Korg 01/Wfd repair

In this video I show you how to repair the Korg 01/Wfd, all tacktile switches and the backlight EL Foil I will replace in this video.

Hey, great video! I've been inside my 01/W numerous times to replace broken keys and to lubricate the keys, but I needed to install a new backlight this time. This video was really helpful to tick off the various boards and sections that needed to be removed. I got everything removed, backlight installed, and everything back together and working with no screws remaining! Thanks for doing the work and posting the video.

FINALLY!!, after years of looking at a almost black LCD screen, i finally decided to replace it with a LED,.. by myself!!.. and thnks to Arnold and his channel here, i succeeded!! :D:D

Great job, and tutorial. I've taken all of my Korgs apart many times for fixing, maintenance, swapping things, etc, in the course of over 30 years. But i never bothered to take them apart just because of the LCD backlight. Never bothered me at all. It's a bit harder to read, but not enough for me to merit stripping the whole thing apart just to change it. I admire your persistence 😃

Boy, Korg sure had some crappy design engineering back when this was produced. The first thing that's going to go on this keyboard and they make it the hardest thing to get at. I wish they would have designed it so you could get at it from the front without going through all the rigmarole in the back 🙂

It maybe a laborious process, but Korg's design on these synths is anything but "crappy". Other brands are exactly the same for these types of synths. The M1, T series, 01/W series, Wavestation, and Trinity where the pinnacle of Korg's design and built. They are almost virtually indestructible.

I followed your video on replacing a display in a Wavestation and managed to fix mine. I'm going to attempt to insert a new El Foil in a 1993 Korg i3 and wondered if the procedure would be the same as the 01/Wfd. Did you fit the new foil next to the glass display or behind the old foil? Thanks for all your help. Great videos.

Hi. First, thanks for this video. I’m trying to replace my LED and LCD. The old one has two leads, the one I bought doesn’t. The only cable is the flat ribbon, and I wonder if they still need the others(?) It’s my first time doing this and I’m not ver my handy but decided t give it a try after watching this video. Any thoughts?

Hello and thanks for uploading this tutorial. I have a 01W FD and the backlight is dead. Can you suggest where to buy the foil for backlighting? I also have to replace the backup battery. Can you please tell if it is soldered to the mainboard or just insterted as on computer motherboards? is it a standard CR2032? Many thanks. Kind regards

The backlight you can buy at backlight4you.com. the battery is not soldered but you can replace it just by clicking the old one out and push in a new one. Have fun

Hi, nice video! What I didn't see is if you replaced the foil or if you slided the new one over the old one... I have to replace two of them in my D50 and SY77...

Hi Tony I slided him behind over the old one and I works great, don't open the display or you will destroy it. Happy soldering.

I too have a 01/Wfd, and I've written all my songs on it, but I don't know how to export (or transfer) all the MIDI information (from the sequencer) into my laptop. Do you have any experience in this?

Arnold thanks for uploading this video, i'm also trying to replace the backlight on my Korg 01wfd and t's been the best step by step video i've watched on youtube so far. I just have a couple question; why did you slide in the new foil over the old one? Can you take the old one out and put in the new one? Which way is better? Thanks in advanced. Blessings!!!

Hi Pianoman Thanks for the kind words. please dont take out the old foil begouse you will ruin your display, just desolder the two pins and cut them off tight to the display and slide the new foil in front of the old foil, it will fit perfect and than solder the two pins back on the display board. Happy soldering.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way, because the el is still glued to the circuit board and you have to completely detach the frame for it

Thats correct but you dont need to take out the old foil, just slide the new foil in front of the old one. The old one is only glued on the back side. Please dont detach the frame begouse you will ruin the displey.

​@@RichardDenRooyen1973 Je kan het display bestellen bij .synth-parts.com, dat is in Duitsland. Hij verzend gewoon naar Nederland. Er zit ook een SMD bij die je moet vervangen zoals je kan zien in het filmpje, ook zit er een duidelijke beschrijving bij. Wel prijzig euro 77,50.

Als je alleen de Ell Foil wilt vervangen dan heb ik deze hier nog wel liggen voor je. En als je display defect is dan heb ik deze ook eventueel wel voor je, inclusief nieuwe Ell Foil voor een redelijk prijsje. Alvast succes met de reparatie 👍👍
