I played synths in bands for decades. And music other than techno, drum and bass were the only electronic music I liked. I really don't like Art of Noise or Vangellis (?) . Because it's all synths and the drums are programmed. But the track you played in the beginning is amazing. I think you are what they call a musicians musician. 🥇🏆

But the Oasys is actually built around a x86 pc. It has a 2.8 GHz Pentium IV and runs a custom Linux. So this is pretty much a softsynth with a lot of buttons and controls.

While I love your talent, Ujiie-san, I think that this synth wants to be too much, and I miss the simplicity and austerity of the M1. Yes, it was difficult to sequence precisely (unless you're a perfect player which seems to be your case :D), but the sounds had much more character and spirit than these more recent lambda-synths. The Oasys wants to replace computer-based music rigs (by combining all the synthesis techniques together; analog, FM, wave sequence, PCM, physical simulation, etc.) but it seems meaningless since part of the pleasure in music is to collect or gather all the real gears (I don't think that a musician will buy an Oasys as his first intrument, so I guess it will be one more tool in his sonic armada, along other synths)... ?! Moreover, I feel Korg synths lack a bit of sonic personality ever since the Trinity / Triton era. Or perhaps I'm not the right target audience anymore...?! What you're doing in this video is great, but the sounds are kind of cheap and the Karma arrangements (while I imagine that technically speaking it's awesome) are too cheesy to be used in real production (but as you say wisely, it "inspires"). Well, you're so talented musically speaking that for you this is just a magic toy, or a swiss-army knife, but don't you think it sounds a bit cheap? Yes, you say you're addicted to the pads, but I can't imagine one second that you'll use the Oasys over the Oberheim OB-8 for the pads...? Really? Of course this is a demo, so in production the sounds get EQed and mastered but it all sounds to me like a big expensive toy... :-s

It has it's own character and for my money blows away all the ones you mentioned. It has seven synth engines so you really can only compare it to Kronos. And the Kronos has a plasticky cheaper feel to it. Just my opinion. I love my OASYS.

I'm still waiting for a decent sequencer update for my Kronos. Unfortunately, Korg seems to have cashed in on the early adopters and moved on - giving even the smaller Krome a better sequencer and user interface. I'm really disappointed with their update policy, user interface and hardware build quality. Knowing what I know about the Kronos, I wouldn't recommend the high-end synths and keyboards from Korg to anyone. I'm stuck with a half-broken display (more and more white and yellow vertical lines appearing on the screen) , a noisy fan (which I replaced), a broken SATA cable (which Korg installed in such a way that it had to break off the cable connector or the SSD side of the connector eventually). And guess what? Korg sells no spare parts anymore. No parts, an unusable sequencer (you have to punch in timecodes manually for most operations instead of visual selection, it's a far cry from what the Roland Fantom G offers), and no substantial upgrades on the horizon. No more Korg for me.
@WooShell
@WooShell 10 жыл бұрын
Same for me.. Korg has long moved on from sturdy, professional, high-quality studio and stage equipment to short-lived fancy playthings. Tons of features, but only a fraction of them are actually well executed. "Well meant is the opposite of well done", that goes for technology also. If I'm shopping for new music gear, I'll probably go for Roland or Yamaha instead.. although the former are heading in Korgs direction as well lately...

Yeah, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that Korg used the low-end, already aging Pentium4 to power the Oasys.. then they had the audacity to claim that the production cost was too high to continue. (some people paid around $10,000 for an oasys) Fastfoward and they've got Intel's "Atom" processor running the Kronos.. which essentially means they've not upgraded the overall power of the system at all, since the Oasys. The Atom actually performs worse than the P4 in many areas.. basically the only upside is the heat is way more managable because it uses less electricity. Which is nice, but "big deal" yknow..? Had they decided to make something with modern quality, they could still easily charge several thousand for it, yet have a more capable computer under the hood. All of what bothers me about Korg's "flagship" series is hardware-based, because I will admit, I have never owned any of these and probably never will. Based on reviews and comments, I'd feel more confident in my own ability to build a synthesizer/keyboard-oriented computer case.. I realize there is more going on inside of an Oasys/Kronos than a computer crammed up a keyboard's skirt.. but I still think I can do a "better" job, given the cost and outcome. Bottom line: I don't really see the value in a product like this, when the average person can load virtual instruments on just about any junky old computer, then plug in a keyboard. Korg needs to lower their prices for this junk.. or maybe start manufacturing it where they sell it, instead of outsourcing everything to Chinese slave factories. Your tale of software and screen issues really says a lot to me. Hammers home the idea that while I still think these are very cool, in concept, I wouldn't really want one of these.. rather.. I wouldn't want to pay for one.

