Well, at least in the west, when girls say it it's an innocent compliment. When guys suddenly blurt it out, it can come across as kind of creepy. I wonder if it carries the same kind of connotations in the east.

More like you get punched in the face lol. Anything dealing with someone's personal image in the west seems to have a negative connotation. That's even more true nowadays. As you can't really even pay anyone a compliment without you being accused of harassment. It's really getting to the point now. Where I don't even like talking to westerners. This is coming from a Westerner who grew up here lol. We Americans really would benefit from looking outside the box for once. I really think a lot of it has to do with entitlement. The worst possible thing and the worst aspect of Western life. The whole idea that the individual Trumps all. However there are so many individual traits that could offend someone else. I just like the Korean approach better is all, just saying. :)

I think it would have been more interesting to do this w/ an Asian American. Since most of their exposure to the US comes from media where Asian Americans are often underrepresented, I feel a lot of Koreans have a certain image of what an American looks like... The last time I visited Seoul about a year ago I ended up in a random conversation w/ a college girl & she was genuinely confused when I told her that I’m American. Her exact response was, “bUt YoU lOoK aSiAn?!??” I had to explain to her that my great grandparents immigrated to the States from Japan...
@worshipthecomedygodseoeunk4010
@worshipthecomedygodseoeunk4010 4 жыл бұрын
the exact same thing happened to me. this college girl was completely distrusting about even the possibility of me being an american. even though i have white parents and grew up in rural minnesota my whole life lmao like wtf. "bUt yOu'Re AsIaN" I dont even take off my shoes at the door lol

@Mikie E its one thing to confuse someone as a local, and its another thing to refuse to believe that you're an american. us asian americans get very conflicting messages about our identities. we're either too "white" and not asian enough, or too asian to be american. we either have asian blood and ancestry, or growing up in a western country erases our asianness. I had a white girl tell every korean we met that I am "not Korean or asian" as she would not let me answer for myself about how I identify. (im a korean adoptee born in daegu) apparently my asian looks didnt matter to her. she was a creepy weeaboo though. i just wish people would let us be both, dont know why we gotta choose one 🤷‍♀️

@@worshipthecomedygodseoeunk4010 most people in Asia has never interacted with westerners their whole life. They probably saw few tourists. But interacting with them? nope. So it is unique experience for most to meet Asian Americans and Westerners.
@worshipthecomedygodseoeunk4010

@@MrDulguN yeah i acknowledge that. considering foreigners only make a small percentage of the population, its unrealistic to think most have met or interacted with a foreigner. however,most of them still are exposed to western media, even if they don't necessarily have interest in it. the problem is, that western media also shows only very one dimensional representations of western people, and most casts are majority white. stereotypes are very prevalent in western film and tv, so it still affects the ideas they have of americans and other westerners. in reality, we are very diverse, with individual experiences. i just hope asians can realize that.

My husband went to an even smaller school( 20 people total in his class) the a girl was from Germany( foreign exchange student) I run into Mexicans all the time. Plus I met a man from Nigeria. I'm an okie, we have 2 major cities, OKC and Tulsa, i lived 35 minutes out side city limits on my very small town and 3 hours from OKC and 2 hours from Tulsa. It's more common than you think.

Or the way u were raised. Cause ive been to texas (was born there but moved away when i was two) and i got family there, and i dont rlly remember ppl covering their faces when they laugh like koreans. It's because South Korea has been America's ally since the Korean War. North Korea is China/Russia ally. South Korea has had the luxury of having western movies/media for +50 years, and those years have some of the greatest films of western society (hollywood today is much different) but western media has had a huge part in the way beauty is viewed. It's not something to "hate" it's just something to understand. If you want, you can enjoy North Korean beauty, since western society has not had a hold on it, but then you'd be seen as a fool in the eyes of South Koreans. Hate comes from ignorance.

This is so weird to me. I live in Sydney, Australia and I think the most recent stats were something like 1 in 4 people were born overseas so I’m so used to ‘foreigners’ and just people who come from other cultures. You hear lots of people walking around speaking different languages and some areas will have greater populations of Indian or Chinese speakers (for example) and stores and street signs will have language for both English and other speakers (depending on the primary demographic of the town). I find it so interesting how when I went to Japan too that people were amazed by meeting westerners just because I’m so used to living in a multicultural city. Super super cool video.
