Korg needs to update the 3 original Volcas to include "Global System Parameter" #8 which is for the "Sync input/output unit". This would allow the entire collection of Volcas to sync to “Once a step” (or 4 PPQN). The added bonus is that when the Volca Drum, Volca Kick, or Volca Sample is used as the master clock, the swing settings will extend to all Volcas in the chain.

That is an EXCELLENT idea and now that I hear it, I almost feel like they OWE it to us to do it (It would NOT be costly or time/resource consuming, they could probably put it together, ready for download in an hour) If ANYONE out there is down to start a petition I'm IN...Yes, we could spend our time on stuff more helpful to our fellow man, so....If we do it we'll do something philanthropic at the same time....OK, now that we've got that figured out, the ONLY WAY we get Korg to do this is to be a pain in their ass, they will not do it otherwise.

Dear Ian Korg or Gavin Volca or whomever's running the shop in 2019. Please bring out a hardware sequencer for Volca's that allows for Motion sequencing. Yes you can sequence Motion in the one-bar patterns on each Volca itself but the moment you use, say, a Beatstep Pro, you lose Motion and can only control notes. I want a hardware sequencer that is less fiddly than the Volcas themselves and which can sequence many patterns of longer than one bar including Motion.

I'm thinking of adding this to my lighting laptop as a line-in. This way I can hopefully get a clear beat for the Sound Active mode in the software. Software requires enough bass in the signal to recognize a beat; I'm pretty sure (from experience and memory of what I saw in the manual) it doesn't count higher frequencies. I would just use the built-in microphone, but I can't ever seem to get the sensitivity right. If I do, the level changes and the light chases don't work right yet again. When the subs are rumbling, the mic is not picking up the beats it needs. Question: How sensitive is the tempo adjustment? As you turn the knob, is it easy to dial in an exact number or does it skip 2 or more BPM at a time? I've already given up on finding something cheap enough and also that I can "type in" or even tap an exact BPM - everything cheap seems to use a knob for BPM. Also, does the BPM show on the screen? He said he was adjusting tempo at 5:00 but he used the DAW and not the Volca Drum. So I didn't see anything useful there for my purposes.
@mikey386325 жыл бұрын
I play synth too so I might use whichever unit I purchase for practice or tracks, but my main goal is to boost the accuracy in the sound active bits of my lighting rig. If nothing else, so I can take a quick run to the bathroom or catering table at an event.
@JacobPadlock5 жыл бұрын
@@mikey38632 If you have anything else in your live setup that you use as a master MIDI clock you could just send MIDI clock to the volca to keep it in time instead of having to adjust the bpm manually. EDIT: also they take sync pulses in and I think if you just playback an audio recording of the sync out pulses and just like, warp that to tempo in a program like ableton you can sync that way.
@mikey386325 жыл бұрын
@@JacobPadlock it is lighting software that I am trying to sync to the beat. I'm looking at the volca drum to use primarily to generate a kick drum at the desired BPM and feed to the light software (it can listen for a beat for its sound active mode). But I also want it in case I can use it for tracks. I don't really do many tracks, I'm mostly a lighting and sound tech. But I do dabble sometimes.

The sound is really great and it's certainly a fun little machine but - and this is a big BUT: at about 3:57, Luke says you can bring in the Volca into the production environment very easily. I disagree with that comment. I've been trying for days to have my Volca Drum talk to Pro Tools but still fail to get the two to communicate properly with each other. I read the manual, the Midi mapping files and saw ample KZbin videos hoping to find the answer (most videos are about how to use the Volca - not how to bring it into a Midi environment). I can now trigger the 6 step-button sounds manually when pressing keys on my Midi keyboard but any midi sequence programmed in Pro Tools will not trigger the Volca. I wrote to both the US and European KORG support but unfortunately neither has come back to me yet about how to resolve the issue. If anyone has experienced similar connection problems and found out the magic tweaks how to actually leverage the Volca Drum from within Pro Tools, I would really appreciate your comment. Thanks!
@mathieubrummer38384 жыл бұрын
By way of update: I managed to get the Volca drum to work. The reason why it did not work was actually due to my Midi keyboard (M-Audio Code61). After combing through M-Audio's user guide (CodeSeries-UserGuide-v1.3) I found the following key sentence on page 100 in the section on MIDI out: "It will not send out incoming MIDI messages from your DAW or the MIDI In port." This explains why, after enabling my MIDI Out port, I could trigger the Volca but why MIDI sequences from the DAW would not be transferred back to the Volca (irrespective of whether or not the MIDI Out port on the keyboard had been disabled. I hope the above clarification may be helpful to others. As an aside, KORG still hasn't come back to my initial question...

