I think it's a combination of everything. Reasons like: Wages not catching up to inflation, Long work hours, Women having more options since they're more involved in the economy, The creation of birth control, A lot of Koreans being involved with the entertainment industry, Disagreements in political views, Not wanting to give up their "cool" lifestyle, etc.

I agree with pretty much everything you guys said, but it's primarily work culture. Their government is trying to raise the required work to an absurd 69 hours per week. Throw in the commute, work life obligations (like employee get togethers which is common) and it makes it impossible for any type of individual personal life let alone an entire family's. Late stage capitalism and inflation/the wealth gap is hitting competitive collectivist societies extra hard.

i guess that's the price you pay for economic development of a nation. you wanna be rich, you work harder and longer hours. it's no surprise that the asian countries that experience rapid economic growth post WW2 like korea, japan, china, singapore face a population decline. in contrast lower income countries like those in africa and south asia, tend to have higher population growth. that's sort of ironic when a common reason from people putting off marriage and kids is the lack of money. even the richer western nations have a lower TFR but it's offset somewhat by immigration.

@@jjsamuelgunn1136 That's the problem, its not I wanna be rich, it's the minority that will get all the money. The majority will pay with their suffering and lives for the minority. @@1stHalf i agree totally with you on first part of your observation. a single person can only get filthy rich riding on the backs of other people. there is no way one person can generate so much value added production himself to become a billionaire. there is only 24 hours in a day. there are some exceptions though. also don't forget, the person who hires you to work for him will never let you get richer than him. in the first place the purpose he is running the business is to enrich himself, not you, not his employees. i mentioned this to one of my friends the other day. he took the opposite viewpoint because his parents are businessowners. he said that's capitalism because the business owner is using the 'risk of his capital' so he is justifying in making more profits. there is your reply from the capitalists right there. no so very long ago that was the reason the western nations used to flog communist countries, saying that their socialist economic system is inferior to the western capitalist system saying that communist countries using socialist economic principles will have third world living standards. TBH, i tend to agree with your personal POV, why should we work like dogs to enrich the guy at the top. however, i am wary about setting minimum wage too high. not disagreeing, but wary. in my POV we should explore alternative like cooperatives where the workers and employees get a share in the business organization, not just the top guy. or even redefine work hours. the 9 to 5 system (worse in some countries) is a product of the industrial revolution just a couple hundred years ago. why is this a hard and fast rule for human civilization. why can't we work 5 hours a day and take shifts instead. heck, the business might even open 24 hours a day as long as there are people working 5 hour shifts. sure, salary will go down because you are working less hours. but at least you have a choice. you can 'double' your salary if you take another shift if you choose to.

It all comes down to economics. The cost of living is getting out of control. Women are opposed to patriarchy. Also won't marry men with no financial assets to offer. Men no longer want to make sacrifices being an ATM machine for their families and other burdens men have to carry. The singles in SK claim they are content with the way things are. Once they enjoyed living with no obligations then no marriages I guess. Can't blame them.

Even 40 hours is excessive if you really consider what it entails. It should be 21 hours a week. After that it's diminishing returns.

The Matthew effect hits different in S. Korea. Marriage is now becoming a privilege. In Korea, the guys I've seen get married and stay married already had an advantageous position in life, due to their parents. The other thing is that marriage is no cake walk, no matter your background. Your parents don't get along with your spouse or in-laws? That stress will kill you. #3, Infidelity is huge in Korea. If you know, you know.

Some cafes in S Korea don't allow children because they don't want the liability of cleaning after children or if the child were to get hurt on site. Most women don't want to be a full time housewife anymore and be the only one responsible for cooking and cleaning on all the holidays

Cost. cost of living in a society that experiences a rapid shift in development over one or two generations leads to a fundamental shift in social values. when the cost of children/families rises too rapidly, the middle class finds difficulty in self perpetuating. cheaper to stay single and enjoy a higher standard of living when family is no longer the greatest social value, while the mid to bottom finds that a family is no longer financially viable.

If it's "uncool" to have children, then you might as well talk about the inevitable conclusion of that sentiment: civilizational collapse. Forget about marriage for a second. How many Koreans are even in long-term common-law relationships to begin with? I'd venture to guess that a large chunk of people are either chronically single or engaging in casual flings, which is the root of the problem.

