KORG MS-20mini & Doepfer Dark Time

On special request, KORG MS-20mini under control of Doepfer Dark Time sequencer. Audio goes into TC Flashback pingpong delay, just for fun. CV1 goes to VCOs, CV2 goes to VCFs, Gate goes to KORG's ESP for format conversion and, then, goes to EGs trigger.
On synthesizer, EG1 goes to VCA, EG2 + goes to LP filter, EG2 - (reverse) goes to HP filter. Have fun.

That shows just incredible potential! The thing that's great about it is that it's supporting an actual song structure, e.g. I, IV, V type progression, with changes occurring with just a touch of the root note. The problem with most sequencer demos, just like most looper demos, is that they are monotonous and support an actual chord progression. This shows how "real" composition is possible with a minimum of paraphernalia. Cheers, Bruce.

@Robson Victor - Take the CV out of your MS-20 to the CV input on the Dark Time. The CV out of your Dark Time should be sent to the CV in of your CV input of your MS-20 (and possibly the gate of the Dark Time to the input of the Envelope Generator on your MS-20). Not sure how you have this set up.

I'm about to do a similar thing with my ms20 mini. I shall be sending a sequence from my Rene sequencer into the English Tear to convert the voltages and then into the ms20. Yee hah! Fine demo btw. Thanks. Dark time looks like a fine sequencer. Temptation!

+Wot Mate the harvestman English Tear was excellent and useful, but my new korg sq1 sequencer has now replaced it. It can transmit to pretty much any format. Very handy,and cheap!

I had a pleasure today, to compare it with the orginal one (i mean old the one). I like the new size more. What about the sound? It was a litle bit difficult to me to compare because I couldn't just load the same presets on both. I mean: there will be always some difference between the set of the knobs. But! ... I just like the new one more! Serious :) cheers

yeah I'm really impressed with the chord changes as mentioned earlier. but I don't have a fielder. I'm wondering if there are other types of sequencers out there that let you pick the pitch and kind of arpeggiator from that, the way you have here. I hope this could be done with the volca or something...

AudioCentralMagazine do you have a wiring diagram for this please? i dont understand the how it is transposing via the keyboard when the KBD CV OUT is disconnected?

the ms20 "remembers" the last played key you triggered. So, if you were to modulate the trigger alone, you would have a rythm with the same note. The thing is that not the cv's are modulated, but only the frequency. The signal is basically being transposed. This is done because the doepfer dark time works in a different cv standard than the ms20. Also, the ESP bay is used as a makeshift way to convert trigger type, because one uses s-trigger and the other v-trigger, can't quite remember which uses which, sorry.

Hi, Great video. I have a dark time and an MS20 original at the moment. can you email me a more in depth explanation on how you set this up. I currently can run one sequence through the ms20 from the dark time but i am very keen to know how you changed the key by pushing the keys on the ms20 while still running the sequence through the dark time. MS-20mini can go at 32'; you cannot use the ESP section for equalizing, because both its LP and HP can only cut signals, not boost ;-)

Cool video! I want to get an analog step sequencer for my MS20 kit. Does the Dark Time interact weird with the MS20 because of the Hz/v setup? It's still confusing me.. I want to be able to have a musical relation between the two and to be able to jam over the top with another synth. Hopefully some one can help

Doepfer Dark Time is definitely not recommended for driving KORG MS-20. This video is for testing a hard way to use both, but you should rely on a real CV to Hz converter for MS-20 ;-)