Hang on. My volcas (not this one admittedly) can’t be used with sync to midi clock. The volca seems to take a while to figure out that it should be following the external clock rather than the internal, and by the time it’s done that, it’s out of time with everything else. Or has this been fixed with this volca? Can you release updates to also fix older volcas?

I really liked this machine and was planning on a future purchase.. until I saw the lack of panning for each part. Seriously Korg, what kind of drum machine doesn't allow for panning of the voices? This kind of shit would fly in the early 80s on budget gear of the time like the TR-606, on the higher end models you had separate outs for panning each drum on an external desk. No option of the sort offered here which doesn't exactly fly in 2019, your Volca Sample from 2015 had this feature for crying out loud, speaking of the Sample, was hoping this could fill the void that unit left after selling it..

I love the "slice" feature which is called ROLL in most other drum and sequencer machines of the 1990s. Now why is the beat repeating every 4 counts? That is very limiting so you can not play a full usable beat without it repeating the slice effect every 4th count. I noticed this on most modern drum and sequencer players post 2001! A Yamaha RM1x can record a beat that is 64 counts long like in FL STUDIO! So you can almost basically record an entire song stanza as a pattern in the RM1x. In the Volca units, I can only record 4 counts and then it repeats so when I wanted to record a bass line I was not able to because it would repeat after only 4 counts and over write the bass line before I finished the whole bass line which is 16 counts worth of music. I have since sold my units due to this very limiting fact. Seems ALL drum machines and sequencers only do 4 counts and repeat. So about 16 steps of notes only. Why are the older drum machines of the 1980s and 1990s so much better? I played with a Casio RZ1 and I expected it to be very limited in the beat length but I was able to play a beat that is 16 or even 32 counts long! Now THAT was impressive for such an old drum machine! And memory back then was very expensive so...what gives? I have a Yamaha DX200 and AN200 groove boxes and they too only can play and record 4 count beats and repeat. so 16 steps or 16 notes per rhythm then repeats. Can't play a full bass line or stanza with that. Korg, make a product that can record and play more than 16 steps/notes/4 count beats!

