Depends on what you mean by fastest. Players can be fast in acceleration, can be very elusive and be able to step off either foot, can be superfast over 30 metres or fast over 100 metres. The can be very big and heavy and hard to stop. There is no one fit for all sizes and therefore the fastest is in many ways difficult to select.That is what makes rugby fascinating

Big time. Rugby speed is not the same thing as straight-line speed. Players like May, Habana and Wade who combine elite sprint speed with the ability to change direction, take contact and control the ball are pretty rare. A lot of the players on this list are probably not the fastest in rugby, they're just the ones with the right combination of other attributes to make to most of their speed. Carlin Isles couldn't make the transition to 15s because he didn't have the all-round skillset. Pure speed is not enough.

Agreed. It's quite possible to run a faster 100m whilst hitting a lower top end, and vice versa. Fastest should mean higher top end but those unfamiliar with the intricacies of athletics thing a faster 100m time means player A is faster than player B.

Is speed on a rugby pitch three things rather than one - change of direction, acceleration over the first few metres and sheer top speed. I doubt anyone could excel at all three but Perry Baker’s speed is breath-taking.

For my money Patrick Lagisquet, Sebastian Carat, David Trick, Ian Williams, Rory Underwood, Nigel Walker, Andy Harriman, Derek Stark, Iain Balshaw and Paul Sampson should all feature, who were all between 10.4 -10.8 100m runners. But hey Jordan Larmour could be in there 🤣🤣🤣

Good video, not sure these are the fastest 20; Adam Radwan is the quickest around at the moment on GPS data. In the early ‘80s there was David Trick of Bath and England who was 10.4s / 100m as a school boy and some years later still ran 10.4 for Haringey Athletics club, shame his tackling wasn’t up to much, but then again he started as a fly half, in the days they had no defensive duties.

Nice video, but these are definitely not the 20 fastest players of all time. From South Africa alone Rosco Specman, Courtnall Skosan, Lwazi Mvovo, Aphiwe Djantyi and Makazole Mpimpi are all faster than Cheslin Kolbe, who is our best "stepper."
