Yes. Many Americans believe they don't have to learn a foreign language. It's common to assume if marrying someone from a different country, that the spouse will learn English and they don't have to learn their partner's language. Obviously, not everyone is like this and will learn their spouses language regardless and there are many KZbin channels that show couples learning each other's languages. But when you question those who don't believe they should learn, most of the time it comes down to jingoism. Just because they marry someone from another culture doesn't mean they respect them&their culture. Btw, the USA does not have an official language, even if most would assume it's English. The experience of Asian Americans is different from Asians. I remember reading an essay of a Chinese American and how she got bullied in school. How her bullied made fun of her and her culture only later in life to show off when learning her language because then it was convenient for them. They learned because it was advantageous for them and not because they were interested in the history or culture. And of course, they never acknowledged their mistreatment towards her.

Black Panther 1 enjoyed immense popularity in South Korea, attracting a staggering 5.4 million viewers, which made it a phenomenal success. Its opening day alone drew in an impressive 630,012 viewers, breaking the record for the highest opening in South Korea for 2018. This achievement was notable as it had been four years since a foreign film, Frozen in 2014, dominated the box office during the Lunar New Year holiday season. Black Panther 1 shattered that record. Notably, Black Panther 1 also became the fastest foreign film to reach over 5 million viewers among all movies released in Korea in February 2018. The fact that it ultimately amassed 5.4 million viewers indicates that it captured the attention of over 10% of South Korea's entire population. Some may argue that Black Panther's success was unsurprising given its association with the Marvel franchise. To counter this, let's consider another example. Get Out, a satirical movie tackling racism, was not widely recognized initially. Consequently, Korean film importers had no plans to bring the film to Korea. However, many Korean individuals went as far as crowdfunding and petitioning the importers to release the movie. Eventually, Get Out climbed to the top of the Korean box office, becoming the second-largest performance worldwide after the United States. Director Jordan Peele, in a promotional video for his next film, Us, acknowledged that Get Out was born in the United States but found tremendous support and success in Korea. Does this indicate Koreans are racist? It's unfair to attribute The Little Mermaid's failure solely to racial discrimination. People in Korea refuse to go to movie the little mermaid not because they are racists but Disney didn't make a good movie.

As a korean,I feel like americans and overall the westerners tend to think racism is all about blackpeople,Thankfully,as you mentioned,’get out’ and ‘blackpanther’ was a big hit in korea but that doesn’t ‘prove’that ‘koreans aren’t racist’. we liked the movies because it was entertaining to watch,well-made not necessarily because it featured black people. Similarly, we wanted the 3d version of the beloved disney’s little mermaid, because in korea , ‘live action’ contents are loved when it accurately captures the charm of the original:we have fun comparing the original and the ‘live action’,and love how similar they look. But the ‘little mermaid’ although with the same name, and same studio did not look like the little mermaid we were expecting.I saw some comments saying that since hailey’s vocal was well enough, but in korea we didn’t think only her vocals is what ariel is all about and were disappointed by how the live action failed to capture the look of the original character. +I’ve heard that black people tend to have a hard time in hollywood, but I think black actors deserve a better, more fitting role and story, rather than a mc in a old german fairytale +not to be rude, but I consider judging someone wheter they are racist or not based on whether thy watch a black featured movie is a pretty shallow way of filtering racists

Western media is very funny. In Europe, the film also received huge critical reviews and was sluggish at the box office. Nevertheless, it only criticizes East Asia. Personal attacks and mocking memes against the black mermaid were all created in the American Internet community. The United States has no right to criticize any other country. Especially, there is no right to criticize South Korea, where racially-related violent murders are much rarer than in the US and Europe. And in South Korea, Spider-Man: New Universe with a black Spider-Man was a hit, and Aladdin with a black Genie was watched by more than 10 million people (1/5 of Entire South Korean Population). Black Panther was also quite successful in South Korea. Rethink whether racism is a real factor or the movie itself is the problem.

It was never about racism. Encanto, Coco, Aladdin, (etc.) are all well received everywhere even though their main characters are POC. What's the difference? These movies were ORIGINAL, the art/visuals were COLOUFUL and thoroughly done, and those Characters being POC of a culture actually ADDED to the story (it influenced the music, setting, art styles, plot interactions with family and others, etc.) Swapping Ariel's race to Black added nothing to the movie's plot or characterisation whatsoever. If Hailey could be swapped out with another White actress without affecting the plot, art, or character interactions, then the movie was not true representation to begin with. Notice how if you swapped races with the movies I mentioned, it will just not work. Unfortunately the media is taking advantage of this and guilt-tripping everyone by calling them racists for not liking this movie. Disney needs to realise what REAL representation is instead of lazily allocating a POC actress in a cheap-looking, recycled movie while trying to tick the boxes for "being diverse"

Why do you guys have to shoehorn African related folklore into everything the moment it’s a black person playing the role? Can you not see us as people instead of a skin color? Literally nothing changed in the story line by her having darker skin. A mermaid isn’t a human being. Movies change eye colour and hair colour all the time. Yet the moment they change skin colour and it’s a black person, suddenly it’s a huge problem? This isn’t Mulan or Belle where are the culture is very obvious and part of the story. The original little mermaid literally had a Jamaican crab and black Caribbean music. But God forbid a black person actually sing those songs as the mermaid. Then the movie isn’t “black” enough.