I've lived in Korea for 11 years and the first thing I always hear about having kids is the cost. (That it is super expensive) The funny thing, is it is NOT. (I've saved so much over 11 years and I own an apt now) Parents choose to make it expensive because Korea has such a competitive nature. Parents think they HAVE to send their kids to private academies everyday to improve their chances at success in life which can cost hundreds or thousands a week, and you hear about this in the news "having a child costs this much a week!". And these academies aren't just boring subjects, these include sports, robotics, coding, dance, etc. And in the Korean kids' culture, they often feel like a loser if they don't go to all the academies and their friends do (even if they don't like the subject). At school you hear kids say, "I learned A yesterday" and another kids rebuts, "well I learned B, A is easy". So, even the kids can pressure parents into going to the "hagwons". The second thing is kind of strange. Koreans feel like you need to have completed a checklist before you can even THINK ABOUNT getting married and having children. example: I have a job and make A amount of money [X], I have a car [X], I have an apartment owned [X], My partner meets A B C requirements [X], My parents approve of everything in my life [X], and now I can finally have a kid. For most, it's not even an option until these are met. Were as in the west, people just make babies and go with the flow and make it work financially. Koreans are perfectionists and planners so you really need to be in a good position to even consider it. Third, I think the over-time work culture + academy culture combined to have a strange effect where for the past 30ish years families have become less "loving". Compared to the west, family members see each other WAY less. Perhaps only weekend dinners. So these kids grow up not seeing the joy a family brings, and they raise their kids the same way, so less kids dream about starting a family and dream about making money more. And lastly, I think the "I want to stay cool" point is also true. So a lot of their money is budgeted to have a cooler life style, but they could easily afford to have a kid, that goes to 1 private academy a week. I really think this generation of parents need to spend more time with their kids, and when these kids grow up they'll want to have kids too. The best fix I believe is to have ALL academies close by 7pm (will never happen because they will make less money), because a lot of kids stay out until 11pm and eat dinner with friends and when they finally get home they do their school and academy homework. Plus, companies need to have no overtime policies, so parents and kids actually get to spend time together. You can make the cost of living crazy cheap, and parents will use that extra budget to send the kids to more academies haha. You gotta show this generation of kids what the joy of having a family is, or else they are just going to repeat what their parents and grandparents have done.

only their government can change this. Koreans are way overworked from low paying jobs to the high paying jobs it doesnt matter. I have never heard that it was "uncool" to have kids. That doesn't mean it's "uncool" though, I'm sure most people who get married intend to have a child in the future.

Kids per se aren't 'uncool'. But the resulting consequence drags your lifestyle into the realm of 'uncool'. You can't travel. You can't spend your excess cash on designer items, clothes, fancy cafes and restaurants, concerts, clubs. Meeting up with your friends for a wild night out? Forget it! Your social media life (which for most people is their entire life) will be zero cuz you don't have anything 'cool' to show. Instead of snapping a cool pic of your dressed up and made up for night out, what you have show is eyebags from staying up all night to feed your crying baby, messy floors from spilled milk or strewn toys. You'll be spending more time talking about which school to send your kid to than which club to visit this saturday night. Oh, and here's the real kicker. After ten years, your kid will be entering the phase called Teenagehood. You know this very well, the young generation are the gods that define what is 'cool' for the entire human race. To teenagers, their parents are automatically uncool. Congratulations, you have now been OFFICIALLY designated UNCOOL by the very brat you gave birth to.

I think the reason is how much people underestimate the affects of women getting educated in the dating market and earning more. Alot of people still think being "cool" is being dressed like thug or rapper and not being a professional. But actually as women got more educated there been an increase attractiveness for more the career and office type. Bascially how south korea is. More women want men working at top companies with top education. If you go by the statistics the most married group in USA is those that are educated and high wealth. The least married are uneducated and low wealth. I think alot of men havn't caught on this trend. More men are dropping out of university and less are going. However women are more attracted to those type that get educated nowaday. For example black women are 5 times more educated than black men. Then marriage rate for black americans is only 30percent

