Korg X3 - Floppy Drive Solution

Was given away a Korg X3 yesterday which i really like, i always get a "data error' message with disks so i decided to go this way and now i have a nice X3 restored with original patches, it really worths a lot even today, btw the best part of this video is the female voice that seems it was made using older "vocoder" programms in old computers such the infamous Amiga 500

@@rhomis Well to be honest i dont know what they where thinking back then in Korg, they could simply add a factory reset prodedure in the software of the synth with the original banks somewhere in rom. And YES it was an easy fix actually i managed to upload patches from the first time with SENDSX withough being forced to adjust speed of transfer etc like in older synths eg the DX 7, if you dont have the right midi interface/computer card.

Rhomis: U Rule big time! My X3's floppy died years ago and since I had screwed up the programs, II only used it as a MIDI controller for my computer recordings. I couldn't reload my original Programs/Combination disk nor my own material, that I thought lost until I' d pull myself together to buy a new drive. Your instructions work to the letter! Just picked my own MIDI card, set the settings and the files transferred without a glitch. Awsome!

Hello! Its 2023... And I hope you're still active, Rhomis. I just got the X3 and I love it, trying to add new sounds to it. Found some SysEx sounds online (So im skipping the JAR file step), tried the video's method to add them via USB/Midi but no luck. When I do the "Send SysEx" nothing happens on the X3's screen. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks

It has been a while since I used my Korg X3. Make sure you select the correct hardware At 4:11 there are a few selections in the video. USB or some other device may also be selected.

With Sonar and Cakewalk and can do the same process. I have saved many times my data to the sequencer you save the songs. or load from pc to x3 or N364 01 / w. depends on the keyboard connected via midi.

@jaydominic I am glad you find it useful The X series were one of the best keyboards of the time. The floppy drive was a piece of crap, USB was introduces 2 years after the KORG X3. The USB flash drive was for sale in 2005, and very expensive. The only other option would have been a serial port, but not practical for portability. They should have used a standard 1.44 floppy drive, instead of the weird custom 720 KB.

I have an X3, and thought I could never use my songs again, and though it is a rather daunting procedure, am willing to attempt to get my Korg going again, cause it was the best keyboard in the world to me. Sounds, songs, settings, etc... can ALL be saved onto the PC with the method described in the video here. No need for a floppy in this particular case. WATCH the entire video, then you can save your hard work from the X3 onto the computer.

You can save all of the DATA from the Korg X3 with the MIDI cable. I am greatful that a few people from the Yahoo Group guided me onto this method. I hope the video helps. PM me if you have any questions.

@lsupernaw96 I updated the link. Just remember at 4:16 in the video tutorial, MPU-401 may not be listed since you are using a USB device. Try a setting that is different, especially if it indicates a USB device.

If your Triton is like the "KROG X3" or the "KORG M1", which means having the capability to use MIDI Dump and MIDI Load, then it is very likely that you can do it. I Googled up the KORG Triton, and so far I detect that you can do basically what this KZbin tutorial tells you. It may be worth a few dollars to buy a MIDI patch cord and give it a try. If it don't work, at least you can still connect the Triton to your PC and use the basic features of the MIDI interface.

Hello! I recently picked up a Korg X3R with a malfunctioning floppy disk drive (boo!) and stumbled across this tutorial. As an aside, I love the music underscoring the video. :) Though, I am not sure if anyone else has run into this, but at about 3:38 where GLOBAL mode page 3B is shown, in the video is displayed as: LOCAL/NoteR ON ALL Whereas mine simply displays: NoteR ALL I am not sure if I have a different X3R ROM / OS version ? Will still try to follow the video from here and see how far I get!

It's been a long while since I tinkered with my KORG X3. It should still work, keep trying. You can always RESET the keyboard on startup, but you will lose everything. Technology has changed since then, USB now instead of the MIDI game port. I keep an old PC handy (with an old version of Windows installed), just for the purpose of the KORG. I have kept my KORG mainly for the sound it produces. It is also the same keyboard that the band U2 used in the day.

@@dkupka2 - Great. I am glad you got it working. I have tried years ago to get standard floppy drives to work, KORG had custom made floppy drives for that keyboard. I wish there was a USB kit to install in place of it, simulates the floppy drive.

I am not sure what the problem is... Since you have USB, try selecting something other than the MPU-401 option. (4:13 in the video) See if there are any other options in MIDI-OX, that can be changed for you.

@dgarnelo777 Resetting the KORG-X3 will make it sound like a cheap Casio toy. But if you absolutely need to, do this: Hold 'Page Down' and '0' while turning it on.

YES you can! However the "MIDI Output" listing is different than this video tutorial (see 4:17). It will not be "MPU-401", instead, it will probably be a USB listing. Good Luck!

Hi! My x3 has lost the internal battery with all the sounds except GM and I cannot put them back from a PC, (the keyboard does not indicate that it is receiving data). The connection works fine because I send notes from the PC to the keyboard and they sound. Also if I play the keyboard I see the notes on the PC. Sending Sysex from the keyboard to the PC also works. In all cases in the USB cable the LEDs light up so I see that the data is sent from and to the keyboard, however it does not recognize them when sending them from the PC (it does not even show on the screen that sysex data is being received) . I think it is a problem with the configuration of the keyboard or the PC software. I am using Midiox on the PC. As for the keyboard, I have followed the instructions in the manual regarding the configuration of the Global mode (filters, memory protection, etc.) but there is no way. I've tried changing the delay and buffer size and it doesn't work either. Can anyone please help me? Thanks!

At 4:10, make sure you select the correct MIDI input. This video was made before USB and other versions of MIDI devices were available. If you are using a USB midi device, then select that from the list.

@@juanoropeza2913 any midi device attached to your computer should work. I have an old computer with Windows 7 just for that purpose, with older hardware.

The problem with the X3 floppy drive means the owner can no longer load programs that are formatted on floppy. They need to get into the X3 before they can be saved to computer. How do you load floppy discs into the computer to be loaded via system exclusive?

Do some research. You "may" find that a standard PC floppy drive may work (unlike the custom 720KB floppy in the KORG X3), but I am not sure on this. Worth a shot. I have seen replacements for the ASR-10 for about $80.00 OR IF you know JAVA script , it could be possible to write a *.jar patch that resembles this KORG tutorial. Then use the MIDI connection. For about $80.00, it may be worth it, the ASR-10 is a nice system.

I sent you a message. Try playing with the settings in MIDI-OX, mainly the DELAY settings. Also, "USB MIDI" and "Sound-Card MIDI" may or may not work with the X2. But from what I hear, it should work. Let me know what you do, if you get it to work.

+colliecandle No it is not. The floppy drive in the KORG X3 is proprietary to that keyboard only. I have literally tried dozens. No kidding, I have amassed over 30 floppy drives and not a single one will work. For one, the connections are not the same. I have tried modifying ribbon cables and making custom connections. No luck. The MIDI patch is good enough for that old keyboard. I use it as a secondary instrument.

Sorry for the delay. Sounds like you are on the right track. If you are using Serial port MIDI it should work. If you are using USB to MIDI, you may have to tinker with it in the settings..
