i love that since she's explained her screaming like that (especially during scary games) is to release the built up tension/anticipation before the scary thing happens, so her screaming when she almost controls mario into a pit is basically her barking to make the pit not kill her

Surprisingly, the game doesn't use your feet to detect if you're stomping on the enemy -- IIRC, if you're moving downwards, you hurt the enemy but otherwise the enemy hurts you. So, if you stand on the ground, you will always get hurt by cheep cheeps, even if they come up directly under your feet.
