Legendary keyboardist Jordan Rudess recently took part in a series of special Guitar Center Workshop events at select Guitar Center locations throughout the Northeast. These intimate Workshops gave musicians and fans alike an up-close, interactive experience. In addition to some great playing and some wonderful insight into his process, Jordan provided fans with fantastic demonstrations of the Kronos Music Workstation, microPIANO and nanoSERIES 2 MIDI controllers. Check out this video of Jordan's March 12th stop at Guitar Center's Manhattan location.

Rudess is perhaps the reigning keyboard badass. But what amazes me most about him is the accessibility he grants to the industry and other other keyboard players. He is an old school class act.

this is what drew me to KORG KARMA ...it has the power to produce lots of robust big huge sounds ........but a simple piano chord progression makes you sound and look professional. *SIMPLE IS ALWAYS SOUNDS BETTER*

to all apprentice in piano playing, first of all Jordan Rudess went to Julliar School of Music in New York, that's why he can play. lots of work and practice. you got to study hard, hannon, hertz, clementi, Czerny, beyer, and then you can get to Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, once you learn from those great composer, then you can play.

I love what he's doing on "Breaking all illusions" (at 1h20m in). Wow... what a talent in every way --- playing technique, sound design, orchestration, meshing with his band, flawless handling of the most bizarre meter changes...He'd have been a good concert pianist, but instead he became the best f...ing rock keyboardist bar none.

I have 3 keyboard players who are my all time favorites. Jordan Rudess Jon Lord Rick Wakeman No order. But I must say Jordan Rudess absolutely blows me away. I was raised by a father who was a Classical Pianist, he had a Grand Piano that if my memory serves me correct was a Steinway. I have no idea whatever happened to the Grand. I started to get into keyboards seriously in the mid-1970s. I purchased a Hammond B3 with a Leslie 122 speaker cabinet and true story, I bought is from a very old man and wife in Torrance California. The B3 once bought NEVER left their living room, It was in absolute mint condition. They even had this old fella who was. aa B3 Master technician, be tuned the B3 up every 4 to 5 years and just b4 I bought the Organ. In 1980 I went back into the US Army and Warrant Officer Academy followed by Flight school to fly helicopters. I was actually pretty good but when we got orders to deploy to Germany I was forced to sell the B3. We were living in Central Texas, by Fort Hood. There was a black church 25 miles from my home and they knew that I owned a B3. The Pastor on schedule every 6 months or so would call me and ask If I was interested in selling my B3. I said No way. In 1985, like clockwork, the Pastor called and again asked if I would sell his Church my B3. His timing was spot on. I said sir if you want it, it's yours. I sold the B3 for exactly what I paid for it, $2800. He got a beautiful organ and we felt good because it was going to a Nice Church family. Next part here is really Kool, The Pastor brought a UHAUL truck to my home and along with his was his entire Choir and Keyboardist. These nice people for at least an hour sang along with the B3. The experience will never be forgotten.

Ok, I will give you that Bach, Mozart, etc, helped shaped Jordan who he is, but unless you are subscribed to his official channel, you wouldnt know what he plays and what he doesnt. And unless you research extensively, you wouldnt know that he played strictly classic pieces for 10 years of his life. And im positive he still goes back to his roots and will play very difficult classical songs. Jordan Rudess is one of the best pianists to live, and no question the best keyboardist to live.

Seems to me that on KZbin - the better the player the more negative comments there are. Now here's a guy , who is totally in a class all by himself in so many ways. Virtuoso , Scholar and pretty much one of the masters (Bach Mozart Beethoven) Jordan Rudess is hands down one of the greatest musician of ALL TIME !! when he speaks any other 'musician' worth a salt should just be quiet and listen. If I had the chance to meet Bach or Mozart I would have been all ears. Thanks for this post !!

I've always enjoyed Jordan Rudess as well as Derek Sherinian as keyboard players but one man that I've listened to for 30 years or so is Tony McAlpine. Awesome on keys and can hang with Steve Vai (he plays w/Vai on big tour stuff) on guitar. So many good players out there.

Jordan Rudess: At nine, he entered the Juilliard School of Music Pre-College Division for classical piano training, but by his late teens he had grown increasingly interested in synthesizers and progressive rock music. Against the counsel of his parents and tutors, he turned away from classical piano and tried his hand as a solo progressive rock keyboardist.

Yeah. He says he likes to use it because he comes from a Julliard background and it helps him concentrate and not get focused on things around him. Makes complete sense because if I had the money for that thing I'd buy it too. Reading Music while playing helps you stay WAY more relaxed than just memorizing it. (EVEN though he has it memorized, it still helps.)

To those debating J Rudess' sight reading and what not. Follow his personal channel JCRUDESS. Plenty of him improving more complicated things here with out sheet music. Proof in the pudding, He does both. Which makes him.. pretty well rounded.

Lets not forget, that although he could play from memory, the sheet musi can also be used as a referance. Not a permanent set in stone thing that is the only concrete factor in how he is able to play these licks.

I can see why people may think he sight reads; he looks at his music quite a bit. In my opinion (don't know if its true, but it makes sense) I think he just looks at it for reference (for example, what key he's in) and improvs solo's from that.

I know about Chopin and Rach and I get chills every time I hear their playing or their compositions. I may be a jazz pianist but music(in general )taught me to respect good musicians despite their "musical enviroment". Most of the classical musicians only recognize Mozart,Beethoven,Chopin,etc.. When they hear about Peterson,Hancock,Ruddess,Steve Vai,etc they change their voice and they speak with contempt like they are a superior race of musicians xD You seem like one of them too...

I have a Kurzweil so I'm just telling you so it's not a biased answer. But you can't really judge the sound over a video, if you play a Korg Kronos in real life, you'd realize how amazing and fresh it sounds. It's hard to explain but the piano sounds and basically every sound just sounds so fresh. But opinions are opinions.