That shit sounds digital as hell....Tube modeling my ass! This is a "Nightmare" version of what I was bugging KORG to do...What I asked for was: VOLCA PERCUSSION. 100% Analog, FOUR OUTPUT (One can be set as headphones, or global out, or all four can be set you output individual voices or any combination) It's just a basic, analog percussion synth, four-voice...Who's "Root" functions would be Snare (Duh) Hat open, hat closed (Those two would be linked) an all-purpose analog drum voice. And Finally, a programmable metronome/Trigger. Like the Volca kick (A CRIMINALLY underrated piece of studio gear, The Volca Kick is a permanent fixture in my studio, whether layering a live kick or getting the precise electronic kick the song needs, that Volca is MONEY) in four different sections (If you count Hat open and closed as one) It would give you the analog pulse and white noise generator you need to design a snare, but it would give you pitch/amp envelope controls and each voice would have the ability to overdrive it into the output amp (Pleasent overdrive...Saturation, shall we say) The High Hats, would give you tuning/envelope/drive and "Stick" I.E a motion sequancable knob that would alter where the "Stick" landed as the hat was struck. The Analog "Drum" would give you, Disco Tom/ Kick Drum/Tom/Space drum-type parameters, very simple, but useful...and lastly, you could program the metronome in any way you please, so it could be sent directly to the drummer, while the other volcas were sent to the front-of-house sound man. With this one feature a Volca set up now becomes a viable option for backing tracks, keep in mind it has it's own output. To me THIS was the Volca we needed (Along with a Volca Mix that isn't supposed to make us laugh, and a "Volca Threw" cable...but you can make one yourself) With this unit, Kor would have two completely different Analog drum machines...The Volca Beats (Which once you fix the snare and install individual outs is GREAT. If you own one and haven't don't those two mods, then you don't REALLY have a Volca Beats, they are ESSENTIAL) And the aggregate Volca Kick/Volca percussion analog drum machine...The latter would come ready with individual outputs and a sub-out metronome that could be programmed for a drummer monitoring it, or it could be programmed to trigger the arp on the Juno 60, the Clock signal on an 808, anything you would need it to do in that respect. What I am describing here is actually a basic analog sound device that would be so easy to make I could probably make something like it myself, for Korg it would be easy and it would be CHEAP....and we COULD REALLY USE IT...But, that's not really how KORG rolls now that Tats is gone, is it? Anyway, I described this unit to several KORG employees over the years...when I saw the VOLCA DRUM, I thought..."Wow! Did they take my idea?" (I wasn't at all mad, I was HOPING they did, something VERY similar happened with me and the Novation "Circuit Mono station"Of course by the time that thing hit the shelves it was apparent that they had completely missed the point) Anyway, I was thinking they did and then I saw.......nope...they didn't....not even a little....not even close...I would have NEVER asked for this thing (Digital percussion? Are you F%$King KIDDING ME?!) Just like I never asked for a Volca modular, that seems to sound like complete shit...or a NEW Volca Bass with one of those Budget "Starved Plate" fake tube gimmicks (anytime you see those, someone is trying to take advantage of the fact that they think you don't know the difference) Never asked for a Volca Mix with no frigging channels, no way to separate the outputs, a master tempo clock, even though that feature in 100% USELLES....No proper EQ...No Panning...a time-based "Low end" compressor that just sounds like you overloaded your Sony Walkman, a stereo spreader that everytime I turn the knob I say....The Fuck did they think I was gonna do this? Is this the "Make shittier"? knob?....KORG! FUCK YOU! You guys were the leaders on the new Analog Golden Age, you were the industry leaders, you MADE HISTORY! Now you act like you're fucking Beringer...Just trying to "Get away with scams" PATHETIC...BEG Tats for his forgiveness...BLOW HIM in round the clock shifts till he agrees to come clean up that toilet....Maybe he'll teach you that a "Flagship Synth" 1. HAS F'ING AFTERTOUCH 2. IS IN F'ING TUNE 3. Shouldn't be sold as "Analog" IF THE MAIN OUTPUTS SEND THE SIGNAL THROUGH A STAGE OF AD/DA CONVERSION! I'm going to get new locks. I feel like any day now, KORG are going to try and break into my house.

Disappointing. Just sounds like a Teenage Engineering PO12 Rhythm with one effect. Where's the Volca FX unit? Where's the Volca Vocoder? Where's the Volca Wavetable synth? Come to mention it, where's the Volca Beats mkII with a decent snare, swing and, vastly expanded pattern storage? Where's the Volca FM mkII with 9 note polyphony? Where's the Volca Bass mkII with texternal access to the three oscillators? Where's the Volca Sample mkII with either USB data transfer or actual sampling capabilities? There's so many things the Volca range needs and this is the best you could offer?

"Where's the Volca Sample mkII with either USB data transfer or actual sampling capabilities?" Both of those are completely unnecessary ... sampling capabilities? 😂 just use your computer cuz that's where all your samples will live eventually. What the Sample needs is *full MIDI support*, but I got around that with the RK-002. But every time I hear someone ask "Does it sample?" I just shake my head and laugh -- you are typing on the best sampler you could ever own. 😂

You don't get it. What do you do with those samples on your PO-33 when it fills up? You archive them on your computer. Who wants to trim, and re-trim samples over and over when you can just transfer them ready to go from your computer. Think smart man. I've been doing this for 30 years now. Your profile is empty, by the way.