Korea had the biggest box office for black panther outside US, UK and China, if you consider Korea's population size is merely a fraction of the other 3 countries you can clearly see Korea embracing Black Panther as a whole and unfazed by a black lead cast. If you consider other examples of huge hits in korean box office from foreign non-hollywood films with brown or black lead cast that have failed to reach similar success in western countries. Koreans seem to be more accepting of multiple ethnicities represented on screen. Korea has a huge market of live action versions of their web published graphic novels called webtoons, whilst small deviation is accepted and embraced large departures from original series are often heavily criticised as it appears staying true to the original is a more important factor to the Korean consumers than we realise. Suddenly hollywood wants us to believe little mermaid tanking must be due to Korean racism and not the fact that disney botched another live action remake. Let us not forget the times western remakes of popular japanese animated series like avatar the last airbender, dragonball z failing in western markets, you couldnt say it was because the western consumers were racist to the white cast, but rather the failure of the end result in living up to the original.

I actually agree with this Black Panther was very successful in Korea and I've seen how brutally honest Koreans are when they dont like a drama or a movie they won't force themselves to watch to try and appease others. I keep saying this and I'll say it again if you don't want to watch the movie don't force yourself to. To be honest the movie for me lacked the vibrancy and color the original had I didn't enjoy it as much but I would enjoy Disney making new stories and focusing on creating a piece of film that touches people rather than a lazy race swap and expecting everyone to be happy about it.

Korea is not really talking about the color. We are talking about how poorly the movie was made. simply we compare with original animation that was produced in same company. Some of people are saying Koreans are racists, but when Chadwick Boseman died, we cried together. When we watch Chiwetel in '12 years a slave', we were sad and mad together about what we have watched through the screen and feel the pain. Disney released the movie in KOR first cuz they were expecting some good feedback as usual and they turned over cuz they did not hear what they were expected. What a crucial company that misleading kids into wrong way hating Koreans or thinking Koreans are racists. Disney is literally making another discrimination by making frames about Korean.

It’s a little about skin tone and casting someone that looks Nothing like Ariel. The hair was also bland not a bright red. That’s ok to point out as a reason for something to disappoint a potential buyer. There are so many issues with this film beyond just that. In America white people are made to feel that we are racist or phobic if we don’t support something. If we don’t bow to their demands. Don’t pay attention to whining about racism or rainbowphobic. Don't ignore Koreans' eye for movies. Since most korean people have very high academic standards and have no outside hobbies that can be enjoyed differently like foreign countries, their perspective on movies and dramas has developed very fast and high. Gaslighting race marketing may be successful in USA, such as "You are a cool person only when you see this movie, and you can be recognized that you are not a racist" but that doesn't work in Korea. In Korea, only "level of completion" is guaranteed success.

The opinion that Koreans don't watch The Little Mermaid because they are racists is unfounded. Koreans tend to be indifferent towards racial issues because Korea, as a mono-ethnic nation for the past 5,000 years, has not experienced conflicts related to race. Although the United States witnessed a black-and-white controversy surrounding the casting of the Genie in Disney's live-action film Aladdin, Koreans did not pay much attention to whether the Genie was portrayed as white or black. Of course, there is a perception that Koreans are desensitized to racism. In the past, Koreans may have had language habits that were unpleasant for people of other races to hear. However, it is important to note that these habits were not intended to make them uncomfortable or to discriminate against them. Instead, they were a product of Korea's unique historical background. Applying the concept of political correctness to Koreans without considering the distinctiveness of Korea's 5,000-year history, if anything, could be seen as discriminatory thinking and behavior.

It's not just racism why the movie bombed in Korea. Ticket prices have gone way up since the pandemic, and people are reluctant to watch movie that isn't worth watching at all. They'd just wait for the movies to be available on Netflix or Disney+. It's not just _The Little Mermaid_ that bombed, almost all Korean movies released in 2023 (except for _The Roundup: No Way Out_ ) didn't even make money for their production fees. Heck, even _Decision to Leave_ didn't get many popularity like Parasite did in 2019. Also, my basic thoughts, the idea 'Bailey did not fit the movie' can also be interpreted as 'The movie did not fit Bailey at all'. If you want some character change in the movie, you'd expect other things about the character to change. All that changed in the live-action movie was literally the settings and some line of dialog changes. This made Bailey much more unsuitable for the movie. You can't just expect everyone to enjoy your movie. That is not racist, that is the basic fact for making any media. People go to the theater to have fun time, not to get lectured about basic social values they learned from school. I don't think the cast is something to be blamed upon at all. The blame has to go to the story-writers who were lazy to remaster the beautiful story of Ariel while changing her skin color. Just learn from Pixar making masterpieces about diversity that Disney wanted to put in their story. PC is not the problem, the people trying to justify their unfinished, bad storyline with PC is the problem. Sure, some toxic internet users in Korea propagating hate speech against the actor is seriously concerning and we should all stop that. I am not even going to deny we are free from racism. If we want our cultural content to be more widespread, we should probably think outside of the box called 'Homogenousity'. We should really be proud to say there are many colors of Koreans, cause there must be a black guy who has Korean passport and all that stuff. Also, let's talk about other European countries who are ALSO giving negative reviews on the movie, and as far as I know, some of them has more black people than here. It's not just us who think this movie is disappointing.

