I have to admit that's something I never understood in the series. Rava contained and held the Avatar powers and their essence. While she was "destroyed" her personality was very intact and her powers. When she was returned to Korra why did all the other Avatars become wiped out? Rava should have still held them since destroying her destroyed them, but in the end she could not be destroyed? I don't know. Not a bad plot point, but to me it felt a little weak and pushed just so they could have Korra go on alone. Didn't seem to have enough validity to the story really, or it could have been better explained.

Alissa Williams they are not destroyed, just korra’s connection to them, they still exist in the spirit world. Perhaps the connection could be re-established by her or a future avatar

This could lead to a heart breaking scene where Korra goes to Katara and talks about what happened Korra: "Katara, I've lost connection to my past lives, including Aang." Katara: "Aang, who's Aang?" Korra: ".........."

I think it's because Korra is generally the more relatable character while Aang was always more of a role model. That's how it was for me at least. Aang was incredibly wise for a child, as were Katara and Toph and even Sokka in his own way when you think about it. They weren't flawless, but they certainly weren't as obviously flawed and incomplete as Korra was. Korra's flaws and faults made her trip up and fall flat on her face a good number of times and she had no-one but herself to blame and no-one but herself to look to for a solution. Her struggle was a lot more organic and human. She was similar to Zuko in that regard and I think that's why some people were touched more by Korra's story.