Seldom do I meet anyone who doesn’t want to have kids because they feel like it’s going to be uncool. Of course those people exist, but I think the main reason as to why individuals are not having kids is due to the cost of living. This isn’t just my opinion, if you look at studies, in majority of the developed countries where the cost of living have went up, the rate at which individuals have had children has started to decline. If you’re a young millennial or Gen Z, chances are you’ve grown up in a time where everything is expensive and because of this, you may have a different outlook than prior generations. Also, because the cost of living has gone up more and more, there is a high likelihood that individuals are coming from a family that had to struggle financially, and because of this, they may have a different perspective’ in which, if they are going to have children, they don’t want their child to struggle as much as they had to. Of course, there’s a lot of reasons as to why individuals aren’t having kids, but I feel like most of the time I never hear anyone talking about statistics and data, but rather what they feel has led to the problem, as opposed to what has actually led to the problem of us having a declining birth rate in developing countries. Also, add in the fact that both men and women are having declining fertility rates and the future is starting to look very grim. If the developed countries don’t start creating policies that will benefit individuals who have children, my personal belief is that by 2050 we’re going to get to the point where the declining birth rate will be irreversible if only relying on the traditional route. If the cost of living continues to go up, individuals feel like they don’t have a proper worklife balance, men and women continue to lose vital social skills due to our technological advancements or both men and women continue to become more infertile, then we will not be able to sustain the human race by continuing to go down the traditional route. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4255510/ www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/hsph-in-the-news/birth-rates-demographic-dividend-income-inequality/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8643527/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8977063/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9811250/

South Korea could grow babies in artificial wombs and then the babies could grow up and raise by foster parents in foster homes or in orphanages. This would add more people in the Korean population. Is this a good idea ?🤔
@henrytep8884
@henrytep8884 6 ай бұрын
No. If your society is relying on artificial womb to create orphans, then your society have become extremely extremely foolish and is on the past to self annihilating. This doesn’t fix any of the underlying issues and in fact creates the type of children with the worse outcomes which are kids in orphanage. I’m not saying kids in orphanage are evil, I’m saying the environment is in conducive to raising normal healthy children, and will not even be close to fixing the systemic problems of a society that relies on artificial wombs.

We have to remember the Korean War started in 1950 and since then South Korea had one of the most dramatic changes in economy. One of the reasons Koreans don’t want children is because of the lack of money but we also know that people with more wealth don’t have children. I’d rule out money as a red herring and instead blame the dramatic rise in standard of living. Newer generations are living through one of the most prosperous times for Korea and with that comes a higher standard of living, lifestyle inflation, and better education. It’s not easy to have and take care of children. More and more people now understand from social media how difficult it is on your body and physical/mental health to have children. Not only that, people expect better child care services and daycares for their children which require more money. Also they were one of the more socially conservative countries so they had more traditional gender roles. Korea tends to have more stringent social rules as well and the older generation reminds the newer generation about them.

I think is the educational system. It derives from this crazy standard. Education is all about. One salary is spend for children’s education. The pressure on children is so high . It is abnormal . I can understand why your are not willing to get kids . You only work to support the family, meaning the education for your kid .

I’m glad you guys pointed this problem out. People see overpopulation as a problem. But the United States and a lot of the richer Asian and European counties are below replacement rate. The way our economies operate is based on population growth and the younger generation supporting the older one through social security and general labor. In 30-50 years we will have way more older people than younger. Our system isn’t designed to be sustainable that way and that’s when the real suffering starts! Y’all need to start making babies. At least that part is fun 😅!

Selfishness: These sisters will cry later when they are older. Never heard someone said " I wish I worked more". Exchanging family for a fruitful carreer is losing 📉 bet on the long run. Extreme feminism is killing women and they'll realize it when they are older. When you are young you have friends and lovers. As you get older those circles will grow smaller. Family doesn't leave.

Being a single woman is cool only when you are in your mid to late 20s once you reach mid 30s you are no longer hot! It doesn't matter whether you wear branded clothes from head to Toe nobody will pay any attention to you. Then old age will creep up and you will have less and less friends as time goes on and finally will end up in public old age centre with no visitors cause you dont have a baby. You wont even have a husband to give you company. To me that's a sad existence. Woman needs to realise that just like flowers they will enjoy spring but will also grow old and unwanted. That's why people have family, to give each other companies cause we are social animal. We can't live alone forever
