And to think, Brian Wilson wrote this album and recorded it with The Beach Boys in 1966, long before auto-tune and digital manipulation ran rampant in the recording studio. The repetitive, pitch-perfect harmonies are so easy on the ear, and the unorthodox instrumentation (for a rock album, anyway; this album and The Beatles' 'Revolver' are the only two I know of that definitely make use of a French horn) make the music all the more interesting. It seems like I hear something new every time I listen to it. This is definitely a masterpiece, and any rock band would have been proud to record this material. Also, he seems to be genuinely enjoying himself in this concert. The man definitely deserves it; he's walked through hell with gasoline boxers on.

@BenCulture10 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Brian doesn't need AutoTune, anyway. His problem is not an inability to sing on pitch; his only problem (understandably enough) is his lung capacity. On the _Smile_ tour, during the album performance, I noticed a second singer was discreetly doubling Brian's parts, in unison. Brian wasn't going flat or sharp, he was just running out of breath, so the second singer was left to hold the note. I didn't feel cheated, whereas AutoTune is cheating -- plus, AT makes everybody sound inhuman and similar. Brian's onstage solution of "doubling" seems more organic and fair. I think he's still essentially a great singer.
@js78516 жыл бұрын
The Beach Boys sang on it, Carl played 12 string, it was the Wrecking Crew that recorded the music with Brian leading them. The idiot Mike Love hated Pet Sounds, it confused all but Carl. A true classic, then and now.

Remember he is close to 70. As a human being, I enjoy the music 1000 times more now that I have watched Love & Mercy so many times. Bought the film, ripped it down to fit on iPad and iPhone as well as having it here full sized. It is a testament to genius, love, and a warning to people such as his father or those heading down the path of his father. Talk about overcoming obstacles! It's great when I put the portable "loudspeakers" in the back yard and the young neighbors want to know who that is and can they borrow my CD's. Says something.

My God, that's a kick-ass version of "Pet Sounds" (the song)! If I had any complaint about the live _Smile_ performances, it was that songs like "Cabinessence" and "Surf's Up" seem to cry out for extended outros, maybe even some guitar solos to end them with, but the performances seemed to be note-by-note recitals of the album. It didn't bother me too much -- after all, both albums are gorgeous works of art, and I got to see both of them live twice! I'm just saying, *Brian's band kicks ass,* and it's GOOD to see them stretch out and show what they can do! This is not easy music to play by any means, so these guys are top-notch professionals, and it's a joy, it's bliss, to listen and watch as they play their hearts out! Thank you for posting this!

Brian's falsetto here is impressive. I think the song : Let's Go Away for Awhile , gee I hope I have the title correct, is an absolute masterpiece here , far better than the LP. Yes, extremely difficult music to play so this band has a lot to be proud of. As for Brian..........the man is amazing , talented and tough enough to beat his emotional problems. There might be scars but this guy is a survivor.
@BenCulture9 жыл бұрын
machia0705 Oh, yeah, "Let's Go Away for Awhile" was the first track that really let me know the album was something special. _Pet Sounds_ did not make sense to me immediately. I wasn't sure I liked it at all. None of the songs really do what one expects. They're all very unique and musically uncompromising. I got the regular mono album in 1992, and it wasn't until the 1996 box set with the stereo remix and the session excerpts that I really came to appreciate every single song. But "LGAFA" was immediately beautiful.
@RkivUnderground6 жыл бұрын
I feel _Pet Sounds_ suffers in that every song has a fade out, prematurely ending Brian's extraordinary arrangements before they could resolve by themselves. Sure some songs benefit from a fade out like Wouldn't it Be Nice and God Only Knows because they end up at a place that could be endless and not benefit from an odd chord or tempo change that would otherwise ultimately spoil the moment, so a fade out wouldn't hurt it. Other songs like I'm Waiting for the Day and Let's Go Away For a While feel betrayed by a fade out as you could go a step further and smoothly slip into a memorable outro. Especially IWftD because the coda introduces new lyrics that add a new dimension to the song.

What is that? It sounds amazing.’ Somebody had to remind him it was a song he actually wrote since he had forgotten about it.” The chance meeting led to the band backing Wilson at a couple radio shows and a few years later they were invited to back Wilson on his tour in support of solo album, Imagination.
