Phoebus has to convince Quasimodo to help him find The Court of Miracles, Phoebus says he won’t stand by while innocent people get massacred, Quasi says he’ll only help to repay Esmerelda’s kindness. Esmerelda would never fall in love with someone performing great acts of kindness or evil for her sake, but she would love someone who was willing to stand up for those less fortunate. Edit: Grammer

Gotta appreciate the guts Disney had in the 90s. The original story had to be toned down significantly to make it more child friendly and it still deals with heavy issues like lust, racism, and corruption. I just imagine someone reading the book (which does not have a happy ending, by the way) and going, "You know what? This would make a fantastic children's animated musical!" Still wish Quasi got the girl in the end, but it's a great movie. Definitely one of Disney's best!