Ariel has been a favorite character, especially for little girls for decades. She has had iconic red hair, light skin, blue eyes, with a green tail and purple sea shell top. That has been her image, an image everyone knows. This is the Ariel that people grew up with. When you change up the familiar features of a cherished childhood figure, you run the risk of alienating a die hard fan base. Some people cannot get past these changes and feel strongly about stuff they're nostalgic over. Children don't remember everything that happens in childhood so the really memorable things that tend to stick with them are toys, movies, tv shows and the characters in them. You feel as if you know them because they were always with you growing up. It makes it hard to accept big changes.

Sea life live in coral. Ariel’s kingdom of Atlantica was changed to a pillar coral 🪸 for a more organic feel. Mainly because the mermaids are all inspired by various fish. Instead of making the opening scene be a meeting between Triton and his daughters in a boring cave (which btw I also disliked, since Ariel's supposed to be young, a bit naive, etc, none of which are the qualities of a queen), they should've recreated the original scene; the one that showed a party in honour of Triton. When it comes to the reason why people want to go see Disney Live-Action Remakes, I think the woman in the gray jacket said it perfectly: "They want to see their childhood memories and imaginations from books and pictures come to life." That is the biggest reason why. And, although, I personally don't care if Arial is the perfect image of the original, I understand why others are disappointed. Also, I think the trailer didn't do the movie justice. I saw the movie and thought it was probably one of the most similar remakes to the original movie, in terms of the storyline and key parts of the original movie. I also think the trailer did make out the movie to be a bit darker than the original. But it definitely was not. I think it was very light, colorful, and fun. I was hesitant because it did look dark and I thought Ursula in particular would be too scary for them. However it was as you say bright and closely followed the story. Ariel's casting was undeniably controversial but after watching the film I think they tackled it from a different angle. Yes she was still an innocent sweetheart, but her curiosity really got the better of her in this film. At times it comes across as determination, particularly when she keeps signing Part of Your World. You can see it in her body language. Overall I think it was great. Also let's face it, most Disney live action is controversial. Lion King was seen as soulless, Mulan was too realistic Pinocchio and Jungle Book got outdone by Netflix.

There need to be no logical explanation for customers who didn’t enjoy movie. They paid for seats and if many audiences didn’t like the movie than the producer didn’t make movie that’s worth paying for. If you ask people to make logical reports for customers why they didn’t enjoy the movie you should give money back before you asked for it. So stop making nasty excuses like US media blaming global failure of the movie to Asians. Why do you think Disney fired producer, diversity director and staffs? Bc they made so so movie. It wasn’t mega hit globally. Simple fact! Not everyone enjoyed nor globally recognized and not all races even in US loved the movie. There are hundreds of critics and bad reviews about this movie and disappointments from old fans or original animations as much as good ones. Just this movie was not commercially successful worldwide. So Don’t try to bring race card bc it won’t work anymore. it only represents you are making ugly excuses. So so movie is so- so movie. You can’t change customers mind.

Honestly, as a black woman, this was the BEST review I’ve seen of this movie thus far. Honest and thoughtful commentary, from all of the people you interviewed and they weren’t nasty. It wasn’t all about race being the issue, it was about the cinematography being off and the fact that (just like MOST people in America), Koreans can for the most part, see through the “woke” fakeness that Hollywood is currently pushing and that’s what’s actually turning audiences everywhere off. Me personally, I hate race swaps especially swapping black characters in place of white ones, because it’s so bottom of the barrel. I also hated it when Disney casted a gay man as Cinderella’s fairy godmother or a Hispanic woman as Cinderella. When I was a kid, the Cinderella movie that had Brandy in it, also was confusing to me lol. There are literally Caribbean mermaid folklore stories, that Disney could’ve turned into a movie if they wanted to be revolutionary, this just isn’t it. I do feel sorry for Halle Bailey though, because I honestly think she’s another woke-washed celebrity who’s out of touch with reality and accepted this role believing it would be well received by the masses, I hope she’s not internalizing this push back as “racism” and learns to accept that Disney basically made a poor decision and used her image as the face of it.
