Korg ROMplers (particularly the M1, Trinity and Triton) are truly masterpieces. They sound so distinctly of the time period they were made yet somehow sound so timeless and ethereal. Can't say that about a lot of gear from the late 90s/early 2000s. Sad that Korg didn't make a VST version, at least we have the M1 and Triton.

@@ecclesoul same with the Tritons to be fair. An LE61 will set you back £200 yet an Extreme will be £1,500. I only have one sample synth/ROMpler, the Roland XV-5080. It's basically the highest end one in the JV/XV series. Was £540 with some expansion cards included. Sold them off so basically I realistically got it for like £400 or something. The JV-1080 usually goes for like £150 sometimes. The way I see it, £400 is 2 years of Roland Cloud Pro and the only thing on there I wanted was the JV/XP/XV sounds so like, why rent it for 2 years when I can own one forever for the same money? XD Finally having one just sat away from my PC has helped with my songwriting process a lot. I can just play something on it, sing or fiddle with my MS-20. Currently just taking a break from cabling it all across my room into my interface so now I'll be able to just boot Cubase and record what I'm doing. Best part that I'm controlling it with a MIDI controller which also is hooked into my PC so I should be able capture the MIDI input and the 5080's output at the same time so no need to transcribe or anything. But yeah, I have tp say, the Korg sound equally appeals to me. I love the Roland stuff for more sort of orchestral mock up stuff but the Korg sounds are just amazing when it comes to pad patches and I love their choirs. My earliest sort of core memory of music was the old Tomb Raider PS1 era soundtracks, which were all done on the Roland JV-1080 and later 2080. I heard the other day from the composer that he'd used a Trinity at some points too. The other was 808s & Heartbreak. Majority of the pianos, choirs and I think some percussion came from the Triton Extreme. So I can just flick through these synths and find sounds that defined the first 16 years of my life!

@Nismology54 ай бұрын
Yup. Really in a technological respect hardware synths are obsolete. You can do it all and more with plugins, sample libraries and a good controller. I read somewhere recently that the magic of these older workstations comes from the fact the core sample waves were fairly crude, so the designers worked the synthesis engines much harder to make up for that and the results have a sort of lovely synthetic depth and clarity that makes them sound appealing. That's why the JV1080 for instance is still so highly regarded, and why the D-50 still has a cult following.

This was one of the last 'larger than real life' synths. After that synths sounded more realistic and produced, but not more impressive. I had a TR-Rack to replace my trusty 05R/W, but it couldn't do all the sounds the 05R/W could do, even if the 05 was of a less quality. But the Korg sounds are about pads and all warm sounds, so a powerful piano is not needed.

@@Nismology5 I have both and its worth keeping both. The Trinity has an open, airy, warm sound that blends into pretty much anything but doesn't fit everything - acoustic sounds are NOT the Trinity's strong suite and your typical analog sounds aren't what it's best at, but nothing besides the JD-990 matches the Trinity in warm digital synth sounds~ Fantom-X basically does everything and has some great acoustic sounds with the charm of older sampling synths while still sounding modern, is the best way I can put it. And it does those nice analog sounds and everything else Roland is known for, but it doesn't excel at digital pads and hybrid sounds like at 1:40 in this vid. Basically, the Fantom-X is a jack of all trades, master of some, and the Trinity does just a few things but does them so well it's hard to argue there's a better fit anywhere ^^