Now you tell us... I have the M3-88 & even with all the options I usually just use the Towards the Sun Combi. I recently tested, Reaper & Alchemy Player & was going to run the M3 editor along with the Prophet 08 in Reaper. I think I will hope for a better option than this & some better products from any manufacturer in the future.

***** Well I don't mind the CPU really - most of the heavy lifting is done by a multicore DSP chip anyway. The build quality is a joke though: The DSP board is really just mounted inside and then connected to the PC mainboard with a regular USB cable that isn't even secured down against being pulled out.

Wow! They DID make something as big as the DSS-1 again! ;-) It's also interesting how 'accompaniment' sections of cheapo Casio/Yamaha personal keyboards are now being offered as features of new workstations, albeit a lot more advanced. It still comes across as playing you don't need to think about, though.

Seriously .. All keyboards of the last 3 decades have used outdated tech compared to the Computer tech available on their release date, its not only Korg. I think one should look at what Korg gets out of a crappy Atom dual core cpu, and despite what people say, the Kronos don't have additional DSP. Not sure about the Oasys, but most likely the system is 98% cut/paste from the Oasys to the Kronos code so doubt there's much difference. Everything of the heavy sound and dsp processing in the Kronos is happening in the Atom Pocessor. Try throwing 3-400 notes polyphony at your average i5/16mb ram PC with around 20 softsynths and samplers loaded with maybe 20-40gbyte of samples and 8-10 DSP effects running too, and it will soon start stuttering . Its not many Software samplers that is able to stream large size sample libraries directly from disc. Even industry standard Kontakt sampler have problems with long loading time on really big libraries. Fully agree that the sequencer of the boards could be better... It gets the job done, but it could be streamlined with a better ui. But look at it this way, no other brand has a workstation that even rivals the Kronos in sound capabilities, and most doesn't even rival the 3 engines of the first generation Oasys. Complaining about stock sounds are just lame. They hardly ever show a boards full potentional if used by a person that know his gear and can actually use it. Most of us will only scratch the surface of what the Oasys/Kronos is able of doing. It DOES take a long time learning these boards and thats its biggest downside. It sure have its quirks that could be optimizes quite a bit if Korg would put the time in doing it, but I think the complaints about the hardware quality is is out of whack. Yes there have been some problems with the RH3 keys, but so far I know that was the earlier models. The build quality of the Kronos 2 wich I have is top notch, the keybed and controlls are great, the display could use a more modern replacement that felt more like an iPad but then again .. a glass surface might not be as practical for an instrument like this. Being based on a std PC board it is kinda disapointing that you can't connect a large screen PC monitor and other periferials for use at home/in the studio when programming or recording.

Martin Schneider The basic patches, and there are tons of them on OASYS , are just that - basic. Many of them are perfect to begin with, all can be modulated to extreme. I regularly test other keyboards and workstations and while some can hold some advantages when it comes to ease of operation, they do not offer the variety of modulation possibilities that OASYS does. In addition, just like with any high end stereo, all the components must be top notch. You can't drive 12G set of speakers with a cheap amp. I found this to be applicable to OASYS. You need powerful set of high quality sound monitors to be able to reproduce the sound quality OASYS offers. This guy probably has soft ears and he likes softer sound, nevertheless, OASYS, while it (naturally) cannot cover all the sounds from all great synths from the past, it will give you sounds of much hotter character. Some of the modulations I have done can be outright brutal. None of the competitors comes even close to the quality that this workstations demonstrates. On the other hand, I agree with one of the comments above that is critical of Korg for not offering support anymore for this phenomenal keyboard. OASYS is quite sensitive to elements and it does break down, just like mine did
